1. Laugh

A good laugh never hurts anyone. You have heard the saying, “Laughter is the best medicine”, well, there is actually research behind that statement. Laughter triggers healthy emotional and physical changes in the body. Laughing also strengthens your immune system, makes you feel happy, helps diminish the feelings brought on by pain, and relieves stress and anxiety. Nothing works faster than making you feel better than a good laugh. Laughing is contagious, if you laugh, chances are the people around you will laugh too.

Find something to laugh about with your family regularly, laughing supports both physical and emotional health. Best of all, laughing is free, fun, and easy to do!

2. Reduce Stress

Stress can cause various issues and it’s important for you and your family to find ways to relieve stress. Kids experience stress and anxiety just like us parents do. Search online for free videos for families that incorporate yoga or deep breathing exercises. 3. Be Proactive With Healthcare

To get into shape, you have to get moving. And what better way to get moving then to go outside and get moving as a family. Ideally, kids should have some kind of physical activity every day, and us adults should be exercising four days a week. I’m not saying that you have to go out and do a 5-mile run, but how about a nice walk around the subdivision. Play basketball as a family, get out the scooters, go for a family hike, go for a family bike ride, there are lots of options! When you opt to exercise together as a family, you not only get in more exercise time (which is good for everyone’s health) but you are also getting in more family bonding time.

Having a hard time getting everyone outside? Too hot? Too cold? Short on time? Try a friendly competition of jumping-jacks, push-ups, or planks during commercial breaks or between your favorite streamed episodes. Everyone will have a little fun together and it’s great exercise.

5. Set Technology Limits

Yes, parents, that means for you too. That means no phones. You can make this a daily habit by selecting specific times during the day where everyone takes a phone break, maybe at dinner time or for an hour right before bed. When it’s family fitness time, I would also recommend leaving technology behind.

6. Meal Prep As A Family

Have the kids sit down with you while you meal plan the family menu for the week. Ask them what they would like and suggest they try to make it. Yes! Kids love to learn new things and with a little guidance they can probably make their favorite meal. Just think of how proud they will be of themselves! Not only are you teaching your child important life skills (cooking!), but you are also promoting healthy eating habits. Take them to the grocery store and the farmer’s market with you, the more involved they are, the more interested they will be about learning about cooking and making healthy food choices.

Make sure you are offering fruits and vegetables at every meal, don’t force anyone to eat them, but have them available. And remember to eat your fruits and vegetables, be a role model for healthy eating. The kids are watching and learning from you.

7. Have Healthy Snacks Readily Available

Look for ways to make healthy choices easier and within reach. Have fresh vegetables cut up and have them next to the hummus in the refrigerator, have almonds visible before the cookies, and make sure fruit is ready to eat and easy to grab. A nice bowl of fruit in the kitchen is always a good idea.

8. Communicate

Talk, talk, talk. I know life gets busy, I know that when you are done with work for the day, the last thing you want to do it talk more. But talk. Communicate together as a family about your day, dinner, what shows are your favorite on Netflix, anything! A great time to do this is at meal time, when everyone is sitting down together (without their phones). This is not only important communication, but it is also family bonding. Communication affects everyone’s overall well-being.

9. Forgive

This one goes along with communication, we are all bound to make mistakes when parenting. Kids make mistakes too. It’s important to admit those mistakes and ask for forgiveness, this creates an open door for communication. Asking for forgiveness will not only help your well-being, but you are also modeling positive behavior to your kids. Holding grudges and being upset never helps anything.

10. Be Thankful

Communicate with each other why you are thankful. We do this in our family every night before bed. It’s important to show your kids what you are thankful for and teach them to appreciate the things they are thankful for.

11. Wind Down Together

For a good night’s sleep, it’s important to wind down before bed. Take a break from your phone, the TV, and just relax a little. That means us adults too! You can read together or alone, play a board game, or work on a puzzle.

12. Get Quality Sleep

Sleep is an essential for adults and children. Children especially. Quality sleep helps in growth, development and just makes for happier kids! Aim for an early bedtime with that wind down time.

Minnesota’s budding wine industry is unique as the climate of this Upper Great Plains state is not considered the ideal grape-growing climate. But grow they do, and these five wineries have the evidence to prove it. All the wineries on the trail have wine-tasting varying in price from free and up.

Delectable Wines From Cold Hardy Vines

The University of Minnesota horticulturists have developed four winter-hardy wine grape varieties. Frontenac’s deep garnet color complements its distinctive cherry aroma and is used to produce many of the rose, red, and port wines. Frontenac Gris is the white version of Frontenac. Its amber-colored juice presents aromas of peach and apricot and is used in producing several varieties of the table, dessert, and ice wines. LaCresent is a white grape with an intense nose of apricot, peach, and citrus. The grape’s high acidity makes it a good choice for dessert and late harvest style wines. Marquette is another dark grape-producing rudy juice. With pronounced tannins and aromas of cherry, berry, black pepper, and spice, the wine is a complex red. To attest to their hardiness, the Frontenac and LaCresent vines have survived temperatures in excess of -30 degrees Fahrenheit and still borne full crops.

Hello busy days and over-scheduled evenings with kids’ activities! Yes, it’s that time of the year. Back to school time. The last year or so has been…how do we say it…difficult. And while we are trying to ease back into the swing of things, things are in full swing. My kids went back to school last week, Steven made the golf team (WOOHOO) but he practices 4 nights a week and Sadie has karate 4 nights a week. Until track starts, then we will toss that in the mix. Breathe my friends, we got this.

You know that Back-to-school preparations can’t start the night before the first day of school. After the long summer months of playing late and sleeping in, we have to not only get the kids ready for early mornings again…but ourselves!

Bring On The Routines

If the kids woke up whenever they wanted to all summer, start waking them up earlier. You may have to do it in stages. I am still waking both of mine about 10 minutes earlier than they have to get up because they are still moving extra slow. They aren’t used to the early mornings yet. And, let’s be honest, I’m not either!

Prepare The Logistics

Plan out when everyone has to get up. Discuss whether you are packing lunches or if the kids will be eating school lunches. Start meal-planning again. I will admit, over the summer my meal-planning goes out the window. Back to school time and crazy sports schedules calls for easy dinners.

I have a new slow cooker meal for you all today! The last week we have eaten nothing but leftovers and pizza, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but the kids were begging me for a “home-cooked” meal and I was begging for more hours in the day. Enter delicious and easy crockpot meal for the win!

This is a pasta slow cooker meal. Now, you may be skeptical that pasta in the slow cooker is possible, but I am here to tell you…it IS! BUT, yes, there’s a but…I do not recommend cooking this one for 8 hours like most of my other crockpot recipes. The difference in this slow cooker recipe is that it has pasta.

When cooking pasta in the slow cooker, the pasta can go from crunchy to soft very quickly, so if you leave it in the slow cooker for 8 hours it’s possible you will end up with mushy pasta. And no one likes mushy pasta.

Tasty Slow Cooker Creamy Chicken Pasta

This Slow Cooker Creamy Chicken Pasta is ready in about 4 hours and prep time is less than 10 minutes! So, if you work out of the house, head to the kitchen after lunch and prep this easy meal idea. Or, if your kiddos are old enough to help in the kitchen, have everything prepped and have them get dinner started when they get home from school 😉

How to make slow cooker creamy chicken pasta

To make this Slow Cooker Creamy Chicken Pasta you will need just 8 simple ingredients:

  • Chicken
  • Milk
  • Italian or your favorite all-purpose seasoning – I use DUST by VooDoo Chef
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes
  • Onion
  • Marinara Sauce, (jarred or homemade)
  • Chicken broth
  • Penne Pasta

My whole family likes our meals with a bit of heat, so I used the DelGrosso Uncle Fred’s Fireworks Sauce, which is our absolute favorite jarred pasta sauce. If your family doesn’t like “spice” feel free to use your preferred sauce and leave out the red pepper flakes.

Speaking of red pepper flakes, FlatIron makes the best red pepper flakes in the world in my opinion, so if you are looking to upgrade your spice, be sure to check them out.

What makes this easy chicken pasta recipe extra delicious and creamy is the milk, I used 2% milk because that’s what I had in the house. You could probably try 1% if you have that on hand, but it may not be as creamy. And if you want your pasta to be a little extra creamy, use heavy cream.

And don’t forget to serve your creamy chicken pasta with a glass of cold milk…and bread!

My Slow Cooker Creamy Chicken Pasta recipe fed my family of four, plus my parents, plus we had about 1-2 servings leftover. So, depending on the size of your family and how hungry everyone is, you may be able to get 2 meals out of this one. I love leftover night…and my kids don’t mind it if it’s “home-cooked” leftover night 😉

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs boneless skinless chicken breast
  • 16 oz Penne Pasta or your favorite short noodle pasta
  • 1 ½ cups 2% Milk
  • 1 Vidalia onion diced
  • 1 tablespoon DUST by VooDoo Chef or use Italian Seasoning
  • ¼ teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes
  • 26 oz your favorite marinara Sauce jarred or homemade
  • 26 oz low sodium chicken broth
  • fresh parsley and shredded Parmesan for garnish if desired

Instructions

  • Season the chicken breasts with DUST seasoning red pepper flakes.
  • Add diced onion to the bottom of the slow cooker.
  • Place the chicken in an even layer in the bottom of a 6 or 7 quart slow cooker.
  • Add the lid, and cook on high for 3 hours.
  • After 3 hours, remove the chicken and either shred it or cut it into slices or cubes.

  • Return the chicken to the slow cooker.
  • Pour in marinara sauce.
  • Fill the empty marinara sauce jar with chicken broth, close the lid, and give it a shake so that you get all the sauce from the jar, then pour the chicken broth into the slow cooker.

  • Add the pasta and milk.

  • Press the noodles down to make sure they are submerged in the sauce.
  • Put the lid back on, change the temperature to low heat, and cook for an additional 45 minutes. Be sure to stir occasionally to make sure the noodles are evenly cooked.
  • Serve hot with a side salad and bread.
  • Sprinkle with fresh parsley and shredded Parmesan cheese if desired.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

The noodles can go from cooked to overcooked very quickly, so check them often.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are some of the most highly-sought and famous grape varieties. Winemakers use the old traditional method of winemaking. Therefore, they make the wine in smaller quantities making it rare and valuable all over the world.

When you visit Burgundy, you can taste wines in Beaune. Beaune is the wine capital in Burgundy, and it offers you the best wine to taste.

You can visit the north for the grand cru vineyards along the Côte d’Or. You’ll find that the best Pinot Noir is planted there. It gives Burgundy’s wine an earthy and fruity flavor.

Some other places, such as Cote de Beaune, are known for chardonnay sites. This is because it produces full-bodied, rich wine. Besides this, Cote Chalonnaise produces more valuable wines while Chablis makes high-acid wines.

Beaujolais, another region near Burgundy, grows Gamay grapes and produces juicier wines with cinnamon from carbonic maceration. The Burgundy region features a number of beautiful small towns that feature picturesque French landscapes.

3. The Loire Valley

The best wine regions in France include the Loire Valley. This region produces the most famous white French wine. In addition, the Loire Valley is one of France’s picturesque regions; therefore, you must visit it!

With beautiful castles, fruit orchards, abundant vineyards, lush green fields, and rivers, this valley is referred to as the Garden of France. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The winemakers produce the wine along the river. If you visit this valley, take a tour of the castle and taste the wine made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

Loire Valley’s historical towns and architecture capture the attention of the tourists. Moreover, the climate is moderate due to a river that flows to the Atlantic Ocean.

Loire Valley is a vast wine-producing region that grows many grape varieties. It has four sub-regions along the river.

The Central vineyard sub-region produces wine from grassy Sauvignon Blanc, while Touraine has red grapes, including Gamay, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec.

The Pays Nantes is a region closer to the ocean; hence the wine made here has a saline minerality.

Some of these wine regions produce the most delicious white wines in the world. The good news is that you can go for wine tasting in the troglodyte cave wine cellars during the trip to Touraine.

4. Champagne

Sparkling white French wine is famous all over the world due to the prestigious Champagne. The Champagne wine region is present in the province of Champagne, and the wine bears the region’s name.

Champagne makes special occasion wines that we drink to celebrate life occasions or to honor milestones. These wines are pricey due to the amount of labor used for their production.

Methode champenoise is the technique used by the winery to make Champagne. Due to this technique, the wine undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle. As a result of second fermentation, carbon dioxide gets trapped in the wine, creating fine bubbles.

Winemakers use Pinot Noir, Chardonnay grapes, and Pinot Meunier to make Champagne. Five regions grow and harvest these grapes, and Champagne can be made by using one of the grapes or a blend of two or more varieties.

As this province lies at the northern latitude, grapes do not get well ripened. Due to this, the wine is slightly acidic. When you visit this wine region, you can go to the Benedictine monk’s tomb, the person who invented Champagne.

5. Alsace

The best wine regions in France include Alsace that produces the world’s most famous fruity white wines. Alsace is situated between the Vosges Mountains and the Rhine River.

It is a region with a magnificent landscape with various mountains and lush hills. Alsace produces about ten percent of red wine from Pinot Noir in a rosé style. In comparison, it makes ninety percent of white wine by Riesling, Sylcaner, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Muscat grapes.

Alsace gets plenty of sunlight, so the wine tends to be rich. On the other hand, Riesling is dry, with a higher alcohol level, while Alsace Pinot Gris has a little residual sugar.

Pinot Gris is also spicy, while Gewurztraminer is aromatic with floral notes. A visit to the Alsace region is a must if you’re a wine lover. You can visit the foot of Vosges to have a panoramic view of the medieval castles, timber houses, and Alsatian villages.

6. The Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley (Cotes du Rhone) stretches from Lyon to the north of Orange, running along the Rhone River in France. It covers two regions with different climates that help to cultivate different varieties of grapes.

The Rhone Valley is famous for red wines. Northern Rhone valley has a cooler climate and granite soils that help to grow Syrah grapes. Some famous appellations such as Côte-Rôtie, St. Joseph, and Cornas produce the boldest wines using Syrah-based reds.

These wines have olive notes. They are smokey and meaty. In the Northern Rhone, winemakers make white wine from viognier which is tropical and fruity.

Then, they blend Marsanne and Roussanne with viognier to create low acid wines with fruity aromas. As a result, the Northern Rhone produces high-quality wine.

But, on the other hand, the Southern Rhone is vast and has a warmer climate with varied terrain. One famous appellation from Southern Rhone is Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for its high alcohol with a bold blend of thirteen varieties of grapes.

However, more than half of Rhone wine production is Côtes du Rhône wine. It is based on Syrah and Mourvèdre. This wine has herbal notes. In contrast, the southern rhone is famous for rose wines.

I don’t know about your kids, but mine can be the biggest food critics, especially when they were little. Their undeveloped taste palate mixed with their ever-changing food aversions made getting them to eat a healthy diet very…complicated…at times. But, when I had them help me make dinner, they were actually more likely to eat dinner. Letting your children see exactly what goes into the food that they eat, makes a huge difference in how they feel about that meal.

After all, when they have worked hard on something rather than just having it put on their plate, they are much more likely to appreciate it. Even if your child does nothing more than taste the food they have helped prepare before moving on to a peanut butter sandwich, they have taken a step towards adding new food to their diet.

Not only am I incredibly proud of myself for taking on this challenge to better myself, but I did it for my family. Very young children want to be part of everything going on. Cooking is a daily routine that shouldn’t exclude kids and can teach them valuable lessons. Remember when they would want to stand at the counter on a stool?? Encourage their help by allowing them to do simple tasks they enjoy while keeping them safe. Between meals, let them play with real dough to make cookies or help decorate cupcakes. Follow these tips for a safe, happy, and creative experience cooking with kids.

Safety Tips for Kids in the Kitchen

Keeping kids safe in the kitchen doesn’t mean shooing them away, it means teaching what is off-limits and requires keeping constant supervision over them. Sharp knives must be kept out of reach until they have learned the danger of being cut and the rules for using knives. Teaching kids the proper use of knives as they mature is the best way to keep them safe from being cut.

While cooking with younger kids, keep them at arm’s length from the stove by inserting yourself between the stove and the child to block any sudden moves toward a hot stove. Even very young children learn very early to avoid the heat of the stove but need a constant reminder and supervision.

Food safety is also important. Teach kids not to handle raw meat or eggs without washing their hands thoroughly. Kids love to help scramble eggs. Minimize spilling by putting the eggs into a larger bowl than normal and let them go with a fork or whisk. They’ll probably drop the utensil into the egg and pull it out a few times, just make sure they wash their hands immediately.

With kitchen safety guidelines well established, kids love to be part of the cooking process. Some of the ways kids can get involved in the kitchen are:

  • Adding ingredients – they love dropping things into a bowl or shaking salt and pepper.
  • Turning a stand mixer on and off (with supervision if needed), keeping hands away from the beater.
  • Stirring – can get a little messy until they learn to control, but that’s okay. Repeat after me…It’s okay.
  • Dropping cookie dough onto a baking sheet.
  • Rolling and cutting cookies.
  • Washing produce.
  • Decorating cakes – when making a cake, use a little batter to make their own cupcake to decorate.
  • Decorating cookies – edible pens for drawing on cookies are fun and creative.
  • You can also host your own Family Cooking Competition, this is a fun way to get everyone cooking and have a lot of fun.

How To Empower Kids In The Kitchen

I know that sometimes it’s faster (and maybe easier) to mix those ingredients yourself, but in the long run it’s not! Think of the days where they will make that after-school snacks themselves, or when you can ask your daughter to mash the potatoes, or when your son makes those ramen noodles himself. Life skills my friends…life skills 😉

How to Pickle Sweet Onions

Quick pickled onions are easy to make and delicious on just about every dish. It’s not complicated to make your own pickled onions, and I have a simple (and delicious!) recipe that can be used and customized to your taste. Plus, you probably already have most of these ingredients in your kitchen and pantry already.

Pickling Onions

While making pickled sweet onions is very easy, there are a few things to note before getting started:

  • Make sure that the jars you’re going to use for the pickled onions have been sterilized properly.
  • Make sure that the jars you are using aren’t chipped or cracked, and the lid should fit airtight.

You can sterilize your jars in one of the following ways:

  1. Oven – Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F and place the empty jars upright on your oven’s tray and heat them for about 20 minutes.
  2. Dishwasher – Place the empty jars, rubber seals, and lids in the dishwasher and wash them.
  3. Stovetop – Place the empty jars in cold water inside a deep saucepan. Bring the saucepan to a boil, starting off on high heat and then reducing the heat to medium for about 10 minutes. Using tongs, remove the jars and dry them using a paper towel, or leave them to air dry on a lined baking tray.
Pickled Sweet Onions

I had the 8oz quilted mason jars at home, so that’s what I used to make my pickled sweet onions. I kept 3 jars for me and shared 2 with friends 🙂 Feel free to use whatever size jars you have on hand, just remember that if your jars are bigger, you may want to increase the seasonings to accommodate that.

Pickled Vidalia Onions

To make pickled sweet onions at home you will need these ingredients:

RealSweet Vidalia onions (or any onion you prefer)
Salt
Apple cider vinegar
Sugar
Warm water
Mustard seeds
Peppercorns
Bay leaves
Red pepper flakes

Tasty Quick Pickled Onions

Now, you don’t have to use the seasonings (mustard seeds, peppercorns, bay leaves or red pepper flakes), but I liked the flavor they gave the pickled onions. If you don’t have one or two of them on hand, feel free to experiment and let me know what you tried and how you liked it!

Easy Quick Pickled Onions

Can you add other seasonings when pickling onions?

Yes! I used what I had on hand, but other common pickling seasonings are: coriander seeds and celery seeds. You can also use herbs like dill.

Can you use different vinegars?

Feel free to experiment with different vinegars, such as red wine vinegar or rice vinegar, to create unique flavors.

Can you add any other vegetables in with the onions?

Absolutely! Adding smashed garlic or sliced jalapenos would not only be delicious but add great flavor to the onions.

How long are pickled onions good in refrigerator?

Quick-pickled onions can keep in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 weeks.

What can you serve pickled sweet onions on?

Everything! Honestly, I ate them right out of the jar with a fork. I’m not kidding. They are amazing on salads, burgers, tacos, sandwiches, nachos, I used them in my BBQ Cheeseburger Quesadillas and on my wrap stuffed with lettuce and WW Buffalo Chicken Dip. They would also be an excellent addition to charcuterie boards!

Can you can pickled onions?

If you would like your pickled onions to last even longer, you can do a water bath and seal them.

Now, here is how to make quick pickled onions at home. Be sure to print it and pin it so that you can make them again and again. I mean, they are really easy to make and they are good on just about everything, so you will probably be making them frequently!

Quick Pickled Sweet Onions

Equipment

  • 5 8oz mason jars

Ingredients

  • 2-3 thinly sliced sweet onions or any onion you prefer
  • 3 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 5 teaspoons mustard seeds
  • 25 peppercorns
  • Bay leaves – if desired
  • Red pepper flakes – if desired I use Flatiron Pepper Co 4 Pepper Blend

Instructions

  • Take the salt, apple cider vinegar, sugar, and warm water and combine them in a medium bowl.
  • Whisk the ingredients together until the salt and sugar have dissolved fully.
  • Place the sliced onions in each jar. I had 8 oz mason jars on hand, so that is what I used. I was able to fill 5 mason jars.

  • After placing the sliced onions in a jar, add the mustard seeds, peppercorns, and bay leaves and pepper flakes (if using) so that the spicing ingredients. *EACH jar got 1 tsp of mustard seeds + 5 peppercorns – dash of red pepper flakes – I gave 3 jars bay leaves

  • Pour the above mixture over the sliced onion. Let the jar sit for 1 hour at room temperature for a quick pickle. If place the jar in the fridge overnight, they will have more flavor.

  • Enjoy on salads, sandwiches, burgers, tacos and just about everything else you can think of!

Notes

Keep the pickled onions refrigerated so that you can enjoy them for up to three weeks. If they last that long! Mine were gone in days!

Stress… that ugly 6 letter word that creeps up on too many of us so quickly. Who hasn’t had stress at some point during their day or week? We too often get caught up in the hustle and bustle of trying to make a living, pay the bills, chauffeur the kids, get that project done … that we too often forget to give ourselves the attention that we need. That is when we find ourselves exhausted, irritable, and even sick.  I wanted to discuss stress more in-depth and share some ways to relieve stress. No one really enjoys being stressed, so let’s learn about stress, why it we get stressed, and discover some stress relievers.

What causes stress?

Maybe it’s not having enough money to pay your bills or you just don’t have enough time in the day to get everything done. Maybe your schedule is way overloaded, and you feel like you can’t deal with it.

In many situations, we bring the stress on ourselves without even knowing it. Stress can be created just because of our own perceptions. Did you ever get up one day and have a certain issue on something that you have been dealing with, and then the next day after a good night’s sleep, you suddenly resolve your problem or no longer even view it as a problem?

Attitude can play an extremely important role in anything that you are trying to tackle. You will always feel better and make more progress with what you’re working on with a positive attitude than a negative one. Having a negative attitude can actually cause you stress.

Everybody will have some form of stress in their lives at one time or another. You ought to know yourself pretty well by now, and when you think about it, you even know what sets off your stress level to a new high. Learn from it and deal with it directly. Don’t just ignore it and hope it will go away because it usually doesn’t. If something is bothering you, your mind will still keep stewing on it, and that’s not good for you mentally or physically.

So what exactly is stress?

Stress is defined as any physical, chemical, or emotional trigger that causes a bodily or mental response that can cause disease. The “fight or flight” response associated with stress occurs because of the sudden increase in adrenaline and cortisol in the bloodstream.

The “fight or flight” stress response is the body’s way of giving a warning that something (possibly dangerous) is going to happen.

Stress’ immediate response is to our body is:

  • An increase in heart rate
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Release of fat into the bloodstream
  • Redirection of blood flow to the muscles
  • Muscle tension
  • An increase in the clotting ability of blood

Stress isn’t completely harmful, but it can be if it’s chronic. Chronic stress can cause illness and diseases such as:

Heart disease

Stress causes a risk of increased plaque buildup in the arteries. This buildup of plaque can lead to coronary artery disease. The increase in heart rate caused by the ” fight or flight” response can cause irregular heart rate. The increased fat in the bloodstream can build up in the abdomen and cause an increased risk of heart disease.

Depression

Some researchers believe in a theory called “learned helplessness.” This theory relates to repeated stress-causing helplessness. Repeated helplessness causes depression. Each episode of helplessness causes the stressed person to become even more helpless. Eventually, they only “know” how to be helpless,(re: “learned helplessness”).

Immune system

Studies have shown that repeated stress can have a negative effect on the immune system, decreasing the immune system’s ability to fight illness and disease. Colds, infections, and viruses can be caused by repeated stress on the mind and body.

Obesity

Repeated stress generally causes overeating. This kind of eating is caused by “stress eating.” Stress eating occurs when trying to “feed” emotional overload with food. Comfort food is usually food with fat and sugar — the kinds of foods that cause obesity. I know I am definitely guilty of stress eating.

Stress can have many negative effects on the body. Besides the above disorders, stress can also cause:

  • Insomnia
  • Increased risk of heart attack
  • Menstrual problems
  • Acne
  • Chest pain
  • Skin conditions such as, eczema
  • Pain, or an increase in pain

The effects that stress can have on health are many. Too much stress can cause an array of illnesses and diseases. If you are experiencing any of these illnesses or diseases it’s important to see a healthcare professional.

What can you do about stress?

First off, figure out what’s causing the stress. Is your day packed with too many things to do? Make a list of all that you feel needs to be done for that day. Now the key is to go back over the list and see what can be moved to the next day and what can really be scratched off the list entirely. Now that you have eliminated items from your to-do list, you can easily go about completing the remaining items quickly and efficiently. I think that stress can build up quicker than we realize. Everybody is so busy, and people, in general, are just not taking the time or making the time to do something they really enjoy on a daily basis. You set your schedule; it’s up to you to allow yourself some relaxing moments every single day.

So, what’s a good stress reliever? From personal experience, I have compiled my own list of 10 wonderful ways to relieve stress that work for me in my time of need! Of course, the list will be altered according to your individual likes and needs, but the idea is you will be taking care of yourself.

Laugh

I chose to put this one first because I feel it could be the most important. Laughter can do so many things for you and your body…and it just feels good! Laughing actually slows down your stress response and increases your heart rate. They don’t say “Laughter is the best medicine” for nothing!

Activity

Whether it’s walking, reading, cooking….whatever the activity that you choose, “doing something” is always better than doing nothing. Keeping your mind and your body busy is important.

Be Social

I know when we are stressed, sometimes the last thing we want to do is be around people, but actually, being around people is better for us. When socializing, a conversation is started, and it allows us to change our mental state of mind, focusing more on the present conversation than our issues. Call a friend and schedule a time to enjoy a cup of coffee together. Sometimes it’s hard to do, but even a walk through a grocery store can work. The point is, get yourself out and interact.

Get Some Sleep

Our need for sleep differs from one person to the next. Some people need to sleep 8-10 hours. Others can function for 5-6 hours. I even enjoy a power naps every now and then. Keep in mind that there are different levels of sleep. As long as the sleep that you are having is a good quality sleep, that’s the important part. But, when you wake, be sure to get up! Too much sleep can make you feel even more tired and irritable.

Listen to Music

This is one of my favorites! Let’s be honest. How many of us have turned the stereo up in the car when our favorite song comes on; or blasted the music at home when we are cooking or cleaning the house. Music is a great trigger! It seems that there are always lyrics that match what we are going through at that specific moment. Music allows us to say what we can’t. Music is a healer. So next time everyone is out of the house (or not), blast that stereo; it’s okay!

I obviously write, a lot, here on the blog. And you could too! Start an online journal, a paper journal, whatever you think would help. Writing is a good way to express what is bothering you or causing you stress. Don’t worry about the punctuation or spelling or even grammar; just write until you feel you have gotten it all out of your system. Then you can go back and revise…if you want. When we think “too” much, it is when the words that we want to get out get stuck inside.

Have Limits

Sometimes we have people who expect us to do this or that, make appointments, get together for lunch or drinks, and sometimes we can find ourselves taking on too much. Saying YES too often. Don’t overload yourself! You want to keep yourself busy, yes, but to the point that it’s causing stress. So, know your limits and be willing to say no or take a rain check for next time. They will understand. We’ve all been there.

Communicate

This is a tough one sometimes. I know for me it was, but I’m getting much better at it. If you are in a relationship, communicating is very important. We all want that “perfect” relationship, but in understanding that, you have to know that no one is perfect, and you have to voice your concerns, frustrations, wants, and needs. Assuming that anyone knows how you feel or what you want or don’t want is merely impossible. Being direct about your feelings helps you to release that stress and at the same time helps others to understand. So, don’t be afraid to talk it out. And this doesn’t just pertain to communicating with your significant other, communication is important amongst friends, at work, with family, the list goes on and on.

Exercise

Kick in those amazing endorphins! You all know that I love to exercise. Walking, running, going to the gym and I also love Jazzercise! It’s a fun way to exercise without seeming like it’s exercise. There are all kinds different types of exercise out there for beginners, so just find the one you enjoy and do it. Yoga and Tai Chi are good for meditation and a slow-paced exercise. Jazzercise is more physical, fast-paced, dance-like. Whatever your choice, make sure you are doing something that can get the blood flowing and keep the heart rate good. Take care of that body!

Relax

Last but certainly not least: Relax! Take a hot bubble bath, pop a movie in, snuggle, or grab your favorite book and sit back in that lazy boy. You can even turn off the phone. You want your relaxation time to be just that…nothing more.

What this article is really about is you managing your own stress. Nobody else can really do it for you. It’s up to you to deal with all life’s little curve balls that will come your way, and they will. Be prepared for it all by eating healthy, sleeping well, getting enough exercise, and taking care of YOU.

If you follow Weight Watchers like me, you will be happy to know that this healthy dinner recipe is only 2 WW points per serving on the WW Blue Plan. If you don’t follow Weight Watchers, just feel good knowing that you are making a well-balanced healthy meal for you and your family. I have made this recipe multiple times for my family and everyone enjoys it…even the kids 🙂

WW Egg Roll In A Bowl

There is a similar Egg Roll In A Bowl recipe in the WW app, but I spiced it up a little and added in some extra vegetables. I have found that when cooking with extra lean meats, like 99% Fat Free ground turkey, I need to add in extra flavor. I add RealSweet Vidalia onions and jalapeno to just about everything.

99% FF Ground Turkey – Zero Points

Minced garlic – Zero Points

Mini bell peppers, sliced (can substitute bell pepper) – Zero Points
Coleslaw mix or 10 oz shredded cabbage – Zero points
Shredded carrots – Zero points
Tamari or low sodium soy sauce – 1 Point
Sesame oil – 4 points
Egg – Zero Points
Wonton Wrappers – 4 Points *these will cook fast, so watch them! They will go from not-done to done quick!
Sriracha for serving – 1 Point for 1 tablespoon

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Stove
  • Wok or Large Pan

Ingredients

  • 1 lb 99% FF Ground Turkey
  • 1/2 sweet onion diced
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp minced ginger or 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes omit or reduce if you don't like a little heat
  • 4 mini bell peppers sliced (can sub 1 bell pepper)
  • 10 oz bag of coleslaw mix or 10 oz shredded cabbage
  • 5 oz shredded carrots
  • 1/4 cup tamari or low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 egg
  • 6 wonton wrappers
  • Sriracha for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  • Wash and cut all produce
  • Cut the wonton wrappers into thin strips
  • Place a single layer of wonton wrappers on a baking sheet and spray lightly with olive oil spray
  • Bake wonton strips for 5-6 minutes, watch them that last minute, they will brown up quick!
  • Spray a large pan or wok with olive oil and warm over medium heat
  • Add onion and cook until translucent
  • Add the garlic and ginger, stir a few times
  • Add the ground turkey and cook thoroughly, all pink will be gone.
  • Add in the red pepper flakes
  • Push the ground turkey to one side of the pan and add in the cabbage, carrots, peppers, tamari sauce and sesame oil
  • Mix thoroughly
  • Make a "hole" in the center of the pan by pushing the mixture to the sides
  • Add the egg to the "hole" and scramble
  • Once the egg is cooked, mix it throughout the entire dish
  • Garnish with sriracha and the baked wonton strips
  • Enjoy!

Notes

Be sure to get 99% Fat Free Ground Turkey if you are counting WW points, this is the only variety that is ZERO Points on the Blue Plan.
