Gingerbread Bourbon Bliss Eggnog Cocktail

With only a few ingredients, this cocktail is easy to prepare, making it a perfect choice for holiday parties or gatherings. The simplicity of the recipe allows hosts to whip up batches to serve to guests. Or you, in case you just want one…that’s okay too!

The warm and spiced flavors of gingerbread cookies complement the rich and creamy taste of eggnog. The combination creates a balance of sweet, spicy, creamy notes, and the warmth of the alcohol create an incredible cocktail you will enjoy all season long. When we were in Kentucky, someone told us that bourbon gives you a warm “Kentucky hug”. And it’s totally true! It’ll make you feel warm from the inside out…just like a hug.

Gingerbread men are not only cute, but they have become a popular and iconic part of holiday traditions, especially during the Christmas season. Did you know that the tradition of making gingerbread dates back to medieval Europe?? Gingerbread was initially a spiced, honey-sweetened bread or cake that became popular during various celebrations, including holidays and festivals.

GIngerbread Eggnog Cocktail

What is eggnog?

Eggnog is a traditional seasonal drink, especially popular during the winter holidays. It is a rich and creamy beverage that typically consists of the following key ingredients:

  1. Eggs: The name “eggnog” suggests the presence of eggs, and indeed, they are a fundamental component. Raw eggs are often used, but some recipes call for cooking the mixture to reduce the risk of foodborne illness.
  2. Milk or Cream: The base of eggnog is usually milk or a combination of milk and cream. This contributes to the creamy texture of the drink.
  3. Sugar: Sweeteners, such as sugar, are added to balance the richness of the eggs and dairy and to provide a sweet taste.
  4. Spices: Ground nutmeg and cinnamon are common spices used to flavor eggnog, giving it a warm and festive aroma. Some recipes may also include vanilla or other spices.
  5. Alcohol (Optional): Traditional eggnog often includes a spirit, such as rum, brandy, whiskey, or bourbon. The alcohol not only adds flavor but also acts as a preservative. However, many recipes offer non-alcoholic versions for those who prefer it.

The preparation involves whisking together the eggs and sugar, adding the milk or cream, and incorporating the spices and alcohol if desired. Some recipes also involve heating the mixture gently on the stove, while others may require chilling before serving.

I used store-bought eggnog in this Gingerbread Cocktail recipe…sometimes it’s all about convenience 😉

GIngerbread Bourbon Eggnog Cocktail

Can you substitute milk for eggnog in this cocktail?

You can create a similar flavor and texture by combining milk with certain spices and sweeteners. The milk-based eggnog substitute won’t have the exact thickness and richness of traditional eggnog, which often contains eggs and sometimes cream. However, it captures the essence of the holiday flavors associated with eggnog.

Sweeteners and Spices to use: cinnamon, vanilla extract, sugar, ground nutmeg.

Adjust the ingredients to suit your taste preferences, and feel free to experiment with different spices and sweeteners.

You can also reduce the amount of eggnog used and add milk.

How to make a Gingerbread Bourbon Eggnog Cocktail

Can you use different alcohol to make this spiked eggnog?

Absolutely! It’s no secret that we love bourbon in my house. But one of the amazing things about cocktail recipes is that they are often flexible and can be customized to suit individual preferences. If you want to experiment with different alcohols in the Spiked Eggnog cocktail, you have various options. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Dark Rum:
    • Instead of spiced rum, try using dark rum. Dark rum brings a deeper, molasses-like flavor, which can add complexity to the cocktail.
  2. Cognac:
    • Swap bourbon for cognac, a high-quality grape brandy. Cognac tends to be smoother and more refined, offering a luxurious twist to the classic eggnog.
  3. Brandy:
    • Brandy has a rich and smooth flavor profile with subtle fruity and oaky notes. Its inherent sweetness and warmth enhance the overall taste of the eggnog. You can use brandy instead of bourbon.
  4. Irish Cream Liqueur:
    • If you enjoy the creamy aspect of the cocktail, consider using Irish cream liqueur in place of or in addition to the spirits. It will add a delightful Irish cream flavor to the mix.
  5. Hazelnut Liqueur:
    • Add a nutty and sweet dimension to the cocktail by incorporating hazelnut liqueur, such as Frangelico. It pairs well with the spiced notes of rum or bourbon.
  6. Amaretto:
    • For an almond-flavored twist, substitute spiced rum or brandy with amaretto. Amaretto’s sweet and nutty profile can complement the eggnog’s richness.

Remember to adjust the quantities based on your taste preferences and the strength of the chosen alcohol. It’s always a good idea to start with a smaller amount and add more if needed. Feel free to get creative and tailor the cocktail to your liking.

How do you store Overnight Eggs Benedict Leftovers?

You can keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. You can also freeze them for up to 3 months. My guess is that you won’t have any leftovers though 😉

Here are some other fun brunch ideas for Christmas morning or any day:

Savory Waffle Toppings

Homemade Waffles

Homemade waffles are so easy to make and they are great for feeding a crowd. You can still make them ahead of time so there is no work for you on Christmas morning and just set out a variety of toppings. Toppings might include smoked salmon with cream cheese and capers, chicken and syrup, sliced cheese, avocado, and tomato.

Waffles are great because they can be sweet or savory and if you are feeding a crowd it gives them the option to choose. Fresh fruit, whipped cream, eggs, sausage, bacon, and cheese are some other popular waffle topping options.

Zero Food Waste Frittata

Frittata

If you have eggs and Florida milk you can make a tasty frittata for breakfast! Frittatas are amazing because you can put absolutely anything in them and still wind up with a tasty meal. Leftover veggies from the fridge? Toss them right in. Leftover sausage, bacon, or ham you need to use? Throw them right in there!

Making a frittata is easy, just gather your ingredients, and saute your veggies and any meat in a skillet. Add the veggies and meats to your milk and egg mixture, pour it in a pan and bake until your eggs are set.

Candy Cane Fruit and Cream Cheese Danish

If you want to include something sweet on your Christmas breakfast table then this adorable candy cane fruit and cream cheese danish might be perfect. All you need for this cute candy cane danish is a can of crescent rolls, some cherry pie filling, cream cheese, powdered sugar, and Florida milk. You might have all of these ingredients in your holiday pantry already!

Shape your crescent roll to look like a candy cane and mix your cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla together and spread it over your crescent rolls. Top the cream cheese mixture with your pie filling and use the remaining crescent rolls for “stripes” on your candy cane. Bake until done and drizzle icing over the top while it’s still hot. This is a tasty and festive treat for breakfast or dessert around the holidays!

Have you been to Disney over Christmas? Oh, it’s quite magical! We used to always go to the Fort Wilderness campground over the holidays, but then it started getting a bit too hard to get in. But, I am excited to say that we were able to scoop up a Disney hotel this year and I am sooooo excited to see all the Disney Christmas decorations. There is so much to see and do at Disney, especially around the holidays, you didn’t need to visit the parks! We love taking the monorail around to each resort to see all the holiday decorations.

Have you been to Disney World around the holidays? What are some of your favorite things to see and do in Disney over Christmas?

What is the history of Mickey Mouse?

For almost a century, Mickey Mouse has been a cultural icon and one of the most recognizable characters in the world. As Walt Disney’s major creation, Mickey Mouse is an internationally beloved figure that has become synonymous with Disney itself. But where did the iconic mouse come from?

Before Mickey Mouse was created, Walt Disney had already achieved success as a cartoonist. He then began to work on other projects, including a film starring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit which was released in 1927. However, the distributor of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit retained the rights, prompting him to create an original character that could not be taken away from him. This character was none other than Mickey Mouse. Originally named Mortimer Mouse, Mickey first appeared in Steamboat Willie in late 1928, and quickly became a sensation with audiences all over the world.

Some quick facts about Santa Santa Claus

Also known as Saint Nicholas or Father Christmas—is a beloved and iconic figure of the holiday season. For centuries, Santa Claus has been a beloved figure in folklore and culture. He is known for bringing joy to children on Christmas Eve by delivering presents and other goodies. But where did this jolly old man originate? Here’s a look at the history of Santa Claus and how he has become such an important part of the holiday season.

Santa Claus dates back to Europe during the Middle Ages, when there was a tradition of gift-giving to poor children on St Nicholas Day; December 6th. This practice was believed to have been brought over from Asia Minor by Saint Nicholas who was said to be a generous bishop who gave out gifts. By the 17th century, his legend had spread through Europe as well as many parts of North America, with each country giving him different characteristics that were tailored specifically for their own culture.

Did you know that Santa originally wore tan clothing? It wasn’t until the late 1800s that Thomas Nast drew a modern image of Santa wearing a bright red suit. Though before red became the signature color, Nast first depicted him wearing green.

Santa is thought to live at the North Pole with his elves who help make toys for all the good boys and girls across the world!

Interestingly enough, Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of thieves. Perhaps that’s where the inspiration came from for Dr. Suess’s Grinch? We will never know!

Florida Strawberry Facts

We used Florida strawberries in our Santa Mickey Hat, but technically you could use any strawberries to achieve this adorable look.

Nothing says summer quite like a juicy, freshly picked Florida strawberry! These succulent berries are grown in the Sunshine State and harvested during the months of November through April. They’re so popular that Florida produces over 800 million pounds of strawberries each year!

When selecting fresh strawberries, look for ones that have a deep red color and no green patches. The aroma should be sweet and pleasant. It’s best to consume them within a few days after purchasing as they can spoil rapidly.

Health benefits of strawberries

Florida strawberries offer numerous health benefits too – they contain large amounts of Vitamin C, folate, antioxidants and dietary fiber. Whether you enjoy them on their own or add them to smoothies or salads, adding these tasty treats to your diet is a delicious way to boost your nutrient intake!

What makes the “ears” in this Santa Mickey Hat?

And, of course, I roasted the mushrooms in a beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon, which creates a nice synergy with the flavors in the dish. Serving this appetizer with a glass of the same red wine used in the recipe or a complementary red wine can enhance the overall dining experience. Making the wine pairing for this appetizer super easy 😉

Why we love CK Mondavi and Family Dark Cabernet Sauvignon

The Dark Cabernet Sauvignon makes a statement with dark, black fruit character and bold jammy flavors. A blend of Petite Sirah makes this wine dark purple – with notes of baking spice along with toasted oak. The finish has hints of mocha and coffee and is long and velvety. It was crafted to celebrate their 75th Anniversary with the first vintage in 2022. Once you try it, you’ll love it. I promise.

The addition of fresh herbs adds a burst of freshness and a pop of color to the dish. The herbs not only contribute to the visual appeal but also provide a contrast to the richness of the goat cheese and mushrooms.

Why roast mushrooms in red wine?

Rich Flavor Profile: The red wine roasted mushrooms add a depth of flavor to the dish. The Cabernet Sauvignon infuses the mushrooms with a complex, savory taste that complements the earthiness of the mushrooms.

Umami from Mushrooms: Mushrooms are known for their umami, the fifth basic taste that adds a savory and satisfying element to the dish. Roasting mushrooms enhances their natural flavors, making them even more delicious.

Best Red wine roasted mushroom crostini

Does it matter which mushrooms you use?

No! Use the ones you enjoy the most, I used baby bella mushrooms. You can use sliced mushrooms like I did or whole mushrooms. Just make sure they are cleaned.

Best roasted mushroom crostini

How do you roast mushrooms?

It’s easy!

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees
Spread the in a prepared baking dish, add the wine and fresh herbs.
Roast the mushrooms in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until they are tender and have a rich, roasted color.

These wine-roasted mushrooms can be served warm as a side dish, added to salads, pasta, or used as a topping for your favorite bakery bread.

Red wine roasted mushroom crostini with goat cheese

Do you have to use goat cheese on your crostini?

No, you don’t have to. My husband doesn’t like goat cheese (breaks my heart!) so sometimes I will substitute cream cheese or ricotta cheese. You can also leave off the cheese overall for a vegetarian option. Me, I just love goat cheese….and I love it on this appetizer 🙂

Red wine roasted mushroom crostini

What are the best herbs to use?

That’s up to you! I have a ton of rosemary in my garden, so I used that. I also had fresh thyme here, so I used that too. Feel free to experiment. Parsley would also be a good option.

Garlic would also be a delicious addition….Roasted garlic is DELISH.

Red wine roasted mushroom crostini with goat cheese and herbs

Why we love this Roasted Mushroom Crostini recipe

Textural Contrast: The combination of the crispy crostini, creamy goat cheese, and tender roasted mushrooms creates a delightful textural contrast. The creamy texture and tangy flavor of goat cheese add a luxurious and indulgent element to the dish. Ease of Wine Pairing: Since the dish is specifically designed to pair with red wine, the flavors are crafted to complement the characteristics of red wine, creating a synergy that elevates both the food and the wine.

Roasted mushroom crostini with goat cheese and herbs

  • Spices and Herbs: Consider the spices and herbs used in your dishes and find wines that complement or balance those flavors.

Remember that personal preferences play a significant role in wine pairings, so don’t hesitate to experiment and discover what works best for your taste buds.

When selecting wines for the holidays, consider the preferences of your guests, the menu you’ve planned, and the overall atmosphere you want to create. It’s always a good idea to have a mix of white and red wines to cater to various tastes. Additionally, don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations from knowledgeable staff at your local wine shop.

Wine Pairing Tips to Elevate Your Holiday Meals

The Perfect Calculation: Ideal Wine Bottles per Person for Your Holiday Party

The number of bottles of wine per person for a holiday party can vary based on several factors, including the duration of the event, the preferences of your guests, and whether you’re also serving other beverages.

Here are some general guidelines to help you estimate:

Calculating Standard Consumption:
On average, you can estimate that one bottle of wine provides about 4 to 6 glasses, depending on the serving size. This is a standard assumption for planning purposes.

Guest Preferences:
Consider the preferences of your guests. If you know that your group enjoys wine, you might lean towards the higher end of the estimate.

Duration of the Party:
For shorter gatherings or dinners, you might plan for approximately half a bottle of wine per person. For longer events or parties where guests may stay for several hours, you may plan for closer to one bottle per person.

Other Beverage Options:
If you’re offering a variety of beverages, including beer, cocktails, or non-alcoholic options, you may adjust the wine quantity accordingly. Some guests may prefer alternatives, so having a diverse drink selection is a good idea.

Consider the Type of Party:
The formality and nature of the party can influence wine consumption. For a casual gathering, you might plan for less wine per person compared to a formal dinner party.

Guest List:
If you know your guests well and are aware of their drinking habits, you can tailor the quantity accordingly. For example, a group of wine enthusiasts might consume more wine than a group with lighter drinkers.

Wine Variety:
Offering a mix of red and white wines can accommodate different tastes. Some guests may prefer one over the other, and having options can enhance the overall experience.

It’s always better to have a little extra than to run out, so consider having a surplus based on your estimates. Additionally, encouraging responsible drinking and providing non-alcoholic alternatives is essential for ensuring the well-being of your guests.

As you prepare for festive holiday dinners, mastering the art of wine pairings can elevate your dining experience and create unforgettable moments. With our curated tips and suggestions, you now have the tools to navigate the world of holiday wine pairings with confidence. From selecting the right varietals to understanding complementary flavors, the joy of finding the perfect wine for your holiday feast awaits. How To Plan A Bourbon Trail Trip + Maple Bourbon Milk Punch Recipe

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

Looking to plan a trip to the Bourbon Trail? Or maybe plan a bourbon themed party? Here’s some tips from our Bourbon Trail Trip and an amazing bourbon cocktail to make at home! While this bourbon cocktail recipe is sponsored by Florida Milk, my love of travel, cocktail recipes and Florida Milk are my own.

Bourbon Trail Trip

We celebrated a big milestone birthday in my house this year. The big 5-0. Not mine 😉 I will forever be 45….I’m not greedy, I don’t have to be 21 or even 31, 40s are fun! Ok, back to my hubby’s birthday….Last year around this time my husband and I started talking about what he may want to do to celebrate being 50 years young and he mentioned that doing the Bourbon Trail would be fun.

The next day, I started planning. Bourbon and the Bourbon Trail have become a lot more popular over the last few years and I knew I would be inviting about 20 people, so I knew I had to start planning sooner than later.

I guess before we get to the planning for a Bourbon Trail Trip or a 50th Birthday Party in Kentucky, I should tell ya what the Bourbon Trail actually is.

How to plan a Bourbon Trail Trip

What is the Bourbon Trail?

The Bourbon Trail is a tourist attraction and marketing initiative in Kentucky, that celebrates the rich tradition of bourbon production in the state. It is a collection of distilleries, each with its own unique history and methods of producing bourbon. The Bourbon Trail offers educational experiences that delve into the history of bourbon, the significance of the region in bourbon production, and the unique characteristics that distinguish Kentucky bourbon.

Distillery tours often conclude with tastings, allowing visitors to sample a range of bourbons produced by the distillery. This provides an opportunity to appreciate the diversity of flavors within the bourbon category.

Bourbon Trail Birthday
Lux Row

Here’s the steps I went through to plan our Bourbon Trail Trip

Send a Save The Date to everyone you want to invite. This will give you an idea of how many people are coming and let people mark their calendars and start thinking about travel plans.

Contact a travel agent. They can give you ideas on where to stay for the size of your group. Also, take into consideration budget of everyone coming. If you are expecting everyone to pay for 3 nights at a hotel, you may not want to pick a hotel that’s $400/night.

Get a block of rooms. Once you pick the hotel, call them (or ask your travel agent to) and get a block of rooms. Sometimes this will get you a discount too!

Educate yourself. Learn about the bourbon-making process and the history of the distilleries you plan to visit. This will enhance your appreciation during the tours. Encourage your guests to do the same.

Buffalo Trace Distillery Tour
Buffalo Trace

Define Your Itinerary. Talk to friends and family that like bourbon. Research the distilleries along the Bourbon Trail. Popular ones include Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam, Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace, and many others. Decide how many distilleries you want to visit and the duration of your trip. We visited Buffalo Trace, Lux Row, Willett and Heaven’s Hill. *Don’t do more than 3 or 4 in one day.

Buffalo Trace Distillery Tasting
Buffalo Trace

Plan your distillery visits. There are companies that will help you with this for a fee, I did ours on my own to save some money. Tours fill up FAST. They book up to 3 months in advance, book as soon as possible. Another important fact to note that many distilleries have a bourbon release of the day, and these sell out FAST, so plan your tour with your MUST BY being your first stop. Our first stop was Buffalo Trace. Our second stop was Lux Row….we got there at 12:30, finished our tour at 1:15 and their limited release of the day was sold out by the time we finished the tour.

Planning Bourbon Trail Trip

Transportation. Decide on your mode of transportation. If everyone is drinking, don’t drive. Use a tour companies or transportation services that cater specifically to bourbon enthusiasts. We used Pegasus and they were amazing! Bruce was our driver…highly recommend! We had a party of 17 and got the limobus that held up to 22, it was the perfect size for our group.

Stay Hydrated and Plan Responsibly. Bourbon tastings can be strong, so stay hydrated and plan responsibly. Designate a driver or consider guided tours that provide transportation.

Where to eat in Louisville
Noche Mexican BBQ

Plan local dining options. Kentucky is known for its delicious cuisine, so plan to enjoy meals at local restaurants along the way. We ate at Noche Mexican BBQ, Le Moo Steakhouse and Lou Lou on Market. And we grabbed Uber eats one night. For breakfast, we enjoyed the free meal at the hotel!

Check Events and Festivals. See if there are any bourbon-related events or festivals taking place during your visit. These can add extra excitement to your trip. We didn’t have any, but our tour guide at Lux Row told us that the Kentucky Bourbon Festival was definitely one to check out.

Things to do in Louisville

Explore the area. We did a self-guided walking tour as well as a Historic Old Louisville Walking Tour. On our self-guided tour we stopped at Old Forrester and Angel’s Envy.

Enjoy the Journey. The Bourbon Trail is not just about the destination but also the journey. Enjoy the scenic routes, explore local attractions, and immerse yourself in all things Louisville and bourbon.

What is the history of Bourbon?

The history of bourbon is deeply intertwined with the history of the United States, particularly Kentucky. Bourbon’s roots can be traced back to the whiskey-making traditions of early American settlers. Distilling skills were brought to the New World by Irish and Scottish immigrants in the 18th century.

Kentucky, with its abundant limestone-filtered water and ideal climate for aging whiskey, became a prominent region for whiskey production. The first settlers in Kentucky are believed to have started distilling corn-based spirits.

Evan Williams, often credited as Kentucky’s first commercial distiller, set up his distillery in the late 18th century in what is now Louisville. The Whiskey Rebellion of the 1790s, a protest against a federal whiskey tax, also played a role in shaping the whiskey industry.

Bourbon’s defining characteristic is its mash bill, which must be at least 51% corn. The high corn content contributes to the sweetness and richness of the final product. In the 19th century, the bourbon industry saw the rise of branded products, and some distillers started to age their whiskey in charred barrels. This aging process helped refine and mellow the spirit.

Bourbon’s popularity has grown globally, with enthusiasts appreciating its distinct flavor profile. Small-batch and craft distilleries have also contributed to the diversity of bourbon offerings.

The resurgence of interest in craft cocktails and mixology has brought bourbon into the spotlight. Bartenders and enthusiasts appreciate the versatility of bourbon in creating a wide range of cocktails, from classic Old Fashioneds to innovative concoctions like this Maple Bourbon Milk Punch.

Fine Dining Etiquette You Need to Know Before You Wine and Dine

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

Fine dining comes with a distinct set of guidelines that govern your conduct. Find out more about fine dining etiquette by learning what you need to do to be the perfect guest, what’s acceptable, and why.

Fine Dining Etiquette

Fine dining is a fabulous culinary experience that everyone needs to try. However, there is a code of behavior you need to know about before you take a seat at the table. You must learn a little about fine dining etiquette first.

Indulging in quality food and wine with people you love is one of life’s greatest pleasures. However, there’s a major difference between sharing a casual dinner al fresco on a wine farm or in a local bistro and enjoying a fine dining experience.

And we don’t just mean the food.

This fine dining etiquette also changes depending on where in the world you’re eating and drinking, so we’re going to stick to the more Westernized rules. But if you plan on traveling, don’t forget to do your research on the topic too. Table manners will never go out of fashion!

Basic Fine Dining Etiquette

What Is Fine Dining?

Fine dining typically refers to a restaurant-quality experience that is more sophisticated, expensive, and refined than your regular sit-down meal. Fine dining meals often span several courses and include carefully chosen wine pairings.

Summing it up, fine dining exudes an aura of formality, evident in both the proceedings and the manner in which the food is presented. It’s no surprise, therefore, that fine dining comes with its own set of etiquette!

Fine Dining Etiquette for Beginners

The menu stays on the table

In the world of fine dining, it’s considered poor manners to lift your menu up off the table completely as it creates a sense of disorder. At the very least, a corner of your menu should always touch the table.

However, to avoid breaking this rule, the best course of action is to leave the menu on the table in front of you, paging through it as you would a book. This maintains a sense of structure and allows the waiter to remove it without fuss.

Hold your wine glass from the stem

As many wine-tasting etiquette experts will tell you, the best way to hold a glass is by the stem. This ensures a solid grip and prevents spillage.

But most importantly, it stops any scent from your hand from compromising the flavor of the wine as 90% of taste relates to smell. Additionally, it hinders the formation of fingerprint smudges on the glass, maintaining a neat and tidy appearance.

Don’t sip from multiple wine glass angles

Another important piece of wining and dining etiquette is to only sip from one angle on your glass. This keeps your lips from smudging up the rim, keeping your wine glass looking clean and sparkling.

If you’re wearing lipstick or gloss, this rule is doubly important, as the rim will quickly get smudged and look untidy.

The rim of the plate stays clean

As you can gather by now, a lot of the etiquette focuses on maintaining a sense of order and formality.

When eating a meal at a fine dining table, you must aim to keep your food as central to the plate as possible—or as close to the arrangement that it came in as possible. This aids in maintaining a neat and clean appearance for your plate, while also minimizing the risk of food spillage over the plate’s edge.

Unwanted food goes on the upper-left part of the plate

If you aren’t able to finish all the food on your plate, that’s perfectly acceptable; fine dining etiquette covers that problem, too.

Gently relocate any undesired food or garnish to the upper-left corner of your plate. This is deemed the appropriate section for discarded food.

Never clink your glass against another

While this one can be hard to resist if it’s a particularly celebratory night, clinking your glass against another is considered poor fine dining etiquette. It can damage delicate glassware, especially if it’s crystal.

Of course, guests are allowed to simultaneously raise their glasses when a toast is being made.

Swirl your glass with finesse

Upon receiving a glass of wine poured by a waiter or host, it is considered good etiquette to elegantly swirl the wine. This demonstrates your appreciation for the viscosity and aromatics while indicating that you appreciate a fine wine.

If you don’t know your way around a glass of wine, it’s a good idea to do some research. Visit wine farms and go for tastings, join a wine of the month club, and ask sommeliers for advice when choosing a bottle or glass. This will give you confidence when fine dining and ensure you enjoy every wine pairing to its full potential.

Wine and dine in sync with others

Rushing through your meal or glass of wine is a bad idea for several reasons. One of them is that it puts you out of sync with your fellow fine diners.

The same goes for approaching your meal with extreme slowness. Rather than working through your meal at an individual pace, try to match that of the people around you so that you all finish comfortably at the same time.

Leave one bite on the plate

If a substantial amount of food remains on your plate, it might suggest a dislike for the dish, while finishing every bit could be seen as gluttonous or imply that the portion was inadequate.

Both of these extremes are to be avoided. Instead, leave one bite—the perfect amount to show you are perfectly satiated.

Never announce a trip to the restroom

If you need to use the restroom, don’t say it like it is. Instead, simply say “excuse me”, and take yourself wherever you need to be. It’s not information your fellow guests need to know!

A Valuable Lesson

Acquiring the art of fine dining etiquette is a valuable skill applicable in various aspects of life. This proficiency enables you to savor each fine dining encounter to its utmost, comprehending the associated expectations. Additionally, it enhances your appeal as a dinner companion!

Etiquette for fine dining

By adopting these highly revered fine dining habits, you can wine and dine in style, safe in the knowledge that your behavior is exactly what’s expected.

Where is your favorite spot for fine dining? Did you know there was a fine dining etiquette?

Pummelo Gin Fizz Cocktail

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

Looking for a simple, yet refreshing cocktail to enjoy this fall? This Pummelo Gin Fizz is a citrusy twist on a traditional Gin Fizz. While this post is sponsored by Noble Citrus, all opinions and my love of Florida agriculture and pummelos are my own.

Pummelo Gin Fizz

It’s Florida Starburst Pummelo Season and what better way to celebrate than with this sexy Pummelo Gin Fizz cocktail?

So, what exactly is a pummelo?

Well, I’ve been chatting about them for a few years with you all, so hopefully you remember that they are the BIGGEST, MOST AMAZING FLORIDA CITRUS. Noble Citrus here in Winter Haven has rows and rows of citrus trees that grow the Florida Starburst Pummelo. They are then hand-picked and shipped to your local grocer so that you can enjoy them from October to January. The Florida Starburst Pummelo may remind you of a grapefruit, but it is larger, juicier, sweeter and they are actually less acidic than grapefruit.

How to make A Pummelo Gin Fizz

Alright, so what is a gin fizz cocktail?

A Gin Fizz is a classic cocktail that’s both refreshing and slightly tart, featuring gin as the primary spirit. It’s known for its frothy and effervescent texture, achieved by vigorously shaking the ingredients with ice and topping the drink with carbonated water (soda water or club soda).

Here’s a basic recipe for a Gin Fizz:

Ingredients:

2 oz (60 ml) gin
3/4 oz (22 ml) fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz (15 ml) simple syrup (equal parts water and sugar)
1 egg white (optional, for frothiness)
Soda water (club soda) to top
Ice
Lemon twist or slice, for garnish

Instructions:

  • In a cocktail shaker, combine the gin, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and, if desired, the egg white.
  • Add a handful of ice to the shaker, and shake vigorously for about 10-15 seconds. This not only chills the cocktail but also creates frothiness from the egg white.
  • Strain the mixture into a highball or Collins glass filled with ice.
  • Top off the glass with soda water, leaving about an inch of space at the top.
  • Give it a gentle stir to combine the ingredients.
  • Garnish with a lemon twist or slice.

The egg white is an optional ingredient that gives the Gin Fizz its characteristic frothy head. If you choose to use it, make sure to shake the cocktail thoroughly to create the foam. If you prefer a vegan or egg-free version, you can omit the egg white; the drink will still taste delicious but won’t have as much foam.

Grapefruit Gin Fizz

So, why make a Pummelo Gin Fizz?

Well, the Pummelo Gin Fizz is a variation of the classic Gin Fizz cocktail that incorporates pummelo simple syrup juice for a citrusy twist. I didn’t do the egg white in my recipe, adding egg white just wasn’t up my alley.

The combination of gin’s botanicals, pummelo’s mild tartness, and the effervescence of soda water creates a refreshing and flavorful cocktail.

Best Pummelo Gin Fizz

Why add rosemary to your Pummelo Gin Fizz

Honestly, I did it because it’s growing like crazy in my garden and it’s pretty!  But, adding rosemary to a Pummelo Gin Fizz is an easy way to enhance the flavor profile and aroma of the drink. Rosemary is a fragrant and aromatic herb with earthy and pine-like notes that can complement the citrusy and botanical qualities of the cocktail.

To incorporate rosemary into a Pummelo Gin Fizz cocktail, follow these steps:

  • Muddle a small sprig of fresh rosemary in the bottom of the glass or shaker to release its aromatic oils.
  • Proceed with the standard Pummelo Gin Fizz recipe, which typically includes gin, pummelo simple syrup, and soda water or sparkling water.
  • Garnish the finished cocktail with an additional sprig of fresh rosemary for both aroma and visual appeal.

Keep in mind that the intensity of the rosemary flavor can vary depending on how much you muddle and how long you let it infuse in the cocktail. You can adjust the amount of rosemary to suit your taste preferences, from a subtle hint of aroma to a more pronounced herbal flavor.

Want to experiment with pummelo cocktails and that pummelo simple syrup? I got you!

To make pummelo simple syrup, follow this recipe add in the rind of the pummelo to the pot and then remove it once you remove the pot from the heat.

Pummelo, with its sweet and mildly tart flavor, pairs well with a variety of alcoholic beverages, particularly in cocktails.

Tasty Pummelo Gin Fizz

Here are some alcoholic options that complement the flavor of pummelo:

Vodka: Vodka’s neutral flavor allows the pummelo’s natural sweetness and citrus notes to shine. You can create a refreshing pummelo vodka cocktail with pummelo juice, vodka, and a splash of soda or tonic water.

Gin: Gin’s botanicals, including juniper and various herbs and spices, can enhance the citrusy profile of pummelo. A pummelo gin and tonic or a pummelo Collins (similar to a Tom Collins) are excellent choices.

Rum: Light rum or white rum can provide a tropical and fruity backdrop for pummelo. Consider mixing pummelo juice with rum, a bit of lime juice, and a touch of simple syrup for a delightful cocktail.

Tequila: Tequila, especially silver or blanco tequila, pairs nicely with pummelo’s citrus notes. A pummelo margarita or a pummelo Paloma (with grapefruit soda) can be delicious options.

Prosecco or Champagne: Pummelo juice can be used to create a citrusy and bubbly brunch cocktail when mixed with Prosecco or Champagne. Add a splash of orange liqueur for extra complexity.

Sake: For a unique twist, you can mix pummelo juice with sake. This combination can result in a refreshing and slightly exotic drink.

Beer: Light, crisp beers, such as lagers or wheat beers, can be a good match for pummelo. You can create beer cocktails by adding pummelo juice and a splash of soda to beer.

Cointreau or Triple Sec: These orange liqueurs can enhance the citrusy flavors of pummelo-based cocktails. They work well in drinks like a pummelo sidecar or a pummelo martini.

Whiskey: While whiskey is less commonly paired with pummelo, the combination of a citrusy pummelo twist and a mild whiskey, such as bourbon, can be surprisingly enjoyable. Try it in a pummelo whiskey sour.

Remember to balance the sweetness and acidity of pummelo with the alcohol and other ingredients in your cocktails. You can also experiment with herbs, spices, and other flavor enhancers to create unique and customized pummelo-based drinks that suit your taste preferences.

Looking for a comforting fall dinner idea that is ready in under 30 minutes? Make this Pumpkin Mac N Cheese, plus you will only dirty one pot! While this post is sponsored by Florida Milk, my love of healthy and snack recipes and Florida Milk are my own.

Pumpkin Mac N Cheese

Fall is here and that means it’s time to break out all of your favorite fall recipes. The colder months of the year are the perfect time for warm and hearty casseroles, soups, and stews. Fall is also the perfect time for all things pumpkin! Yes, I know I live in Florida and it doesn’t get all that much cooler, but that doesn’t mean we don’t like to jump on the All Things Pumpkin train!

Not only are pumpkins delicious, they are also really good for you. Did you know that pumpkins are actually a fruit and not a vegetable? Pumpkins are a fruit and they are packed with beta carotene, vitamin C, potassium, and iron.

During the fall season, you can find pumpkin spice coffee, cookies, ice cream, hummus, cereal, marshmallows, and more. This recipe isn’t pumpkin pie spiced, but it does use pumpkin as an ingredient. I actually cook with pumpkin all year long due to it’s many health benefits…you can add a can of pumpkin puree to homemade soup (any kind!) and you can’t taste it, but you are getting all those nutrients. Score!

I have seen pumpkin mac n cheese all over social media and I was soooooo excited when Florida Milk challenged me to make it.

This recipe for Pumpkin macaroni and cheese is a simple one-pot meal. You can have it on the table in just about 30 minutes so it’s perfect for any night of the week. It is a hearty and comforting dish perfect for a cool fall evening.

The pumpkin flavor in pumpkin macaroni and cheese is not overwhelming, in fact, it just gives the dish a subtly sweet flavor that pairs perfectly with the homemade cheese sauce. Don’t worry homemade cheese sauce is not hard to make, and once you have made it and tasted it, you will always want to make it from scratch!

So what do you need to make pumpkin macaroni and cheese? Don’t worry, you probably already have most of the ingredients in your pantry!

One Pot Pumpkin Mac N Cheese

Pumpkin Macaroni and Cheese Ingredients

Milk –  You will need milk to make your cheese sauce from scratch. Be sure to use Florida Milk, of course 😉 Not sure if you are buying Florida Milk, here’s how to know: Look for the number 12 on the series on numbers on your milk jug.

Cheese – You are going to need some shredded sharp cheddar cheese for your homemade cheese sauce. You can also add gouda, gruyere, or parmesan cheese to your cheese sauce if you would like to. If possible shred your own cheese, and the sauce will turn out much creamier and smoother. Store-bought shredded cheese has potato powder in it and the end result is not as good.

Butter –  You need butter to work as your fat content to make your homemade cheese sauce. To make bechamel, which is just a fancy name for cheese sauce, you need equal parts of fat (butter) and flour.

Pasta – You’ve got to have pasta to make pumpkin macaroni and cheese, but you don’t have to use elbows if you don’t want to. Some alternatives are shells, fusilli, cavatappi, rotini, or penne. I found those cute little pumpkin shells at Trader Joe’s for under $3.

Pumpkin Puree – You will need a can of pumpkin puree to make this amazing pumpkin macaroni and cheese. You can also use roasted pumpkin or butternut squash in place of the canned pumpkin puree if you have it on hand.

Pumpkin Mac and Cheese

Pumpkin Macaroni and Cheese Variations

You can make this pumpkin macaroni and cheese your own with a few simple variations, here are a few ideas:

  • Cooked chopped bacon would go great in this dish.
  • You could also add caramelized onions to take the flavor up a notch.
  • Top your pumpkin macaroni and cheese with Panko bread crumbs and toss it in the oven for a few minutes to brown them up.
  • Add some diced green onions.
  • You can also add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or clove to the pumpkin puree if you want to give this dish a pumpkin spice flavor.
  • Like it spicy? Add extra red pepper flakes, top with hot sauce or add in some diced jalapenos when you are sauteing the onion and garlic.

This pumpkin macaroni and cheese is a flavorful fall dish that people may be surprised at how much they love. The pumpkin puree flavor is very subtle.

You can serve this hearty dish as a main meal or as a side dish with a main course, veggies, or a salad. Don’t forget the Florida Milk!

This would be an amazing dish to bring to a potluck or you could serve it as a side dish for Thanksgiving dinner.

Easy Pumpkin Macaroni and Cheese

Can you make Pumpkin Mac n Cheese ahead of time?

You might be wondering if you can make this dish ahead of time, and while it is delicious fresh and hot you can certainly make it ahead of time if you need to. You can store it in the refrigerator for up to five days and then heat it in the oven when you are ready to serve it.

Equipment

  • 1 Large pot or dutch oven

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp salted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/4 cup sweet onion diced
  • 3 springs fresh thyme
  • 8 leaves fresh sage
  • 1 pound pasta
  • 3 1/2 cups water
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese – I used a cheddar mix
  • 1 cup shredded creamy gouda cheese
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • Kosher salt and black pepper

Instructions

  • Melt the butter with the garlic, diced onion, thyme, and sage in a large pot set over medium heat. Saute for about 2-4 minutes, until the garlic is fragrant.
  • Remove the sage leaves and set aside.
  • Add the uncooked pasta to the pot and stir well so that the pasta gets covered with the butter.
  • Add 3 1/2 cups of water and bring to a boil over high heat.
  • Add pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for approx. 8 minutes. Do not drain the water.
  • Stir in the milk, cream cheese, and pumpkin, and cook until the pasta is al dente, about 4-5 minutes.
  • Add shredded cheese, paprika, red pepper flakes, and stir until melted and creamy. Remove from the heat.
  • Season with salt and pepper.
  • Top with black pepper and the reserved sage if desired.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

Notes: If the sauce feels thick, add a little milk or water to thin. If you have too much sauce, make additional pasta and stir it in.

Nutrition Tips for Women in Their 40s

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

If you are 40 or over, it’s no surprise to you that your body is changing. Inside and outside. Our needs change. Here are some nutrition tips for women over 40. While this post is sponsored by Naked Nutrition, all opinions and my desire for aging gracefully are 100% my own.

Nutrition Tips For Women

Women are like fine wine and just get better as we age, however, as we age the needs of our bodies change a bit. This is particularly true when it comes to nutrition. Nutrition is more important than ever for women in their 40s. Let’s talk about the nutritional needs of women in their 40s and beyond.

Starting in our 40s women lose approximately 8% of their muscle each decade, but you can minimize this with a great workout routine and good nutrition. Including plenty of protein in your diet and strength training exercises can help you build and preserve your muscle mass instead of losing it.

If you haven’t gotten serious about your diet and nutritional needs before now, your 40s is the time to start. The healthy choices you make now in your 40s can prevent diseases and health problems as you get older.  A healthy diet should include protein (more on that in a minute), lots of healthy fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and carbohydrates from whole grains.

In your 40’s your estrogen levels begin to decrease and so do your thyroid levels. As a result, you may find that you feel hungrier so it’s important to eat healthy foods filled with fiber and protein to give you energy and keep you full. Your metabolism can slow down at this age causing you to gain weight, but you can give it a boost by drinking ice water, eating spicy foods, exercising, eating breakfast every day, and getting plenty of sleep.

I am also trying a Thermogenic Fat Burner from Naked Nutrition called Naked Burn. Naked Burn combines natural ingredients backed by multiple gold-standard clinical trials to increase heat in your body and burn up to 15% more calories at rest. I will be honest, I’m excited to give it a try! I’ll keep you all posted 🙂

Nutrition Tips For Women over 40

Protein Shakes

We’ve already talked about the importance of getting plenty of protein in your diet to prevent a loss of muscle mass. Protein also helps to give you the energy you need to get through your busy days.

Protein shakes are a handy way to get the protein you need even on your busiest days. You can quickly make a smoothie and add protein powder, or pop one of your favorite protein shakes in your purse and take it on the go with you. With protein shakes, there is absolutely no excuse for skipping meals. Protein shakes are perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a filling snack.

You all know how much I love protein smoothies and shakes…they are the easiest way to start your day with a healthy dose of fruits, veggies and protein! That’s a win-win-win in my book.

Nutrition Tips For Women in their 40s

Collagen

Collagen is the most abundant protein found in the human body, but as we age our natural collagen production begins to slow down. This slowed production becomes more visible in our 40’s with sagging skin, wrinkles, fine lines, and less elasticity. Don’t fret though because there is something you can do about this part of the aging process.

You can start taking collagen at any age, but if you haven’t started taking it before turning 40, now is the time. Collagen is very important for the health of your skin and your bones, and it is easy to add to your diet. Collagen peptides, which are collagen that has already been broken down so that it’s easier for your body to absorb and use.

Collagen comes in many different forms including powder, pills, and liquid and it is considered a dietary supplement. This makes it very easy to include in your diet. You can just pop a pill in the morning with your coffee, or add the powder or liquid to a smoothie or drink. You won’t notice a difference when taking collagen immediately but you will see the improvement in your skin over time. Taking collagen daily will leave your skin more hydrated, and looking and feeling younger.

Gut Health

Gut health is a term that you hear thrown around a lot these days, and having a healthy gut is important, but what is a healthy gut and how do you get one in your 40s and beyond? Your digestive system is filled with trillions of bacteria, which while it sounds icky, is actually a good thing.

As you age your digestive system slows down and becomes a little less efficient, and the secretions in your stomach and intestines decrease. All of these things can lead to a gut that isn’t so healthy which can cause you to gain weight, feel bloated, and just sluggish overall.

Not to worry though because you can improve your gut health at any age by making a few simple changes to your diet. Probiotics are live organisms that improve the health and efficiency of your gut. You can take them as a supplement and they are also found in fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, and kombucha.

In addition to adding a probiotic supplement or probiotic foods to your diet, there are a few other things that you can do to improve the health of your gut no matter how old you are. These include drinking more water, exercising daily, getting quality sleep at night, and adding some avocados to your diet. This one might sound strange, but studies have shown that eating avocados diversifies your gut bacteria. The more diverse your gut bacteria is the healthier your gut is overall.

Increasing your protein intake and adding collagen and probiotics or fermented foods to your diet are all simple steps that you can take to improve your health in your 40s and beyond. It is NEVER too late to start improving your health and your future (younger-looking) self will thank you!
