Does your family love to cook? Would you like to get everyone involved in the kitchen more? Use these Family Cooking Competition Ideas to get the family more involved in the kitchen.

Family Cooking Competition

Family Cooking Competition Ideas

One of the best ways to bond with children is with food. Spend some time together in the kitchen, whipping up some easy, tasty recipes.

It’s never too early to get the children actively involved in cooking. Bring the whole family into the kitchen and start preparing foods everyone will enjoy. If they’re involved in cooking healthy meals, the kids might even try things they might not otherwise.

We have all probably seen one (or 20) of the cooking challenge shows on TV, which cooking show is your favorite? My daughter loves Baking Championships on Food Network and my son is partial to Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.  There are quite a few cooking shows where the kids are the chefs, so why not incorporate the kids (and everyone!) in the kitchen more with these family cooking competition ideas.

Doesn’t a family cooking competition sound like a fun way to make dinner?  You can save money from not eating out and enjoy a bit of quality time together. Plus, it gives everyone something to do!

Family Cooking Competition Ideas

Kids are often very willing helpers in the kitchen and these family cooking competition ideas are a fun way to help them polish their cooking skills while the family spends time together.

Here are some Family Cooking Competition Ideas so you can host your own Cooking Challenge at Home:

First, you need to pick the cooking challenge.

  • You can plan on picking a theme in advance so that any items a family member may need for a recipe can be picked up from the store or farmers market.
  • You can make it additionally challenging by only using items you currently have in your pantry, fridge, and freezer right now.
  • You can pick a theme, like Tex-Mex night, Burgers, or an Italian Cuisine Night.
  • You can add in a secret ingredient that no one was prepared for.
  • You will have to decide on teams, depending on the size of your family, you may do teams of one or two (or three!).

If you have younger children suggest simple foods that they can make such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cereal with fruit, or a trail mix they can put together with nuts, candy, and raisins.  Adults, make sure you assist with any cutting or using knives as needed.

Next, set a time limit for the cooking challenge.

  • This time limit will include the time needed to make the dish as well as plate it.  I recommend keeping the time to an hour or less so that no one is spending all day preparing.

Finally, there must be judging.

Once the dishes are plated, everyone can taste test and give their opinion on the meals.  You can write results on a piece of paper and fold it up so no one sees.  Or you can have one family member not participate so that they aren’t partial to their own dish.

Prizes!

Everyone likes to win something.  Have a small prize ready for the winner. This can be a $5 gift card, a candy bar, a night off from doing the dishes or a small stuffed animal.

Cooking Competition Ideas For Families

You can also use these Family Cooking Competition Ideas to do a multi-family cooking challenge. Invite two or three other families over and have each family prepare one dish. Make sure that you set a spending limit on the dish though so that no one family is going overboard.

Need a recipe idea? Here are three nutritious recipe ideas that are easiest enough for the kids to make on their own.

Easy Handprint Animals Craft

This Easy Handprint Animals Craft is fun for kids of all ages. Use my edible finger paint recipe or buy some finger paints at the store and see what the kids will create.

Handprint Animals

Easy Handprint Animals Craft

Whether it is too cold, too hot, or simply raining outside, sometimes we need an engaging activity to keep the kids entertained indoors. If you are looking for a way to keep your kids busy inside then this may be just the easy art project for you.

Let your kids use their handprints to make animals! You can let your kids use their imaginations to create animals or you can make the project a little more focused. A quick online search will reveal all of the animal possibilities you could ever want. From butterflies to crabs, to fish and peacocks the possibilities are endless and so is the fun and creativity!

All you need for this activity is some white paper, paints, and maybe some newspaper or a cheap plastic tablecloth to cover the table with. You can use any type of craft paint that you have on hand for this activity, and if you don’t have any paint on hand you can use the edible finger paint recipe below to make your own.

Easy Handprint Animals Kids Craft

As a bonus activity to keep your kids busy while the paintings dry have your kids tell you a story about their painting. If they are old enough they can write it out, or if your kids are younger you can write it down for them. Write it on an index card you can attach to the back of the painting and you will have a keepsake of your kids art adventure.

Here are a few of the handprint animals my kids did back when they were little (they are now 15 and 12!).

Steven made a Wolf and a Crab at a birthday party…and Sadie made a bunny and a heart.

Easy Handprint Animals Craft

You would be surprised how easy it is to do and how much they can actually do on their own. And now we have some fun new refrigerator art!

Handprint Animals Kids Craft

The other good part about this easy kids craft is that it’s very inexpensive.

This recipe for paint is super simple and only uses items that you have already have in your pantry. As a bonus, it is also edible so there are no worries if you are working with younger children who like to give everything a taste.

Remember that you can use this paint for other craft projects as well. This paint recipe should work just fine on canvas, toilet paper rolls, or even as window paint that washes off easily.

Here is the recipe for homemade edible finger paints:

Tips For Visiting LEGOLAND Florida

The whole family will have fun at LEGOLAND Florida Resort! From the rides to the shopping, there is something for everyone to enjoy. While this post is sponsored, all opinions are 100% my own.

Tips For Visiting LEGOLAND Florida

Tips For Visiting LEGOLAND Florida

This past weekend my family and I went to LEGOLAND in Winter Haven, Florida and had a fabulous family FUN day.  We were very fortunate to receive the tickets for review.

Do you have a LEGO-lover at home? Someone that loves to build? Loves to learn? Do you love to watch your child’s eyes light up with excitement and amazement? Do you enjoy being outdoors? If you answered YES to any of those, you have to add LEGOLAND to your must-visit list.

LEGOLAND® Florida is a 150-acre interactive theme park dedicated to families with children between the ages of 2 and 12. Plus, there was a lot of us parents to get involved in. My husband has always loved LEGO, so seeing the amazing buildings and structures was actually really fascinating for him as well.

Explore LEGOLAND Florida

LEGOLAND has more than 50 rides, shows and attractions and the all-new water park, LEGOLAND is geared towards family fun! That being said…you can guess where my son want to go first…a roller-coaster ride!

Things to do at LEGOLAND Florida

After visiting LEGOLAND Miniland USA and trying to figure how we could building Las Vegas and the Daytona 500 when we got home, we headed to the Coastersaurus.  Dad and Sadie stayed back to watch us 🙂  Steven and I had a blast!  The wait times were fabulous as well, we were on in under 20 minutes!  Which is great for a theme-park ride! This FUN wooden coaster curves and dips in and around a prehistoric jungle of animated and life-sized LEGO brick dinosaurs.

Best rides at LEGOLAND Florida

After our coaster ride we headed over to LEGO City. Here we went to Boating School, checked out the Driving School, and even went to Flying School! The best part is that the kiddos do all the driving…us parents just get to sit back and watch all those SMILES 🙂

Best attractions at Legoland

After we learned how to drive boats, cars, and planes we thought we should learn how to build our own. Our next stop was the Imagination Center. The kids got to check out a set and wheels and then they were off to build the ultimate racing machine. Sadie happily accepted some extra help from daddy to make sure hers would be ready to roll.  I absolutely LOVE my son’s face in that picture…he is obviously VERY excited that he beat his sister on that race.  Sadie then headed over to the BIG DROP track to see if hers could survive the fall.  They both had so much FUN building, creating…and learning!  It was actually a fabulous learning experience.  You gotta love it when your child is learning AND having fun.

Best things to do at Legoland

LEGOLAND® Florida makes learning fun by taking imagination outside of the classroom. The park offers STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)-focused programs that meet Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. The programs translate classroom curriculum into real-world examples featuring LEGO products for grades K-6 including the WeDo Robotics LEGO® Education Set and LEGO MINDSTORMS® NXT-bots.

There are hands-on attractions ALL OVER LEGOLAND. You will see them even when you are waiting in line for your favorite ride.

Best eats at Legoland

You will see amazing creations and FUN places to eat all over LEGOLAND too. When we got hungry we enjoyed a fabulous burger from Castle Burger. If you get a chance to grab one, we strongly recommend it. The fries were yum too…and the kids meals come with apples and milk!  Don’t forget to get some of the apple fries while you are there too!

After a visit to LEGOLAND Kingdoms to get one more coaster ride in and the World of Chima it was time for us to make the journey home.

Yes, I put noodles in chili. No, I am not crazy. We love adding noodles to our chili and I hope you will too! Enjoy this easy slow cooker chili today. And tomorrow, because you will definitely have leftovers.

Crock pot Chili With Noodles

Easy Slow Cooker Chili With Noodles

This may very well be the easiest chili recipe out there.  I am sure I could make changes to it, doctor it up some, but this is the way I have been making chili for as long as I can remember, so why would I change it now?  Plus, my whole family loves it.

Yes, I put noodles in my Chili.  I always have and I always will.  In fact, I just figured everyone did, until I served it that way to some friends here in Florida and they thought I was a little strange.  Then one night, I was at a friend’s who is from New Hampshire, and apparently they have always served chili with noodles, but the noodles are served on the side.  Interesting!  Personally, I love adding the noodles into my chili in the last hour or so the chili has been simmering in the crock pot, that way the noodles soak in all that delicious flavor.

Easy Chili With Noodles

Every time I make this easy chili mac recipe, I have plenty of leftovers. That’s just one of the benefits of adding the noodles in, you almost double the size of your meal.  Plus, the leftovers are almost better than the first time you served it, the noodles get the chance to really soak in all the flavors and the spices and seasonings are just…perfect.

Best Chili With Noodles

Now that I think about it, adding noodles to chili was what my grandma always did, and I would bet that is exactly why she did it, growing up during the Depression era, families did what they could to stretch their budgets.  Now adding noodles to our chili is just the way we do, it’s the way we like.  And I hope you will too!

Tips For Visiting SeaWorld Orlando

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

SeaWorld Orlando is a beautiful spot to explore, learn, enjoy rides, shows and great eats. There is something fun for all ages! While I received tickets to visit SeaWorld for free, all opinions are 100% my own!

Tips for visiting SeaWorld Orlando

Tips For Visiting SeaWorld Orlando

We are very lucky that we live in a state where the weather is fabulous almost all year long and that we are so close to some of the most amazing theme parks! This past weekend Steven, Sadie, their buddy Cole, and I jumped in my truck to enjoy a day at SeaWorld in Orlando.

Not familiar with SeaWorld? Well, SeaWorld Orlando is a theme park, and marine-life based zoological park. There are animals to love and watch everywhere, rides to have FUN on, and so many wonderful sites to see!

As soon as we got into the park the boys wanted to pet some Stingrays!

Best attractions at SeaWorld Orlando

Despite their name, stingrays are one of the most docile species to inhabit the oceans. At SeaWorld more than 200 rays—some with wingspans up to 5 feet—spend warm days gliding through their habitat’s peaceful waters. Reach your hand just below the surface, and you’re likely to feel a velvety “high five” as they swim by. Lots of folks were feeding them, so we even got splashed a few times as the stingrays swam by in excitement.

Sadie was still a bit nervous about getting close to the Stingrays, but she voted for hitting Dolphin Cove next.

Best things to do at SeaWorld Orlando

We spent some time at Dolphin Cove just watching the dolphins play.  They would actually swim right up to the side of the wall and we could pet them!  I just LOVE dolphins 🙂  Watching them jump and play that close was so awesome!

Dolphin Cove is one of the largest interactive dolphin pools in the world. Here, you can watch a playful group of bottlenose dolphins both above and below the surface of the water. You can even watch the trainers feed them – so make sure to check out the feeding times.  We also got the chance to head below and watch the dolphins swim and interact below ground.  The kids loved it!  And, to be honest…so did I!

After the dolphins, we wanted to see more fun-loving animals so we headed to see the Sea Lions.  We had the chance to watch them get fed and boy-oh-boy can these guys be loud and silly!

Things to do at SeaWorld Orlando

Another favorite exhibit was the SHARKS!  Everyone thought is was so cool to be able to get so close to animals that most of us are scared of.

You enter into a fascinating journey through one of the world’s largest underwater viewing tunnels in the Shark Encounter Exhibit. Experience a rare, up-close look at prehistoric predators whose ancestors dominated the sea over a hundred million years before dinosaurs walked the earth.

I have told you guys before that my boy, Steven, LOVES rides.  Well, he was with Sadie and his buddy that do NOT love rides.  And he REALLY wanted to ride Journey to Atlantis.  The kids and I walked up to check out the line and I was excited to see that there was a Single Rider line…with NO WAIT 🙂  So, Sadie, Cole, and I stood with Steven until he jumped on the ride and got buckled in and then we RAN to watch Steven plummet down the flume.

Best rides for families at SeaWorld Orlando

That’s my boy in the last row in the bright yellow shirt.  Perfect to wear that day as we could see him as he came down!  Sadie and Cole stood by the edge and got soaked with the SPLASH!  After we were able to meet him as soon as he exited the ride, so it was perfect.  He rode it twice…he would have done it three times if we would have let him 😉

Water ride enthusiasts are definitely in for a thrill as the mythical paradise of Journey to Atlantis reveals its darker side. This exciting flume ride/roller coaster hybrid treats you to more than its share of surprises as you explore dark, watery passageways through the sunken city before being flung from its gates down a thrilling plunge into the waters below.

Best shows at SeaWorld Orlando

We, of course, watched the Shamu Show – ONE OCEAN.  The rides there were better for Sadie and Cole and the HUGE Treehouse kept the kiddos entertained long enough for me to have a snack and relax a bit 🙂

I loved that we could visit over the Holidays – the decorations and events throughout the park were beautiful. It may not snow in Florida, but SeaWorld can still make the holidays feel magical!

Best events at SeaWorld Orlando

SeaWorld does have amazing events all year long, so you don’t have to wait until the holidays to witness something extra special.

Check all the calendar of SeaWorld Events

If you are a Florida Resident – make sure to check out the Fun card – you pay for a day and you can PLAY ALL YEAR!

I hope you and your family have FUN the next time you head to SeaWorld Orlando – we sure did!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure – #UniversalORL

I am going to start this post with a fact. I LOVE HARRY POTTER. I bought every book the day it came out and had it read within days. I watched every movie, and as I did I made comparisons to the book the whole time.

I still remember when the 2nd book came out, my husband went to Target as soon as it opened and bought a copy for my best friend and I.  That was one of the sweetest things ever 🙂  My friend and I spent the next 2 days chatting on the phone at all hours with the updates and excitement.

I love each book and I love each movie, so getting the opportunity to go to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventures in Orlando was like a dream come true for me.

From the moment I walked in, I was in awe. I felt like I was transported to Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. I walked the streets and looked at the store fronts and felt like I was THERE. I was in the books that I read years and years ago. The town was amazing, it was just like I pictured it.

Things to do at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

I even tried on the Sorting Hat!  Steven went directly to the rides of course…he rode Flight of the Hippogriff twice before we tore him away to check out the castle.

There are two other rides that you can experience as well:

  • The Dragon Challenge
  • The Forbidden Journey

We did walk up to the ride, The Forbidden Journey, but figured it would be a bit much for the kids, but a ride attendant said that we could TOUR THE CASTLE.  OH MY!  I was going to get the chance to walk through the Castle!

As soon as we walked in we were greeted by talking portraits.  Just like in the movie!  How FUN is that?!

We saw Dumbledore…

It was dark, so I apologize that my pictures aren’t better, but I think you can still see how amazing it was.

As we left the parks that night, Steven asked me if I still had the Harry Potter Books.  I answered with a simple OF COURSE….then he asked me if he could start reading them.  He said that he loved seeing everything at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and he wanted to be as excited as I was about the books.  My heart melted 🙂  And when we got home the next day, I reached up in the closet where I keep my hardcover Harry Potter books and I grabbed Year 1 for my son.  I know he won’t read it in 2 days like I did, but to experience it all again through him…PRICELESS!

So, thank you Universal Orlando, thank you The Wizarding World of Harry Potter for bringing the magic to life for me and for sparking the magic in Steven.
