Summer Fitness Motivation Tips

Fun Ways To Exercise This Summer and Beyond

Are you guilty of the Summer Slump?  I know you have been waiting months for the weather to get warm and beautiful outside so that you could get back into your regular workout routine.  Running outside, no more being worried about being cold and freezing when you step out of the car, enjoying the fresh air!

It’s great, right?

So great that you are outside gardening, swimming, playing with the kids, getting all those errands done, driving around with the windows down, getting the kids to summer camps, making meals with new fresh ingredients…so you are searching on Pinterest, cleaning the windows, cleaning out the car, oh the list goes on and on.

But where is the working out that you were looking forward to doing?

Yes, gardening, cutting the grass, and walking outdoors are all fabulous, but they don’t give you the cardio and strength training that you need!

Summer Fitness Motivation

I cut the grass last weekend and planted a TON of flowers, so I know you are sitting there going I worked my BUM off last weekend, that HAS to count as a workout!  And, yes, it is some burning calories, but you aren’t getting it all in.  You need the cardio, the heart-pumping aerobics, the repetition of the weights, you need to stick to your workout routine.

Staying motivated to exercise

Your routine is your routine.  I love to Run and go to Jazzercise.  Jazzercise totally compliments my running by giving me a full body workout and helping me build stamina for my long distance runs.

Losing weight and exercising is a big step towards getting healthy, looking better, and feeling sexy. If diet and exercise really get you down, start adding some fun ideas to your regiment. Weight loss can be fun!

Here are some healthy living tips you can try at home to up your exercise and eating healthy game:

Push-Ups

Push-Ups work many muscles and can be done anywhere. Work your way up to doing 100 consecutive push-ups if you can.

Smaller Plates

Do you have a stack of salad plates in the cupboard that rarely get used? Start using them as your entrée plates. The less you have on your plate, the less you will eat. Even if you go back for seconds, you’ll end up eating less than if you piled up the food on one of your giant plates.

Surround Yourself with Blue

Studies have shown that the color blue tends to suppress appetite. Research has also shown that vibrant colors like red and orange stimulate the appetite. And what are McDonald’s’ main colors? So wear blue and eat off blue plates if you have them. Avoid those vibrant colors that will only serve to increase your appetite.

Play Twister

This is a fun and easy way to improve your flexibility and strength. Think of it as a fun and bizarre way to practice new and strange pilates and yoga poses.

Hula-Hoop

Challenge your partner, roommate, or friends. See who can hula the longest. This is a low-intensity way to exercise more. It’s fun, easy, and entertaining. Do it during commercials or whenever the mood strikes you. If you don’t have one already, hula-hoops only cost a couple of dollars at most places that sell toys.

Skip the Movie and Dinner

Instead of eating buttered popcorn and sucking down a soda before a high-calorie dinner at a restaurant, consider a more creative date. Go for a hike and a picnic. Be entertained by nature and truly enjoy the company. Bring your own picnic lunch, and not only will you be saving and burning calories – but you’ll also be saving money.

Grow a Garden

By growing (and eating) your own vegetables, you’ll be getting good exercise and improving your diet. You’re more likely to eat vegetables if you just have to step into the back yard to buy them. This is a great way to squeeze in more exercise, eat healthier, and save money.  We have eggplant growing right now in our garden.

Get Rid of Your Office Chair

And replace it with a stability ball. You may get strange looks at first, but be confident in your reasons for getting rid of the office chair. Right away, you’ll notice your posture improves. And by sitting on a stability ball, you’ll burn lots more calories than you were in the old office chair. You’ll be surprised how quickly this can catch on with your co-workers.

Chore Races

Cleaning up the house is no fun. Make it more fun by racing. You can race yourself by setting a timer or stop-watch, or you can race your partner to see who can get his chore done first. By adding the element of speed, your body will be moving quickly, and you’ll inadvertently be getting exercise while getting the house picked up. What a fun way to multi-task!

More Steps Every Day

Strap on a pedometer (or turn on the steps counter on your phone) and try to do more steps every day. By creating this simple challenge, you’ll start moving more – which is the key to losing weight. Just like chore races, you can challenge yourself by beating your previous steps, or you can challenge a friend or co-worker to see who can get the most steps each day. Either way, make it fun and get moving!

The key to losing weight is eating less and moving more. Get creative, and you’ll be successful. It doesn’t have to be difficult and daunting. Use these creative and unique ways to lose more weight.

If you are looking for more simple exercises you can do at home, grab this free exercise printable and toss it on your refrigerator as a reminder.

Find the routine that you enjoy, that you will do, that you will CONTINUE to do.  That’s what will make it a routine.

I hope these Summer Fitness Motivation Tips help you this Summer and beyond!

This Garlic Honey Chicken Recipe is easy to make and can be made tonight for dinner or added to your meal plan as a freezer to slow cooker meal.  This Garlic Honey Chicken easy recipe is a family favorite of ours.

Garlic Honey Chicken

Garlic Honey Chicken

Freezer to Crockpot Meal

A few weeks ago I stocked up my chicken, so my neighbor and I were on a mission to make some delicious freezer to crockpot meals.  This Garlic Honey Chicken was the first one my family tried and my son said “Mom, I think this is your best chicken recipe yet!”  I love it when I get praise like that 🙂

Slow Cooker Garlic Honey Chicken

I love garlic and I love honey, so in my mind this recipe was going to be fabulous!  The garlic is not over-powering at all, and the honey adds a bit of sweetness.  As you can see, I served mine on a bed of beautifully sauteed veggies.  My kids skipped out of the zucchini and squash and opted for rice 😉

Now, here is my Garlic Honey Chicken Crockpot recipe.  You don’t HAVE to make it as a freezer to crockpot meal, if you decide to not do it that way, just place all the ingredients into the crockpot and cook it for the specified time.

Make sure to Print this Slow Cooker Garlic Honey Chicken and Pin It so that you can make it again and again.

Smoothies are a healthy and easy way to start your day. This Avocado Mango Smoothie recipe has a blend of superfoods and vitamins that your healthy lifestyle needs!
Avocado Mango Smoothie

Avocado Mango Smoothie

I know what you are thinking.  I said I made an Avocado Mango Smoothie and there isn’t mango pictured above.  Well, it is below 😉  I have yet to master the art of cutting a mango and making it look pretty.  I am sure there is a technique of some sort, maybe one day I’ll google it…until then, you all have to deal with my butchered mango.   I have decided that it still tastes good even if I don’t cut it pretty 🙂

Healthy Avocado Mango Smoothie

Have you ever considered drinking the main ingredient to guacamole?  I am well aware that avocado is filled with all the “good fats” that our body needs, but I will admit that drinking it sounded a bit off.  But, then again if you would have asked me 6 months ago if I would be using a blender to make smoothies with any kind of vegetables I would have told you were crazy….now I do it daily!  So, I figured why not give it a whirl.  And I was pleasantly surprised!  I hope you are too 🙂

Now, here is my Avocado Mango Protein Shake (with coconut water) Recipe, be sure to Print It and Pin It so that you can make it again and again.

Picnic Essentials

Picnic Essentials Checklist

School is out (or almost out if you aren’t yet!) and Summer is here!  That means Summer FUN!  For us, that means spending time outside, enjoying the weather, and playing with our friends.  We love planning picnics.  They are the perfect way to plan for a day of fun…all day!  Just pack your essentials and you will be prepared for hours of fun 🙂

Here are the items on my Picnic Essentials Checklist:

Picnic Essentials

Blanket/Sheet

It should be large enough to hold all your picnic-goers and food. I recommend one that folds up easily, is easy to clean, and being waterproof is a bonus. You will see the OneStepAhead Beach Blanket pictured throughout this post…because we LOVE it! We love that it is waterproof (the kids thoroughly tested this out by spilling water on it over and over and loved watching it bead up), soft, and is reversible! We can have cool stripes or brown. It also folds up easily into it’s compact tote. If you spend a lot of time on the beach, you HAVE to check out this Sand-Away Beach Sheet, it is super lightweight and it actually repels SAND!

Picnic Essentials

Cooler

You need something to bring all your goodies in! I suggest an easy to carry cooler bag.

Picnic Essentials

Food, Snacks and Drinks!

Picnic Items

What is a picnic without the food and drink? Be sure to pack casual foods like sandwiches, bagels, Crunch Pak Apples, carrots, etc.

Picnic Essentials

You will want items that you can eat without utensils and be sure to pack in reusable bags (less waste!).  I like the Bumkins Snack bags from OneStepAhead, they are cute and great for snacks and even your sunglasses and keys!  They are also machine washable 🙂

Picnic Packing Essentials

Ice/Ice packs

Be sure there is a way to keep the cool items cool. If you don’t have an ice pack, freeze a bottle water or two! And when they start to defrost, you can drink them 🙂

Utensils if needed and napkins

Picnic Items

Be sure to Cleanup

Don’t leave a mess behind!

Picnic Essentials

Towels if needed

If you plan on sending some time in the water, grab a towel or two to bring along. This Fast Dry Hooded Towel is a perfect option because it is REALLY lightweight, so lightweight you won’t even believe it’s a towel! It folds up small and is perfect for on-the-go and travel.

Picnic Essentials

Most importantly, Enjoy your Day!

Seeing smiles on everyone’s faces is the best feeling ever, isn’t it?

Blueberry Carrot Smoothie

This Carrot Blueberry Smoothie with Greens is an easy way to pack more fruits and vegetables into your day. Healthy carrot blueberry smoothie made with strawberries and leafy greens

Why You’ll Love This Carrot Blueberry Smoothie

One of the things I love most about this carrot blueberry smoothie is how balanced it feels. You’re getting natural sweetness from fruit, but also a solid serving of vegetables… which helps keep the sugar content lower than many fruit-heavy smoothies.

Carrots add a mild sweetness and blend surprisingly well with berries, while blueberries and strawberries bring that classic smoothie flavor everyone loves. When you add leafy greens into the mix, you’re boosting vitamins and minerals without overpowering the taste. It’s a great option if you’re trying to sneak more vegetables into your day (or into your kids’ diets) without complaints. Check out these smoothies with greens too!

This smoothie works well as a quick breakfast, a post-workout drink, or even an afternoon snack when you need something refreshing but nourishing.

  • Packed with fruits and vegetables in one easy drink
  • Naturally sweet with no added sugar
  • A great way to use up extra greens
  • Quick to make in under 5 minutes
  • Easy to customize with your favorite protein or liquid

This smoothie is filled with carrots, strawberries, a bunch of blueberries, and greens.  I use coconut water in most of my smoothies, but you can use regular tab water or none at all!  I heard somewhere that ideally you will have as many, if not more, vegetables than fruit in your smoothie.  It gives you more vitamins and not as many sugars.  That made sense to me, so I have been sticking to that rule 🙂

Best Blueberry Carrot Smoothie

Here are some of the health benefits to the ingredients in this Blueberry Carrot smoothie recipe:

Blueberries – These beautiful berries will also give your body an antioxidant boost.  Blueberries are actually considered the king of antioxidants.

Carrots – The orange powerfood will give you vitamin A and is also linked to preventing cancer, giving you healthier looking skin and aids in digestion.

Strawberries – These red beauties are loaded with vitamins, fiber, and potassium.  As an added benefit – they are fat-free 🙂

Protein Powder – Helps keep you full longer and makes your smoothie extra creamy.

Best Greens to Use in Smoothies

One of the things I love most about smoothies is how flexible they are. When it comes to greens, you really can’t go wrong. I typically use whatever I have on hand, including:

  • Spinach or baby spinach blends
  • Spring mix
  • Baby kale
  • Mixed baby lettuce

These greens blend easily, don’t overpower the flavor, and pair perfectly with the sweetness of blueberries and strawberries.

Here is my Carrot Blueberry Smoothie Recipe, be sure to Print It and Pin It so that you can make it again and again.

Citrus Marinade Grilled Swordfish Recipe

This Citrus Marinade is light and full of flavorful.  Be adventurous and grab some swordfish and make this delicious Grilled Swordfish with Citrus Marinade for dinner!
How to Grill Swordfish

Citrus Marinade Grilled Swordfish Recipe

I had some amazing Swordfish from Anderson Seafoods that was calling my name this past weekend, and since my grill is now ready for use – I decided it was the perfect time to get grilling!  So, I got a little creative and made this Citrus Marinade Grilled Swordfish.  The grill isn’t just for burgers and steaks 😉

Best Citrus Marinade for Grilled Swordfish

I wanted to do a light Citrus Marinade, so I got all the delicious flavors of citrus ready.  If you are not a Tequila fan or don’t have any in the house – you can easily leave it out.  It does NOT leave a strong flavor of Tequila, it just works well with the citrus.

Easy Citrus Marinade

Once you have all your citrus marinade ingredients mixed well, you just pour them into a ziploc bag and add in your Swordfish.  I let mine marinate for about 5 hours, but you could easily do longer.

Best Grilled Swordfish

This citrus marinade would also be fabulous on other fish!

How To Grill The Perfect Steak

We can now officially get to our grill!  Can I get a WOOHOO!!??  As soon as my husband said that it was up and running I went to the grocery store and grabbed some steaks.  What better way to celebrate the grill working than with steaks?

Marinading steaks

And what goes better with steaks than Stubb’s?

Grilling steaks perfectly

I got home from the store, poked a few holes in each side of the steaks and tossed them in a ziploc bag with about a half of a bottle of Stubb’s Beef Marinade. Just make sure there is enough liquid to cover the meat. The marinade is a blend of soy, garlic, and red pepper. So, it is a little salty with a bit of heat. It will make beef or any other meat come out tender, delicious and made right.

I let the steaks marinade for about 4 – 5 hours. Once I was ready to start dinner, I warmed up the grill to about 400 degrees and I tossed those beautiful steaks on!

Deliciously grilled steaks

I cooked them for about 6-7 mins per side. Make sure to cook them to your liking 🙂

Grilled steak and vegetables

As you can see, I also cut up some zucchini and squash – seasoned them with a little Olive Oil and Mrs. Dash Original Seasoning and I tossed those on the grill too. Talk about the perfect meal!

So, my secret to a perfectly grilled steak isn’t all that complicated, all you need is steak, a grill, and Stubb’s BAR-B-Q Beef Marinade!  I’m serious – the flavor of the marinade is AMAZING!

Perfectly cooked steaks

Where do you get Stubb’s?  You’re favorite retailer of course!  Did you know that Craft-made Stubb’s is the only nationally available BBQ sauce brand (available in 85% grocery stores) to carry the Gluten-Free Organization Certification seal and contain no high fructose corn syrup (the first ingredient in most national BBQ sauce brands.)?!  Pretty awesome, huh?  The company is also working with the Non-GMO Project to verify its line.

I used a coupon that I got for free from the company to grab the marinade my fabulous steaks.
