How To Pair Wine With Pizza

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

Pizza is a favorite meal to many. With all the different toppings and sauces available for pizza, you may wonder how to pair wine with pizza. I have the answers!
What wines pair with pizza

How To Pair Wine With Pizza

Pizza is a traditional meal for millions of people, and the sky is the limit when it comes to choosing toppings, crust and sauces— in fact, Americans eat up to 100 acres of pizza per day. But just because the meal isn’t fancy doesn’t mean that delicious glass of wine can’t be included. Pizza and wine complement each other well; the key is to choose a red or white wine based on the toppings and sauce used.

Actually, it’s pizza night in our house tonight.  We have pizza once a week or once every other week, and the style and toppings are always changing.  A favorite is BBQ chicken with pineapple pizza, or we go with something simple like a Margherita pizza.  The kids almost always want just pepperoni, but there is something to be said for simply delicious pepperoni pizza. We almost always prefer a nice thin wood-fired pizza, but once in a blue moon I crave a nice deep dish pizza…and I’ll eat all the corners please.

Pairing Wine With Tomato-Based Pizza

Pizza that is loaded with a rich tomato-based sauce, thick juicy slices of tomato (such as Margherita pizza), or such fresh herbs as basil, oregano, parsley, and cilantro pair fantastic with bold, fruity, rich wines with mild tannins. This is because the acidity in the tomatoes works well with the wine’s fruit notes and balances out the tannins. Try Barbera, a medium-bodied red from Italy’s Piedmont region. You can also try a lighter white wine, like a Pinot Grigio since it’s crisp and will not overpower the flavor of the pizza.

Wine For Pizza With White or Pesto Sauce

Nowadays, experimental sauces for pizza are very popular. Alfredo sauce, pesto sauce, tzatziki sauce, Chinese peanut sauce…..all of it tastes delicious on pizza. White wines work well with this type of pizza. For the pesto, choose whites with floral and earthy notes, such as a Chardonnay or Riesling, while alfredo sauce needs a white with a little spice, such as a Sauvignon Blanc with peppery notes. Don’t forget to chill your wine slightly before serving.

Pairing Wine and Pizza

Pairing Wine With Pepperoni Pizza

For pizzas piled high with tangier, spicy meats like pepperoni, sausage (particularly Italian proteins) and salami, try red wines that are full-bodied and earthy. Wines from southern Italy, such as a Primitivo, usually pair well with this favored pizza, because of the less spicy notes and velvety texture. You can also try a nice Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Best Wine For a Vegetable Lover

Since pizzas layered with vegetables make for a fairly light slice, it is smart to aim for a lighter variety of wine. Olives, onions, peppers, lettuce, broccoli, zucchini, artichoke, garlic, and so forth are common vegetable options for pizza. Try a Rosati, an Italian term for a dry rose, to compliment the lighter variety of pizza.

Pairing Wine With Cured Meats and Peppery Greens

Many pizzas, particularly in European regions, pile on the prosciutto, dried red pepper, and peppery greens like arugula. It can be difficult to find a wine to pair with this type of pizza because red is the best option—however, many reds can border on being too bold, and this will overwhelm your taste buds. A rich, savory Chianti is the way to go here, as the slight spice notes in the wine will pair well with the toppings.

Pairing Wine with Pizza

The Best Wine for Earthy Pizza Toppings

Mushrooms are a favorite of many pizza lovers, with a wide variety of earthy components available for the taking. There’s no better pairing than a Pinot Noir with mushrooms (with a little shake of oregano)— it’s a match of earthiness and spice made in pizza heaven. Look for a bold Pinot that has notes of chocolate, spice or pepper, or oak.

Keeping the idea in mind that one must balance the flavors of food and wine is an easy method of pairing the two. So forget the glass of soda or cold beer, and try your hand at matching up wine with you pizza for a match made in heaven.

A Day In The Life Of A Dairy Farmer

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

Being a Dairy Farmer is a non-stop job, 365/24/7. However, it is also a way of life that families, like the Lussier family, are very passionate about. Discover what a day in the life of a dairy farmer is like. While this post is sponsored by Florida Dairy Farmers, all opinions and my love of dairy and farming are my own.

A Day In The Life Of A Dairy Farmer

A Day In The Life Of A Dairy Farmer

Have you ever been in the grocery store and, before you grabbed a gallon of milk, a block of your favorite cheese or a container of your favorite ice cream, stopped to wonder where exactly those products came from? Probably not. And you’re not alone. We go to the store to get the things we need, and the things our families need, but we don’t always think about where those things come from.

When you know where your food comes from, you can make more informed decisions to maximize the freshness and nutritional value. When you buy local, you are also supporting local businesses and your local economy.

Today I am going to share with you where some of that milk comes from that you grab off the shelf at your local Publix here in Florida. Hopefully this will help you have a better understanding where your food comes from and how you are supporting local, family farmers.

Lussier Dairy, located in Hawthorne, Florida, is owned and operated by the Lussier family. I had the incredible opportunity to interview Kevin Lussier about what it is like to be a dairy farmer, and it was evident in the first few minutes of the interview that Kevin is very passionate about being a dairy farmer. In fact, so much so that was one of my first questions.

When I asked Kevin Lussier why he liked being a Dairy Farmer he said: I just love the way of life, I know that every day I am giving back to the community which helps the nation as a whole. Being a dairy farmer is not just a job, it is a way of life, a livelihood that I am proud to be a part of.

Every single day Kevin, his family, and their 10 full-time employees work hard to ensure that the cows are happy.

Yes, EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Dairy farming isn’t a job that is Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, it is 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But Kevin is okay with that, in fact, he loves it. He grew up on a farm and he is looking forward to raising his kids on the farm with his wife, Shelby.

On the Lussier Dairy Farm, the first milking shift starts at 3:30 AM. Kevin arrives at the farm around 6:00 AM to check on the cows to make sure that they are happy, healthy and that everyone is eating well. Calves and mommas are checked on a bit more frequently throughout that day, because all mommas and babies need a little extra love 🙂

By 7:00 AM Kevin is doing some of his daily chores, whether that be bailing hay or cleaning the barns. By noon, it’s time for lunch, but the cows come first. Cows are fed 2 – 3 times a day, and since they like structure and routine, those times are the same every day. Again, it’s most important to Kevin (and all Florida Dairy Farmers) that their cows are happy and well cared for.

Cows are milked again in the late afternoon, approximately 12 hours from the first milking. Trucks come every day about 10 months out of the year to deliver the 35,000-38,000 lbs of fresh milk to places such as Publix, Dean Foods and Borden. In the summer, the amount of milk production slows a little due to the heat so trucks come every 36 – 48 hours. Let’s be honest, no one (even cows) likes to work too much when it’s hot outside. Again, the most important thing to Kevin and his family is the happiness and well-being of their 600+ cows.

Hawthorne Creek Creamery

In his spare time, Kevin can be found at his new love, a local creamery. Actually, Kevin doesn’t have any spare time, he just figured out how to get more hours in a day 😉 Kevin and his wife came across the incredible opportunity to diversify their love of dairy by purchasing a creamery from a local couple that were looking to retire. Here, one of the past owners now helps with the cheese making process where they create 4 incredible types of cheese: Gouda, Havarti, Swiss and Tomme. I asked Kevin which was his favorite and he said if he had to choose, it would be the Gouda, he describes it as extra creamy and buttery. Can I have some please?!  I also had to ask what Tomme was. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to cheese (because I could basically live off of cheese, bread, chocolate and wine 😉 ) but I hadn’t heard of Tomme. Kevin said that it is similar to brie as it melts beautifully and has a rich earthy taste. Can someone pass me some crackers please? Yum! There are also cows located at the creamery, these are the cows where the milk comes from to make the cheese.

Life of a dairy farmer

Kevin, along with his Dad, tend to the cows at both locations 100% of their time. Not because it’s a job, but because it’s a way of life that they love. They love the cows, they love their farm, they love how they help us get nutritious, fresh milk every single day.

Learn more about the Lussier Family and Lussier Dairy. I also strongly encourage you to learn more about Florida dairy farms and their farm practices.  I have a huge appreciation for what dairy farmers, like Kevin Lussier, do for us and our families. It is not an easy job, but you can tell that they wouldn’t have it any other way.  It’s their life.  It’s their passion.  And for that, I couldn’t be more thankful.

Easy Banana and Orange Bundt Cake

Can you make this Banana Orange Bundt Cake without a bundt cake pan?

Yes!  If you don’t have a bundt cake pan, you can still make this banana and orange cake.  You can use loaf pans or even regular cake pans, but you will have to adjust your baking time.  Cake pans are thinner than a bundt pan, so your cake will cook in less time.  Loaf pans are smaller than a bundt pan, so if you would a loaf pan, you cake will cook in less time.  So, just keep an eye on your cake to make sure it reaches proper doneness.  Hmmmm….I don’t think “doneness” is a real word, but you catch my drift 🙂

Made with fresh pesto, fresh tomatoes and fresh bread you cannot go wrong with this Easy Pesto Bruschetta appetizer.  Ready in under 10 minutes this is a perfect appetizer for any night.

Tasty Pesto Bruschetta with tomatoes

Easy Pesto Bruschetta

Bruschetta is one of our favorite appetizers. Bruschetta is easy to make and it’s always delicious, so since I had a batch of homemade pesto, I decided to add a fun twist on a classic.  This is a great appetizer to serve with an Italian meal or you can eat it just by itself, it’s actually what I had for lunch yesterday 😉

How to make easy Pesto Bruschetta

To make Pesto Bruschetta you need:

1 Baguette
Some olive oil
Pesto – I used homemade pesto
Diced tomatoes, you can use canned but I prefer fresh personally
Parmesan Cheese

To make Pesto Bruschetta you simply:

Slice the bread then toast it in the oven.
Top each slice with pesto, add tomatoes and a little Parmesan cheese
Now you can toss it change in the oven to warm the tomatoes, but you don’t have to, it’s a personal preference.

How to make Pesto Bruschetta

My husband doesn’t like warm tomatoes, in fact one of my closest friends doesn’t either, so when I make this easy appetizer I usually don’t toss it back in the oven.  If you want your tomatoes a tad warm and that Parmesan cheese melted, put the bruschetta back in the oven for a few minutes at 350 degrees or on broiler for just a few, and watch it so it doesn’t burn!

Nutrition Tips For Runners

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

Taking care of your body before and after a race or any form of exercise is very important to your overall health.  Read these nutrition tips for runners and be prepared for your next race. While this post is sponsored by Florida Dairy Farmers, all opinions and my love of dairy are my own.

Simple Nutrition Tips For Runners

Nutrition Tips For Runners

Most runners pay attention to what they eat since their nutritional intake provides the fuel that allows them to run. It is also very important to refuel, recover and rehydrate your body after a run (or any workout). Being aware of what your body needs can help you make sure that endurance, strength, and overall health will always be a part of your running routine.

I ran my first half marathon almost 10 years ago here in St. Pete. My sister-in-law was coming to visit and asked me if I would do it with her, and I agreed. I was hooked. I have always been a runner, but this was my first half marathon and I loved it! So many of us running together with a common goal, everyone encouraging one another, and the sense of accomplishment when you cross the finish line is like no other.

I did my second half marathon shortly after that as a St. Jude Hero. I ran for a cause that I believe in and was honored to be a part of that race. That half marathon I ran alone and I remember crossing the finish line freezing, it was November in Memphis Tennessee, and I looked around thinking What do I do NOW? A volunteer handed me a foil blanket and a container of chocolate milk. Assuming they knew what they were doing, I promptly wrapped myself in the blanket to stop shivering and drank the chocolate milk. Still to this day, I remember the chocolate milk “coating” my empty and exhausted stomach. That volunteer knew exactly what I needed. And now, after every race I look for chocolate milk at the finish line.

Healthy Eating Tips For Runners

I now know that the volunteer handed me low fat chocolate milk because chocolate milk has what your body needs to refuel, recover and rehydrate. Low fat chocolate milk not only has carbohydrates and high-quality protein, but the fluids and electrolytes in chocolate milk help refuel the body by replenishing sweat loss. Chocolate milk is a natural source of high-quality protein, it has a 3:1 carb-to-protein ratio to refuel your muscles, and it has B vitamins to help convert food to energy. So, I think it’s safe to say that Chocolate Milk is the Ultimate Recovery Drink.

Nutrition Tips For All Runners

Of course, you need to be aware of many things your body needs as a runner and that’s why I am sharing these nutrition tips for runners.

Nutrition Tips For New Runners

5 Nutrition Tips For Runners

Dietary Fat

Runners take in approximately 65 percent of calories from carbohydrates, 25 percent from fat, and 10 percent from protein. It is essential to maintain a healthy diet for an active lifestyle. Depriving oneself of healthy fats can adversely affect skin and hair, and can also leave runners perpetually hungry.

Protein

Though carbohydrates provide a well-known boost to runners, protein is equally important in maintaining a healthy running routine. Protein repairs muscles after exercise, protecting the body against injury and strengthening it for future runs. Protein-rich foods and drinks include beans, fish, soy and dairy products, chocolate milk and nuts.

Calcium from Dairy

Runners who do not consume enough calcium are also more prone to muscle cramping. Women, in particular, need healthy doses of calcium in their diet, as insufficient amounts could weaken bones and lead to osteoporosis.

Dairy products, like chocolate milk, contain the most concentrated amounts of calcium.  The USDA says adults should consume three servings of milk (or yogurt or cheese) everyday. A serving size of dairy is 1 cup of milk or yogurt, 1.5 ounces of natural cheese or 2 ounces of processed cheese.

Iron

All athletes face iron depletion through sweating, to maintain a healthy running routine, aim for 15 milligrams of iron each day.

Though lean cuts of red meat are an excellent source of iron, you can also attain the daily dose through mineral supplements and multivitamins. Iron-rich plant sources like beans, dried fruit, and kale are best eaten with citrus fruits, as vitamin C aids its absorption.

Eating for Good Health

Though runners sometimes oscillate between eating too much on the assumption that they’ll burn off the calories, or eating too little in an attempt to expedite weight loss, a healthy medium is best for maintaining health and avoiding injury. Be mindful of your body’s unique needs to help sustain a healthy running routine for life.

Best Nutrition Tips For Runners

Preparing for your next run is usually on the forefront of your mind, but you won’t be ready for your next run if you don’t recover from your last run.  Sports medicine doctor Nicholas DiNubile, MD says recovery is the next frontier in training and achieving your peak performance. Post-workout recovery means consuming key nutrients like high-quality protein and carbs, and Dr. DiNubile also mentions that chocolate milk is a great choice for pros and everyday exercisers alike.

If you live in the South, you can still appreciate a good glass of wine.  In fact, you can still enjoy a beautiful local winery.  While, the South is not Wine Country, there are definitely still wineries in the south to visit.  Cheers!

The Best Wineries In The South To Visit

The Best Wineries In The South To Visit

When you are thinking about finding an awesome winery producing wines in the United States it is unlikely that you think about the southeastern United States as one of the popular wine regions. There are some really wonderful wineries to see here in the South though. So let’s talk about some of the wineries that you need to visit here in the southeast.  Keep in mind, the climate in the south is very different than what you would find in Napa or even Michigan, so don’t expect to sip on similar flavor profile wines.  Expect a more “fruity” wine, Muscadine wines are prevalent here in the South which will add a touch of sweetness and you probably won’t find a wine that is full-bodied.

Satisfy your sweet tooth with this easy homemade Rocky Road Fudge recipe.  Prepped in about 3 minutes this easy fudge recipe is a family favorite!

3 Minute 4 Ingredient Rocky Road Fudge

3 Minute Rocky Road Fudge

Got three minutes and 4 ingredients?  Then you can make this easy homemade rocky road fudge.  My daughter absolutely loves to bake, but with the temperatures up into the 90s here in Florida, I asked her to refrain from using the oven for too long.  So, she decided to make fudge.  She looked in the pantry and found some peanuts and marshmallows so it was Rocky Road Fudge for the win.

How to make Rocky Road Fudge

What you need to make 3 minute rocky road fudge is; peanuts, chocolate chips, marshmallows and sweetened condensed milk.  Easy enough right?  I thought so!

To make your 3 minute rocky road fudge you combine the chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk into a microwave safe bowl and toss it in the microwave for about 2 minutes. When it done, you stir it so that it’s mixed well and then pour in the chopped peanuts and marshmallows. Now you will pour that into a pan and let it cool before letting everyone eat it.

How to make 3 minute Rocky Road Fudge

I will openly admit that one batch of homemade fudge rarely makes it more than 24 hours in my house.

Summer Sunset Cocktail

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

Sip on summer with this beautifully refreshing Summer Sunset Cocktail. Made with fresh juices and lots of ice, this Summer Vodka Cocktail can actually be enjoyed all year long.

Summer Sunset Cocktail

Summer Sunset Cocktail

There is no reason to stick to just wine in summer when the availability of fresh fruit juice means there is a ready supply to make cocktails! This summery cocktail uses orange and cranberry juice in order to make a sweet-tasting drink that is great to enjoy with friends. This Summer Sunset Cocktail is a mixture between a Sea Breeze cocktail (an originally gin-based cocktail in the 1920s, but has changed into being vodka based) and a Screwdriver cocktail (apparently invented in the 1940s by an American who couldn’t find a anything to stir his drink besides a screwdriver), but with an added kick of alcohol from Peach Schnapps. People sometimes tell me they find ingredients on Weekly Ads.

Summer Sunset Vodka Cocktail

I love that this Summer Sunset Cocktail is light and fruity, it’s perfect for sipping poolside while waiting for that gorgeous Summer Sunset. There’s just something magical about watching a summer sunset while sipping on a refreshing cocktail.

The recipe below makes enough for an average size pitcher, roughly enough for four big glasses.  But in the printable one below, I tailored the cocktail recipe for just one glass, because I don’t see anything wrong with enjoying this beautiful cocktail by yourself!

Best Summer Sunset Cocktail

Equipment Required to Make a Pitcher Of Summer Sunset Cocktails

Pitcher
Long spoon/skewer to mix
Measuring spoon/spirits measure for alcohol

Ingredients Required for Summer Sunset Cocktails

Vodka
Peach Schnapps
Lemonade
Cold orange juice (tangerine juice would also be amazing!)
Cold cranberry juice
Lots of ice cubes

Easy Florida Sunset Vodka Cocktail

Directions To Make A Pitcher of Summer Sunset Cocktails

First, put some ice into the empty pitcher. It is preferable to have almost a quarter of the pitcher full in order to keep the drink cool while drinking, which adds to the fruity ice-lolly flavor, which makes it taste so sweet and summery.

Pour in 1/2 cup vodka, then add 1/4 cup Peach Schnapps. Fill the pitcher half full with lemonade and stir. Mixing is essential as is makes such the alcohol is evenly distributed and is not just sitting at the bottom amongst the ice.

The rest of the pitcher should be filled with orange and cranberry juice, about half of each. The volume of each depends on the size of the pitcher used, but 2 cups of each is average in a 2-liter pitcher. This is about the size of an average carton of store-bought fruit juice.

If you wanted to make the cocktail a bit fruitier, you could add orange slices added to the pitcher.

To add an extra touch of elegance and flavor, garnish the serving glasses with fresh orange slices or even some fresh berries. Not only do they look beautiful, but they also infuse the cocktail with additional fruity notes as they sit in the glass.

Florida Sunset Cocktail

What are some ways to customize this cocktail?

The juices can be easily changed in this Summer Cocktail depending on your taste; for example, the cranberry juice could be changed to pineapple or mango juice if you think the cranberry juice is too sour. If wanted, the flavor of schnapps could also be changed. Raspberry vodka would also gives the cocktail a lovely, sweet, summery taste but it would make it even more fruity.

One of the things I love most about this cocktail is how it brings people together. Whether you’re hosting a party or enjoying a quiet evening alone, the Summer Sunset Cocktail is perfect.

Now that you know how to make enough of my Summer Sunset Cocktails for a party, let’s go over how to make one just for you 😉

Sit back and celebrate summer with this Summer Sunset Cocktail. Refreshing and fruity, but not too sweet this will soon be one of your favorite summer cocktails.

The colors of this cocktail obviously remind me of the sunset, I love watching the sunset here in Florida.  The gorgeous orange hues blend into that perfect pink color just before the sun tells us Good Night. It’s really rather magical, it never gets old.
