When buying fresh produce, it may seem difficult to keep your fresh produce fresh all week. Here are the best tips for storing fresh fruit and vegetables.

Tips For Storing Fresh Produce

In today’s busy lifestyle, it can be difficult to make the weekly grocery shopping trip last long enough to feed the family for the week. Americans waste more than 23 billion pounds and $24 billion worth of fresh produce each year because it spoils before we can eat it. That’s 187 pounds and $192 per household!

As always, I recommend buying local when it comes to fresh produce (and everything else!).  Whether it’s supporting your local farmers market, buying from the grocery store and making sure the products are local, or buying from the United States.  Food safety and domestic food security should always be something that crosses your mind when grocery shopping.

It’s frustrating when fruit and vegetable products go off before they can be consumed. Wasted food impacts the environment, costs money, and causes inconvenience to the cook. By observing a few simple rules, it is possible to lengthen the shelf life of many fruits and vegetables, preserving vitamin and mineral contents and keeping them fresher for longer.

Another great way to make sure you are reducing food waste is to meal plan. When you meal plan, you make a simple plan to utilize what you bought for the week. Get this free meal planning printable to help you meal plan and use the produce saving tips below to help you save money and reduce food waste.

The following tips are designed to help make the most out of the produce purchased, increasing shelf life and optimizing produce storage conditions.

Best Tips For Storing Fresh Produce

Tips and Tricks to Optimize the Shelf Life of Fresh Produce:

  • Apples should always be kept cold. They emit a high amount of a gas called ethylene, which accelerates the decomposition of other produce, so they should always be kept separate from other fresh produce.
  • Asparagus should be stored in the refrigerator, with the stems standing in a small amount of water to preserve freshness.
  • Broccoli can be plunged into very cold water to revive it if it becomes wilted, this will crisp it up and make it ready for consumption.
  • Honeydew and Cantaloupe melons should be stored separately, as they react and rot more quickly if stored together.
  • Cucumber should be kept very cool, as it is quick to soften and over-ripen if in a warmer temperature.
  • Green beans should be kept at 10 degrees and consumed within two days for optimum freshness.
  • Grapes should never be washed when storing, as their natural bloom protects against ripening.
  • Bananas act as an accelerator on other fruit and vegetables, causing them to ripen too quickly, keep them out of the refrigerator, and preferably hung in a cool place.
  • Oranges should be kept separated from other porous foods such as eggs and cheese, as their odor is easily absorbed.
  • Leave greens/stalks on foods such as strawberries and tomatoes to lengthen their shelf life.
  • The refrigerator door is the coldest place in the fridge, so it is ideal for keeping perishables such as milk at optimum temperature.

Tips For Storing Fresh Produce

Preventing Ethylene Gas Production For Fresh Produce

All fruit and vegetables naturally produce ethylene gas as they age and ripen. Ethylene gas is odorless, tasteless, and harmless, but the gas given off builds up in the refrigerator causing fresh produce to rot prematurely. There are a number of products on the market designed to stave off production of the gas, lengthening the shelf life of all fruit and vegetables purchased.

Other Tips for Lengthening Shelf Life Of Fresh Produce & Products

Products such as mushrooms and strawberries should be placed in the refrigerator with their packaging punctured to allow air to circulate. This inhibits excess dampness, which can greatly speed up decomposition.

Always wrap the bread in a polythene bag after purchasing, as this slows down the process of decomposition and stops it from going stale so quickly. Other products such as biscuits and cakes should be kept in sealed air-tight containers in a cool, dry place.

Nothing quite says fall like Apple Cider. Make it a Spiked Hot Apple Cider and you are talking my language 😉 Cooler weather often calls for family gatherings and time outside that’s why I love that this cocktail recipe actually makes 16 servings. Plus, it’s really easy to make!

I do recommend using real apple cider, not the stuff that looks like apple juice. You can usually find real apple cider in the produce section of most stores. If you are lucky enough to have an apple orchard close by, definitely head there to get your fresh apple cider! It doesn’t get much fresher than directly from the apple orchard.

Yes, absolutely! Simply leave out the cinnamon schnapps to make this into a decadent hot apple cider.

Best Day Trips From Nice France

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

Nice is known for beauty and high class views and relaxation. If you are visiting Nice France, you may want to explore surrounding areas, so I have gathered the best day trips from Nice.
Best Day Trips From Nice France Antibes Alley

Best Day Trips From Nice France

Nice is a fantastic destination to include on any trip to France. It’s one of the biggest cities on the French Mediterranean coast and not far from the French Alps. The city has a strong Italian influence but street signs are bilingual in French and Occitan, the local language. Nice offers a variety of activities. Whether you prefer taking in the sun on the Promenade d’Anglais, marveling at the crystal clear waters of the gorgeous Côte d’Azur or sampling the local cuisine. Because of its fantastic public transport connections, you can also plan fantastic day trips from Nice.

Whether you want to visit glamorous Cannes, the world’s second-smallest country Monaco, or the picturesque villages of Vence and Èze, there’s something for everyone in the vicinity of Nice. Shopping, hiking, gambling – whatever you may be interested in you can do on one of the following day trips from Nice. If you wanted to you could even go to Italy. And the best part is that some of these locations can even be done on the same day.

Check out these day trips from Nice:

Antibes

Antibes is particularly popular because of its stunning beaches with blue waters. While Nice has its own beach, it has pebbles and may not be ideal for all vacationers. A trip to Antibes and its white sandy beaches is the perfect solution. There’s a reason French families frequent this destination in the summer.

But Antibes has more to offer than sunshine and sandy beaches. Picasso fans may want to visit the Picasso Museum located in the painter’s house. And history buffs can admire the 16th-century Fort Carré. In the old town, you can find the famous Marché Provençal every day except Mondays. It’s the perfect place to stock up on fresh regional produce. But if you prefer to go for a stroll along the coastline or the marina Antibes is still a great option for one of your day trips from Nice.

Because Antibes is on the way from Nice to Cannes you can combine the two in one day trip.

Cannes

Cannes is only a few minutes from Antibes so why not visit both of them in one day? Glamorous Cannes is most famous for the Cannes Film Festival in May. However, the former fishing village exudes elegance all year round. Yachts, private beaches, luxury hotels, and high-end shopping make Cannes the playground of the rich and famous. Take a walk along the Croisette, the waterfront promenade, and enjoy the warm weather and glistening sun.

But there is another, more rustic feel to Cannes once you enter its Old Town, Le Suquet. From the castle, you get stunning views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. And for something a little more mysterious, head to the Tour du Masque (Tower of the Mask). The tower is said to be haunted by the ghost of the Man in the Iron Mask.

Best Day Trips From Nice France Monaco Cathedral

Monaco

When planning your day trips from Nice you absolutely must include Monaco. The second-smallest and most expensive country in the world is world-famous for its casino and the Grand Prix. Yachts and luxury cars exist in abundance in the principality of Monaco.

Monaco City is the old town of the city-state and invites you to experience a different side of the city. Don’t forget to visit the Prince’s Palace, the Cathedral with Grace Kelly’s remains, or the stunning Exotic Garden. You shouldn’t miss out on a day trip to Monaco from Nice.

Best Day Trips From Nice France Menton

Menton

Menton is a town between Monaco and Italy that is famous for its Lemon Festival. Because of its location, many tourists overlook this gorgeous town. But it’s absolutely worth a visit. You could even head here for a few hours after exploring Monaco.

Menton offers quite a variety of things to see. From pretty beaches to impressive churches and an elaborate cemetery, there are different ways to spend your time in Menton. Like many towns on the French Riviera, Menton also has beautiful gardens and parks. The Mediterranean climate allows for a variety of plants to grow here. Because the town is located on a hill you will do some hiking so make sure to wear sturdy shoes. And if you’re up for it you can even walk all the way to Italy along the sea. But not before you buy some citrus souvenirs. The local lemons are milder in taste than other varieties.

Best Day Trips From Nice France Vence

Vence

Vence is a town in the hills with lovely views of the sea. While most people only make it to Saint-Paul-de-Vence on their day trips from Nice, Vence is well worth a visit of its own. The picturesque town has always attracted famous painters and writers with its gorgeous old town and fantastic climate. Vence gets its fair share of tourists but still kept its authentic character which you can explore on a walk through the quaint alleys.

Visit the Saint-Veran Cathedral with a Chagall mosaic and marvel at the Chapelle du Rosaire des Dominicaines de Vence created by Matisse which he considered his masterpiece. But Vence is also the perfect town if you simply want to sit down at a café or restaurant and enjoy the typical French atmosphere.

Best Day Trips From Nice France Eze View to Cap Ferrat

Èze

The village of Èze consists of a beautiful seaside resort and a breathtaking village up in the hills. If you don’t have the time to do several day trips from Nice then I suggest you make Èze a priority. Because the village combines both the sea, an excellent view from the mountainside, and has beautiful cobblestone alleys it perfectly represents the French Riviera with all its diverse attractions.

Again, there is a beautiful botanical garden that offers spectacular panoramic views down to the sea. As the hike up from the sea to the village can be very tiring, you may instead want to walk back down which is less strenuous. The Nietzsche Path is 2.1 km long and takes you up or down 400 m. It’s a hike of medium difficulty so you should have a decent fitness level. Good walking shoes are a must here!

Grasse

Along with wine and cheese, perfume is probably one of the most French things we can think of. Grasse is a town that allows you to learn more about the perfume-making process. Several perfume factories offer tours where you can find out how all the gorgeous flowers in the region are made into perfumes. The perfume capital of the world also hosts a yearly Jasmin Festival in August as well as a rose exhibition in May.

However, if you’re not interested in the history of perfume, you can simply take a stroll through the Old Town. If you want to see three Rubens paintings for free, head to Grasse Cathedral.

Saint-Paul-de-Vence

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a medieval village in the hills on the way from Nice to Vence. Like Vence, it has attracted many artists over the decades. The picturesque village is pedestrian-only which makes for fantastic walks. Of course, art is the main attraction in the village with museums and galleries showcasing modern and contemporary art.

Because Saint-Paul-de-Vence is so close to Vence you can definitely combine the two in one day trip from Nice. As an added bonus, you get to see the picturesque landscape and villages on the scenic bus ride.

Villefranche-sur-Mer

If you’re more interested in relaxing on the beach Villefranche-sur-Mer is an excellent choice. This town has established itself as one of the most popular beach resorts on the French Riviera due to its sandy beaches. In the off-season, the town is a lot less busy, and you can still have a wonderful walk along the waterfront. And if you’re into water sports you’ll be excited to find out how deep the water is. Villefranche is perfect for scuba diving but also sailing and rowing.

But Villefranche also invites you to visit its beautiful Old Town, the stunning Chapelle Saint-Pierre de Villefranche-sur-Mer decorated by Jean Cocteau, and the Saint-Elme Citadel. As the town is so close to Nice you could make it here on a hike along the Mediterranean Sea. An easier option is the train which should only take about 15 minutes.

Plan Your Day Trips From Nice Now

As you can see there are plenty of opportunities for day trips from Nice. Whether you want to experience the glitz and glamor traditionally associated with the Côte d’Azur, go hiking in the surrounding hills, or see the typical French towns with their cobblestone alleys, on these day trips from Nice you can see it all.

And because Nice has fantastic train and bus connections to all these places you won’t even need a car to experience the best of the French Riviera.

8 Fitness Tips for Beginners

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

Exercise is proven to improve your overall health. Use these fitness tips for beginners to help you on your road to a healthy lifestyle.
Tips For Getting Active

Fitness Tips for Beginners

So you have decided that you are ready to make your health and fitness a priority, but how do you start being more active? You have come to the right place! Check out these fitness tips for beginners and get motivated to workout. It’s been proven that exercise is good for us, it can improve mental health, reduce our risk of disease and it can help us lose weight. There are quite a few different types of exercise and yoga so before to think about which options are best for you. But don’t let the options overwhelm you and stop you from starting to exercise, making the decision to start to exercise is one of the best decisions you will make. So, let’s get you started on your new fitness journey.

Exercise Tips For Beginners

Here are 8 Tips To Get Physically Active

1. Set Realistic Goals

Make sure that when you are setting your fitness and activity goals that you keep them realistic, especially in the beginning. If you set yourself up for failure right from the start by setting an unrealistic goal for yourself, you are not nearly as likely to continue sticking with it.

Keep in mind that all progress is a step, jog, or crunch in the right direction. If when you begin your fitness journey you are simply walking around the block several times a week, it is still physical activity, and it is better than doing nothing at all.

2. Warm-up

Warming up, and stretching out before a workout is not just for fitness professionals, they are for everyone. Warming up or stretching before you begin a workout can help to prevent injuries, increase your flexibility, and prevent muscle soreness after your workout is complete.

3. Cool Down

Cooling down after your workout is every bit as important as warming up. Taking a few minutes to do some light walking, stretches or even deep breathing exercises helps your body to return to its regular state. Your heart rate, pulse, and breathing will all return to their normal rate. Cooling down can also help to prevent muscle soreness after a workout.

4. Make It A Habit

Stick to your routine. The more you exercise, the more you will want to exercise. A great idea is blocking out some time on your daily calendar.  What time of day works best for you?  Before work?  After work?  During lunch?  Find a time that you think you can stick to and try it.  Remember you can adapt your timing, so if you try mornings and that doesn’t work, switch it to the evenings.  The important part is making it a habit.

5. Find a Partner

Working out with a partner can make a trip to the gym or going for a run more of a social outing than a chore. Having someone to work out with also helps both of you to be accountable to each other. It is easy to tell yourself that you will hit the gym tomorrow instead, but having someone who expects you to be there makes it more difficult to blow off. Having a workout partner also gives you both someone to celebrate reaching your goals with which can encourage you to keep pushing ahead.

6. Listen to Your Body

We have all heard the saying “no pain, no gain” but it is not completely true, especially for fitness beginners. While some exercises or stretches may feel a little uncomfortable nothing should hurt you and cause real pain. If you are doing an exercise that causes pain you need to stop and re-evaluate. Pain indicates that there is something wrong, and if you are focusing on becoming more fit you don’t want to do any damage to your body.  And be sure to check with your doctor before starting a new workout or if you are in pain.

7. Eat Healthy

If you want to see the best results from your new fitness routine then you may need to make some adjustments to your diet as well. This doesn’t mean that you can’t indulge in the occasional treat, but you might want to make a conscious effort to make healthier food choices at least most of the time.  Eating healthy doesn’t have to be bland, there are many healthy recipes out there that the whole family will love.

8. Stay Hydrated

Drinking water throughout the day is a must for maintaining your healthy hydration levels. It is especially important before, during and after exercise, especially when exercising in hot temperatures. A general rule is that you should drink 8 8 ounce glasses of water a day, the rule is commonly known as 8×8. Your body needs water.

Fitness Tips For Beginners Staying Hydrated

Getting fit, and making healthier choices for your body doesn’t have to be difficult. Follow these fitness tips for beginners and get yourself on track for a healthier body, and a more active lifestyle. Remember to start with reasonable fitness goals, stay consistent, follow these tips to make your workout more enjoyable and you will be feeling and looking better in no time!

Top Things To Do Off The Las Vegas Strip

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

There is more to Las Vegas than casinos, shows, and lots of pretty lights!  Take a break from the action and discover these top things to do off the Vegas Strip.
Things To Do In Las Vegas Off The Strip

Top Things To Do Off The Las Vegas Strip

Here’s a detailed account of interesting places located not too far off the Las Vegas Strip, including Mt. Charleston, Red Rock Canyon, the Hoover Dam, and Henderson, NV. If you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the Strip for a bit longer, be sure to check out the top day trips from Las Vegas.

When most people think of Las Vegas, their speculation or actual memories are often limited to the flamboyant casinos, the innumerable neon lights, and the ever-present gambling on The Strip. The stunning world surrounding it is often neglected by both business and pleasure travelers, but it may just be exactly what they need.

From the snow-capped mountain vistas of Mt. Charleston to breath-taking hikes in Red Rock Canyon to boating on Lake Mead, the scenery and climates vary drastically from the typically presumed desert terrain of the area. And if you are seeking a more leisurely experience away from The Strip, then the city of Henderson just next door has it all.

Best Things To Do Off The Las Vegas Strip

Mt. Charleston

Only about 35 miles northwest of Las Vegas, you’ll find the cool mountain breezes of Mt. Charleston. It makes for the best escape from the summer heat and for a prime location for skiing and snowboarding in the winter months. The mountain offers 52 miles of stunning hiking trails as well featuring waterfalls, forests, and a wide range of plants and animals.

Red Rock Canyon

About 15 miles west of Las Vegas, you’ll see the spectacular rock formations of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Around 1.2 million people visit Red Rock each year to explore its plethora of hiking or scrambling trails and mountain climbing faces. There is also a 13 mile scenic drive through the park featuring several stops along the way to pull off and enjoy the magnificent views and hopefully spot some of the abundant desert wildlife.

The Hoover Dam and Lake Mead

Just 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas lies one of the most awe-inspiring man-made marvels, the Hoover Dam. It spans the breadth of the Colorado River and supplies much of the southwest United States with power and water. Tours of the dam have been carried out since 1937 and provide an up-close and personal look at some of the finest architectural structures you’ll ever come across. In October 2010, the gorgeous Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge opened to carry traffic over the Colorado River between Nevada and Arizona.

Adjacent to the dam is the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which boasts 1.5 million acres of land surrounding the lake itself. Lake Mead is a great place for boating, swimming, hiking, biking, and all sorts of outdoor activities. There are also several tours and cruises available.

Henderson, NV

Las Vegas’ neighbor city Henderson may not be as extensively known, but it does have many similar experiences to Las Vegas in a much more casual setting. Some of the finest casinos, like the M Resort and Green Valley Ranch, are situated there. The Green Valley area is also home to The District, a vibrant outdoor mall of shops and restaurants that makes for an excellent day trip or night out.

There are also many other places of note-off The Strip like the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Ethel M’s Chocolate Factory, and Cactus Garden, and Town Square. The Las Vegas Strip is indeed a wondrous place to visit, but the surrounding mountains, parks, landmarks, and local casinos make for a trip in themselves.

These breakfast protein cookies are delicious, even better when topped with my homemade vanilla yogurt and a slice of golden kiwi.

Best Gluten Free Protein Cookies

My protein cookies are made with almonds, sunflower seeds, banana, freeze-dried apples and a dash of cinnamon. I added Crispy Green Freeze Dried Apples to these protein cookies because they added a touch of sweetness…and who doesn’t love apples?  Using the freeze-dried apples was also a lot easier than using a fresh apple in this recipe, I didn’t have to peel or chop anything up, I simply used my fingers to break the freeze-dried apples into smaller pieces.

Tasty Gluten Free Protein Cookies

Topping these Easy Apple Banana Protein Cookies with a scoop of yogurt adds additional protein and a source of natural probiotics. Now topping your protein breakfast cookie with yogurt and a slice of kiwi adds even more potassium, a touch of sweetness and lots of vitamin C. Things To Do In Greenwich London

Top Things To Do In Greenwich London

There are so many things to do in Greenwich London, fun for the family, solo travelers, and couples. People are known to spend half a day to a day visiting here. Greenwich is a borough in London, and is located on the banks of the River Thames. The most well-known attraction in Greenwich is Greenwich Park. Greenwich Park is one of eight royal parks of London, meaning, since the 15th Century, the Royal Family used this ground for recreational and hunting purposes, deer, and other wildlife. Now, the park protects these wild animals for the public to enjoy. We’ll talk about that later in the post.  This post is actually brought to you by Annisa at London Travellers who lives in London, so you know you are getting all the insider tips on visiting Greenwich London.

Here are your highlights of visiting Greenwich:

  • Walking, running, and cycling
  • Shopping and eating
  • The Cutty Sark Ship
  • The Fan Museum
  • National Maritime Museum

Things to see in Greenwich Park:

  • The Planetarium
  • The Royal Observatory Greenwich
  • Prime Meridien
  • The Queen’s House
  • The Rose Garden
  • The Queen’s Orchard
  • Deer Enclosure
  • Flower Garden

How to get to Greenwich

  • Greenwich is in South East London and it’s conveniently accessible to Central London. You’ll be there in minutes.
  • You can get there on the DLR, the South-eastern Train, by boat along the River Thames, on the cable car and by tube.
  • By bus, you can get there on the 108, 177, 188, and 286.
  • By train, if you’re coming from the South or South-eastern Train, get off at Lewisham and take the DLR towards Bank.
  • If you’re coming from the North, it’s better to get the tube, take the Jubilee Line (grey) and get off at Greenwich.
  • Unlike the websites, this post will tell you what to expect from this area, what attractions to see first and how long to take in each attraction.

Walking, Cycling and Running in Greenwich

Walking and running are encouraged when visiting Greenwich. You can get to Greenwich by public transport but when you get there, walking and running is what everyone does. Everywhere you turn, there’s always something to see and do and people can spend a day here covering all the attractions in the Greenwich area.

When it comes to cycling, it’s best to cycle in Greenwich Park, at least you’d have the green space and paths to cycle. You can cycle in the main roads, but you must be careful as it’s a busy road and there’s usually traffic in Central Greenwich. The roads can come from different directions and if you’re not used to the roads in the UK, it can be dangerous for you to cycle. Even experienced cyclists have had accidents here, so, make sure you cycle in Greenwich Park, it’s much safer.

If you want to visit all the paid attractions, make sure you visit them first, after, you can relax at the park, have lunch and dinner in one of the British pubs for fish and chips. Read further to find out more about the paid attractions. Queen’s House, the National Maritime Museum are all free, except the Cutty Sark. £15 per adult.

When you’re walking, make sure you cover Greenwich Market, Cutty Sark, the view of the River Thames and Canary Wharf, go up the hill towards the Royal Observatory and General Wolfe statue, cover the Rose Garden, the Queen’s Orchard, Deer Enclosure, and walk up Croom’s Hill where you’ll enjoy a row of Georgian houses and peaceful environment, away from the busy Greenwich Park, and the Flower Garden. All free to visit. Keep reading below for more details on these free attractions.

The weather can be windy for ten minutes, sunny the next minute and rain after, so be prepared to pack the right travel essentials for your trip.

As for the kids, aside from the activities mentioned above, there’s also Greenwich Children’s Playground where kids can play in the sandpit, climb a wooden castle, and drop down a slide.

Shopping and Eating in Greenwich

Shopping and eating in Greenwich are easy. With just a few steps from Greenwich Park, Greenwich High Street offers dishes and coffee shops from around the world, not to mention several pubs you can choose from for traditional fish and chips and other British food. To be honest, fish & chips anywhere tastes the same, so it doesn’t matter where you eat.

Check out The Gypsy Moth, King’s Arms, Admiral Hardy and Greenwich Tavern. 4 pubs I recommend for traditional British food and beer. British pubs can be very crowded and there are limited seats available, so make sure you get there as early as possible or book a table. However, not all pubs accept table bookings.

Of course, check out various vintage shops and stalls in and around the busy Greenwich Market ranging from fashion, souvenirs, book shops and many more.

Top Things To Do In Greenwich London

The Cutty Sark Ship

The Cutty Sark Ship is located by the River Thames, overlooking Canary Wharf. The Cutty Sark was a famous and fastest clipper ship in its time.

The ship had been nicknamed after a witch called Nannie (Cutty Sark). It was taken from Robert Burn’s poem Tam O’Shanter.

You can take a self and private guided tour and learn more than 100 years of the ship’s history and story.

Originally, its purpose was to import tea from China but later, travelled to Australia importing wool.

Later during the century, the expansion of steam engines became popular and Cutty Sark was renamed Ferreira by a Portuguese company. Since it was bought by the Portuguese, it was still a cargo ship until 1922. It changed into a training ship by sea captain, Wilfred Downman.

The Cutty Sark caught fire in May 2007 by renovation workers where they left the vacuum cleaner for two days. 90% of the ship is still undamaged and the ship is bigger than its exterior. What’s so admirable is, as soon as you step below deck, you can see the glass roof which consists of geometric shapes. It seems like staring into an evening sky from the bottom.

You will see the kitchen they used with replicas of cutleries, the room where they held meetings and the intricate exterior designs including “Neptune’s wooden angels” at the end of the ship. You’ll also discover a small office room used by the Master and information on tea and wool imported from China and Australia. Other areas worth visiting is the lower cargo area where they stored teas and the entrance to the master’s cabin. Spend at least 1 hour here.

The Fan Museum

Situated between rows of Georgian houses, you wouldn’t notice the museum as you walk up Croom’s Hill. As you see a four-sided bricked building sticking out, with no windows and doors, the museum is literally next to that bricked building. You’ll see a black door which will lead you to the museum.

If you’re interested in fans from around the world, from the 18th – 20th Century as well as discovering different designs from lace, folding to folding fans, then The Fan Museum is for you. Here are some of the collections you can see inside the of The Fan Museum:

  • A portrait of The Siege of Gibraltar – 1782
  • Lacquer fan made from China – Late 19th century
  • 1920 Pocket Ventilator
  • English Fan Leaf showing prints from the classic era – 1810
  • French Brise fan designed with a garland of flowers, supposed to represent Napoleon – 1820
  • Spanish Brise fan made from tortoiseshells – 1900 – 1910
  • Chinese Brise fan made from bones
  • Various fixed fans made from peacock feathers, fixed woven fan with seashell decorations and wooden fixed fan designed as a sunflower.
  • You can also have afternoon tea here.

This is a great museum because you’ll see designs from around the world and most of the fans depict stories from war and general life from the 18th Century to the 20th Century. It doesn’t get too busy here and there’s space to explore the museum. Spend 1 hour here.

While in Croom’s Hill, admire the Georgian architecture as you go up the steep hill. You will feel tired if you’re not fit, but as soon as you get to the top, you’ll catch your breath and feel the peaceful atmosphere, in contrast to the busy Greenwich Park.

Best Things To Do In Greenwich London

National Maritime Museum

If you’re a fan of naval ships and maritime (the name is explanatory), then visit the National Maritime Museum. Free of charge.

Situated on the busy high street of Greenwich, opposite University of Greenwich, the National Maritime Museum consists of life at sea in Britain. From maritime art, cartography, manuscripts, official public records, ship models and plans.

Here are your highlights of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich:

Admiral Horatio Nelson’s Trafalgar Coat which he wore during the Napoleonic War. He wore this coat when he was fatally wounded on board the HMS Victory ship.

JMW Turner’s huge painting depicting life on the ship during the War of Trafalgar. In the picture, the falling flagpole may be a reference to Nelson’s death. There are several seamen trying to save each other from drowning.

You can see a gigantic Ship in a Bottle outside the museum, opposite Greenwich Park. It commemorates Admiral Nelson’s victory with the naval HMS Victory ship.

The Caird Library and Archive consists of 130,000 manuscripts on the history of maritime around the world from the 14th – 20th Centuries.

There are 4 new galleries opening which you can explore.

Sackler Gallery consists of collections of items found in the Pacific by British voyagers for thousands of years. Learn about Captain Cook, boat building, navigation, and Christian missionaries to the island and many more.

Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Gallery consists of items during the exploration of the Polar regions by the British. In this gallery, you will learn about how people have endured the weather while exploring the Polar regions, the food and clothing they wore, and learn about the culture of Arctic regions and the impact it has on the environment in the future.

Piggott Family Gallery consists of collections of the Tudor and Stuart seafarers between the 14th – 16th Century. You will see a detailed wooden model of the Tudor ship, Christopher Columbus, Sir Francis Drake, and Samuel Pepys. You will also learn about the ships involved during the Spanish Armada and the Dutch. Don’t forget to explore more than 130,000 collections of instruments, such as astrolabes, compasses, and telescopes.

The last gallery consists of items from the sea. There are 600 objects in this gallery ranging from a 19th Century sea belt to sea badges and 55 models of ships involved during many British wars. Spend around 1 – 2 hours here.

Greenwich Park

People can spend half a day in Greenwich Park just to enjoy nature with the family and have a picnic. Aside from just sitting on the grass socializing, eating, and drinking, make sure you spare enough time to visit the attractions within the park.

As you reach the park, you will see the National Maritime Museum on your left and the Queen’s House next to it. The Herbaceous Border is the largest herbaceous border in London but not a lot of people pay much attention to it, they just walk by.

It’s advisable that you spend time in all the attractions here and relax in the park after.

Spend time in the Cutty Sark – 1 hour

Spend time in the National Maritime Museum – 1 hour

Spend time in Queen’s House – 1 hour

The Queen’s House

The bright white mansion sits in front of the wide green space of Greenwich Park. It has the characteristics of the Stuart period built between the mid-17th Century. From pictures online, it looks peaceful but when you get there, it’s surrounded by people spending time at the park. The environment is still enjoyable, especially if you go up the hill, you’ll see a great view of Canary Wharf, the Shard, and the O2 Arena.

The Queen’s House was previously a royal resident during the 17th Century (1616 – 1635) and it consists of many art collection and stunning British architectural designs from the Classical period. To visit the Queen’s House, it’s free entry like the National Maritime Museum.

From personal experience, visiting Queen’s House, it’s exceedingly difficult to get information on what each room was used for, but if you’re interested in 17th Century British Classical architecture, then this place is for you.

The Royal Observatory

The Royal Observatory is also situated at the top of the hill in Greenwich Park. The red building you see from the bottom of the park, that’s The Royal Observatory. The Royal Observatory consists of the Planetarium and the Meridien Line and it has been an influence on the history of astronomy.

The Meridien Line

The Meridien Line consists of a line where east meets west and it was a great tool to navigate your way to certain destinations by using the sky and the stars as their map. In the 1800’s, a lot of sea captains used sea charts and Greenwich as its Prime Meridien.

The Planetarium

The Planetarium is great for all the family and all science buffs. Situated at the top of the hill, in the Royal Observatory (you can’t miss it), The Planetarium consists of information on the planet we live on today as well as other planets beyond planet Earth. From learning about the Solar System, the Milky Way, asteroids, the Moon, and galaxy, you’ll be immersed with what lies beyond our planet Earth. Why not learn about astronomy, space, dark matter, and the black hole?

The Planetarium Show takes 30 minutes and you’ll be taken on a “bus tour” to the universe. You’ll hear sound effects as the rockets will take you up into space together with great commentary of the universe.

Things To Do In Greenwich with kids

The Rose Garden

As you meander through Greenwich Park, follow the signpost to the Rose Garden. You will see the Cherry Orchard trees lining up on each side which will lead you to the Rose Garden.

Here, you will see many flower beds ranging from tulips, roses, and other colourful flowers. In June, they said the flowers would be blooming but 30% of the flower beds were still premature. There were several children running around between the flower beds and enjoying the sun.

You will also see the Ranger’s House here. Admire the Georgian mansion, the Georgian style windows, and the classic, red brickwork. Although quite a big mansion, the Ranger’s House looks smaller than it is online. On the other side of the Ranger’s House, you’ll be in Croom’s Hill, a quiet hilly area, away from the busy park life, where you can admire many Georgian houses. Going up Croom’s Hill can be tiring, so beware.

Spend no more than half an hour in The Rose Garden.

Things To Do In Greenwich for families

The Queen’s Orchard

Step into the crackling stony path of the Queen’s Orchards. The Queen’s Orchard has been opened since the 17th Century. Between two orange bricked pillars, you will be able to go through the steel gate decorated with two deer and leaves. Once you’re inside, admire many 16th Century fruit trees from vegetables, flower beds, many pathways, ponds, and one with a lily. Spend no more than half an hour here.

The Flower Garden and Deer Park

The Flower Garden is gated because it closes at a certain time. This is the best thing about the park. As you walk through the garden path, you will notice many tall hundred-year-old oak and ash trees as well as many beautiful colourful flowerbeds. You will also notice many wildlife such as squirrels and pigeons. As you walk further, you will see around twenty round flower beds scattered around the garden in different colours, purple, red, white, green, yellow, and blue. The Flower Garden is very well maintained.

The Deer Park is situated in the Flower Garden since it’s hidden in an “enchanted forest”. As you go inside the “enchanted forest,” you will often smell mud as you go through a dark forest surrounded with tall leafless trees and branches, dead and fallen branches and trees are still used for children to climb up in. It really is an enchanted forest. The muddy footpath will lead you to the deer enclosure.

The deer enclosure is exceedingly small, smaller than you think. Probably around 5 people can fit and enjoy deer watching. The deer here are quite far away and it’s exceedingly difficult to take photos but you can see them. If you want to see a better view of some deer, go to Richmond Park. You can walk, cycle, drive and run there. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to get up close and personal with the deer, unlike the ones here in Greenwich. Be careful, deer here are wild animals, they’re not pets, and it’s advised not to feed them as there are instances where people have been injured.

How To Make Homemade Vanilla Yogurt

How To Make Homemade Vanilla Yogurt

Homemade yogurt. What if I told you that it was actually pretty easy? But, why make homemade yogurt? Well, because it tastes better than store bought. Isn’t that always the case though? When you make something from scratch it always tastes better than if you bought it at the store. Like my homemade strawberry fruit roll-ups. And like my homemade fruit roll-ups, this homemade vanilla yogurt only requires a few ingredients and about 5 minutes of prep time.

Yogurt is a super immunity food that benefits digestion, immune function, eliminates bad bacteria, yeast infections, and reduces inflammation.

There are so many health benefits associated with eating yogurt that it is well worth including yogurt in your meal planning. Add homemade yogurt to your child’s school lunch box, store yogurts in the fridge at work or home, or simply eat yogurt with fresh berries to make a healthy, nutritious super immunity dessert or breakfast. Rather than snacking on “empty” calories, such as chocolate and crisps, making yogurt or fruit smoothie made with yogurt will provide an excellent source of calcium, essential for healthy bones and teeth.

How To Make Homemade Vanilla Yogurt without an instant pot

My daughter and I eat yogurt topped with fresh fruit for breakfast several times a week and while yogurt is indeed available at every local grocery store, I decided that we should make yogurt at home. By making it at home, I know exactly what’s in it and it doesn’t get fresher than homemade 😉 With school starting back up here soon, I wanted to have easy breakfast options ready to go in the refrigerator, and this homemade vanilla yogurt is just that. Easy breakfast options for the win! Once your yogurt is ready, you can easily put in into single serving jars and store them in the refrigerator for up to 10 days. Making the Monday – Friday breakfast rush easy peasy!

Best Homemade Vanilla Yogurt

If you like granola and fresh fruit on your yogurt like we do, you can also make yogurt parfaits the night before. Simply layer your yogurt and topping into a container, cover it and refrigerate. You can actually make yogurt parfaits up to 3 days ahead of time. Again, making that school day breakfast just that much easier.

What are the Health Benefits of Yogurt?

While the vast majority of bacteria found in the gut are actually beneficial, some forms of intestinal bacteria and organisms can lead to multiple health problems. Through eating yogurt, the body is provided with healthy live bacteria, which helps to redress the balance.

Key health benefits and properties associated with eating yogurt are:

  • Probiotics protect the body from harmful bacteria.
  • Healthy bacteria in yogurt produce acids killing germs (e.g., botulism)
  • Reduces antibiotic-associated diarrhea, stomach cramps
  • Limits antibiotic-associated wind, bloating.
  • Reduces infant diarrhea
  • Suppresses symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Eases irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms
  • It helps fight some forms of food poisoning
  • Combines with a high-fiber diet to prevent diverticulitis
  • Reduces thrush/yeast infections
  • It helps reduce yeast infection symptoms
  • Less likely to suffer urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Assists immune system in fighting off germs
  • It helps prevent the recurrence of bladder cancer tumors
  • High calcium content – builds strong bones.
  • Lactose-intolerant sufferers can gain essential calcium sources.

Further health benefits to be gained as a result of eating yogurt on a regular basis are:

  • Supports healthy digestion
  • Eases allergy symptoms
  • Lowers inflammation (ideal for arthritis sufferers)
  • Helps lower cholesterol
  • High source of vitamin K
  • Suppresses bacteria causing mouth ulcers
  • Reduces odor causing bacteria in halitosis (bad breath)
  • Helps improve complexion (external moisturizer)
  • Protects the body from dysentery, cholera

Easy Homemade Vanilla Yogurt

Ok, so let’s to the steps on making this deliciously creamy yogurt at home.

To make vanilla yogurt at home you will need just simple three ingredients:

  • Milk – I used 2% milk. You can substitute whole milk if preferred.
  • Plain yogurt with live cultures – These live cultures are what will work with the milk to actually make your yogurt.
  • Vanilla Extract – Well, we are making vanilla yogurt 😉

How to make yogurt

What equipment do you need at home to make vanilla yogurt?

  • Dutch Oven or heavy pot with a lid.
  • Thermometer – You will have to make sure that the milk reaches two different temperatures.
  • Spatula – For stirring.
  • Measuring Cup.
  • Bowl.
  • Whisk.
  • Oven or someplace you can place the pot with yogurt in it so it can stay warm and cozy.

Easy way to make yogurt

Directions for making homemade yogurt:

  • Pour the milk into a Dutch oven and warm over medium to medium-high heat until it reaches 180° to 200°F. Stir gently as it heats.
  • Now you will cool the milk. You can allow it to cool on the kitchen counter or to speed up the process you can place the dutch oven into an ice bath. Stirring it will help the cooling process and stop a “skin” from forming on the top. You want the milk to cool to 112°F to 115°F.
  • Once the milk is cool, use a measuring cup scoop out about a cup of warm milk from the Dutch oven and put it into a bowl. Add the yogurt and vanilla extract to the bowl and stir or whisk until smooth and the yogurt is dissolved.
  • Pour the milk/yogurt mixture from the bowl back into the Dutch oven and stir/whisk gently.
  • Place the lid on Dutch oven and put it into your TURNED OFF oven. Turn on the oven light and wrap the pot in a dishtowel to keep the milk warm as it sets (ideally around 110°F, though some variance is okay).
  • Now you wait. After 4 hours you can check your yogurt. The longer it sits the thicker and more tart it will become. You can let it sit as long as 8 – 10 hours! The exact time will depend on the temperature of the yogurt, the cultures you used, and how you like your yogurt. If this is your first time making yogurt (like it was mine), check it at the 4 hour mark. If it has the flavor and consistency you like, you can stop there. Avoid checking on, stirring or jostling the Dutch oven while your yogurt is setting. After 4 hours you can shake the bowl ever so gently. Watch for a gelatin-like jiggle. If a slight shake causes a splash (of the milk, not just the whey sitting on top), let it set another hour or two while the yogurt bacteria continue to multiply. Do not stir or disturb your incubating yogurt before it has set. Pouring it into a strainer or another container stops the incubation process.
  • Once your yogurt is set, remove it from the oven. If you see any water on the surface of your yogurt, you can either drain it off or whisk it back into your yogurt before putting it into containers. Whisking the yogurt will give the it a more consistent creamy texture.
  • Store your homemade yogurt in airtight containers in the refrigerator until you are ready to enjoy it! It will thicken a little bit when it’s in the refrigerator. Your delicious homemade yogurt will be good stored in the refrigerator for about 7 – 10 days.

Tasty homemade vanilla yogurt

I hope you enjoy this homemade vanilla yogurt as much as we do!

Tasty homemade yogurt

Here are some common questions about making homemade yogurt, and the answers, of course 😉

Best homemade yogurt

Why type of milk do you use to make yogurt?

You can use any kind of milk from skim to whole, but if you use skim milk you may need to add thickeners (such as unflavored gelatin, nonfat dry milk powder or pectin) to it.

What type of yogurt do you need to use when making yogurt at home?

You need a plain yogurt with live active cultures. The live cultures are what turns the milk into yogurt. I used a plain nonfat yogurt.

What equipment do you need?

All you need is a heavy pot with a lid. I used my Dutch oven. Once the lid is on, a heavy pot like this does a good job of keeping the milk warm and at a steady temperature (ideally around 110°F) while the bacteria work on turning the milk into yogurt. You will also put the pot into an OFF oven with a light on to help it stay warm.

Best homemade yogurt without an instant pot

How long can you store homemade yogurt in the refrigerator?

You can store your homemade yogurt in airtight containers (I used small glass jars) for 7 – 10 days.

Why make homemade yogurt?

I recommend making homemade vanilla yogurt because it extra creamy, delicious and it’s easy to do. Plus, you know exactly what the ingredients are and where your food is coming from.

Homemade Vanilla Yogurt without instant pot

Can you make homemade yogurt without an Instant Pot?

Yes indeed! I didn’t use an Instant Pot to make my homemade vanilla yogurt, I used a dutch oven. You just need a heavy pot with a tight fitting lid.

Homemade Yogurt parfaits

Can you make yogurt with an Instant Pot?

Sure can! There are settings on most Instant Pots to help you easily make yogurt at home. Truth be told, I borrowed my friends because I thought it may be easier and I couldn’t figure it out. However, this was the first time I have ever tried to use an Instant Pot, I am sure it’s easier if you are familiar with them. Using an Instant Pot does not lessen the time required to make yogurt.

How to make yogurt at home

As highlighted above, yogurt is a super immunity food, which has many different health benefits, is high in calcium, and is even suitable for those who are lactose intolerant. Key benefits of eating yogurt regularly include that it protects the body from harmful bacteria, reduces antibiotic-related diarrhea, lowers cholesterol, supports healthy digestion, and reduces halitosis, inflammation, and yeast infections.

Have you ever made yogurt before? What is one of your favorite yogurt toppings?

Why It’s Important To Eat Fruit

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

Fruit is not just delicious, it’s very good for you. Learn why it’s important to eat fruit and the benefits of eating fruit.

What are the benefits of eating fruit

Why It’s Important To Eat Fruit

Fruits are abundant in minerals, vitamins, sugars, and in some cases, even proteins. Maximizing the benefits of fruit is simply a matter of knowing how and when to eat it, and understanding why it’s important to eat it.

The fruit is Mother Nature’s superfood. Fruit is sweet, succulent, refreshing, invigorating, and, let’s not forget…delicious. But besides the taste, the fruit has amazing regenerating and healing properties. If eaten properly, fruit can be the superfood the body needs to help obtain optimum health. After you have purchased your favorite fruits at the farmer’s market or grocer, be sure that you are storing the fruit properly to help prevent them from going bad.

Eat Fruit on an Empty Stomach

To reap the most benefits of fruit, it fruit on an empty stomach.

All foods have different digestion rates, with fruit being among the fastest. It is ready to pass through the stomach into the intestines almost immediately, but if other slower digesting foods are waiting there, this will not happen.

Instead, the fruit will sit on top of the already-eaten meal and will begin to ferment. Eating fruit after a meal is often what causes people to complain of stomachaches and indigestion.

Fruit: The Ultimate Detoxifier

Want to remove dark circles under the eyes, improve skin complexion, promote hair and nail growth, and calm the nervous system? Make sure fruit is a part of your daily meal planning. This is a great way to reveal just how powerful the benefits of fruit are. Be sure to eat only fresh fruit, not canned or cooked, and drink only fresh fruit juice and water.

Benefits of eating fruit

The following is a list of some of the most commonly eaten fruits in North America and their nutritional benefits:

* Apples – There is truth to the saying an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Apples have antioxidants and flavonoids, which enhance the activity of vitamin C as well as contain pectin, which aids in digestion and lowering blood pressure.
* Bananas – The champion among superfoods, bananas have a long list of nutritional benefits: potassium, which lowers blood pressure, preventing heart attacks and strokes, and reduces calcium excretion in the kidneys, aiding to prevent osteoporosis; vitamin B6, which helps boost immunity; folate, a mineral needed for tissue growth; and fiber, which of course keeps everyone regular.
* Kiwi – Small and mighty, kiwis are a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E, and fiber. They also have about twice as much vitamin C as oranges.
* Berries – Berries have among the highest antioxidant power of all organic foods and help protect the body from free radicals and cancer. Berries are loaded with vitamin C, fiber, and folate.
* Oranges – They are still among the best ways to kill a cold, but oranges can also do so much more. Oranges contain folic acid, which aids in proper brain development, and beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant that protects the cells from damage.

Of course, eating too much fruit isn’t good for you either. A balanced diet is always the way to go. If you have questions about exactly what foods are best for you, talk to your doctor.

Top 10 Things to Do in Sarasota

Sarasota is a coastal city in Florida known for its art galleries, wildlife attractions, and annual festivals. The “circus capital of the world” sees over 2.7 million visitors each year, despite having a population of just under 58,000 residents. While the Ringling Brothers Circus made Sarasota their winter home, this city is worth visiting during any season. This especially true when you consider that the city’s main attraction isn’t its beaches – here, it’s all about the arts and animals.  Sarasota is about an hour from Tampa and St. Pete, and is only about 1.5 hours from Fort Myers.

There are so many fun things to do in Sarasota, even if you’re not visiting during a major festival. With a wide range of both indoor and outdoor activities, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to cool off after a day in the sun. As you start planning your vacation, add some of these attractions to your trip itinerary.  Be sure to check out the Sarasota Big Pass for deals and discounts that may be available for restaurants, activities and lodging during your stay.  There are several options on this list that are fun things to do when it rains in Florida too, we are known for an afternoon shower or two.
