Best Butterscotch Holiday Martini

Creamy Butterscotch Martini

The holidays are coming!  The holidays are coming! I absolutely love this time of year, there is always a reason to get together with friends and family to celebrate.  It’s the time of year to be thankful for what we have, for our friends, time with family and look forward to the year ahead.  And there is no better time of year to entertain and enjoy a cocktail or two.

I know the holidays can be stressful, but they don’t have to be.

The holidays are synonymous with indulgence, and this Creamy Butterscotch Martini fits right into the season’s splendor. Butterscotch, with its rich, buttery sweetness, carries a nostalgic warmth that evokes memories of cozy nights by the fire and festive gatherings. The ingredients in this cocktail transform this nostalgic flavor into a drinkable dessert, making it a delightful addition to your holiday celebrations.

Creamy Butterscotch Holiday Martini

Here are a few tips to make holiday entertaining a success:

Plan ahead…in detail

Pick your date, decide what you want to serve, who you want to invite, and make a list of things that need to be done beforehand. Take your list of what needs to be done before the party and write down things that can be done a week ahead, several days ahead, and the day before the party. This keeps tasks more manageable and keeps you from being overwhelmed the day of your event.

Pick a cocktail or two to serve

Pick one or two cocktails (one of them being this Creamy Butterscotch Martini, of course) that you would like to serve at your gathering and make sure that you have a few bottles of red and white wine on hand, and some non-alcoholic choices too. This way you don’t have to have a fully stocked bar or worry about making drinks all night. You may also want to pick at least one cocktail that can be prepared in advance for guests to serve themselves.

Set up and clean before the party

Set up a day or two before the party, this includes re-arranging furniture, adding leaves to the table, and cleaning. If you save all of these tasks for the day of the party you are likely to be stressed and may forget something important. If it’s in the budget you may want to consider having a professional come in and clean a day or two before the party and then you just have to maintain the house for a day or two. This can free up time for you to complete other tasks as well.

Prepare your dishes beforehand

Do as much of the cooking and food prep as you can before the day of the party, and remember you don’t have to prepare everything yourself. There are amazing desserts and appetizers available to purchase at your local grocery store that your guests will enjoy every bit as much as if you slaved in the kitchen over every last crumb.

Use these tips and this delicious Creamy Butterscotch Martini recipe to help make your holiday party as stress-free as possible and enjoy spending your time with your friends and loved ones.

Best Maple Butterscotch Martini

In this butterscotch martini you will have equal parts of milk (that’s what makes it creamy and extra delicious) and vodka.  There is also maple syrup and butterscotch, they give you that hint of sweetness and will have you reminiscing of the holidays after the first sip.  I do strongly recommend using real maple syrup, there is really no substitute for real maple syrup.  I did garnish my martinis with ground cinnamon, you don’t have to, but it adds that extra depth of flavor and it looks pretty 🙂

Pair this martini with other holiday treats like sugar cookies, gingerbread, or even a rich chocolate tart for a sweet harmony of flavors. If you’re hosting a holiday gathering, consider creating a mini dessert cocktail bar where guests can try this martini alongside other festive drinks.

Butterscotch Maple Martini

Here are some reasons why this combination makes an excellent cocktail:

  1. Rich and Creamy Texture:
    • The use of milk in the cocktail adds a rich and creamy texture, providing a smooth and indulgent mouthfeel.
  2. Versatility of Vodka:
    • Vodka is a neutral spirit that allows the other flavors to shine. In this cocktail, vodka serves as a clean and versatile base, letting the sweetness of the butterscotch schnapps and maple syrup take center stage.
  3. Sweet and Buttery Flavor:
    • Butterscotch schnapps contributes a sweet and buttery flavor, creating a dessert-like quality in the cocktail. The butterscotch notes can add depth and complexity to the overall taste.
  4. Natural Sweetness from Maple Syrup:
    • Real maple syrup adds a natural sweetness and a distinctive flavor to the cocktail. It brings a touch of warmth and complexity, complementing the other sweet components.
  5. Warmth and Depth:
    • The combination of butterscotch schnapps and maple syrup, along with the warming effect of alcohol, provides a cozy and inviting sensation. It can be particularly enjoyable during colder seasons.
  6. Cinnamon Garnish:
    • The ground cinnamon garnish enhances the overall aromatic experience of the cocktail. It adds a hint of spice that complements the sweetness and adds a layer of complexity.
  7. Balanced Sweetness:
    • The proportions of milk, vodka, butterscotch schnapps, and maple syrup are such that they create a balanced sweetness. This balance prevents the cocktail from being overly sugary and allows each flavor to contribute to the overall harmony.

Remember that individual preferences vary, so the appeal of this cocktail depends on personal taste. If you enjoy sweet, creamy, and slightly boozy beverages with a hint of warmth, this cocktail is a delightful choice.

The Most Common Wine Faults and How To Detect Them

Does your glass of wine not smell right? Is your glass of wine taste a bit off? Discover The Most Common Wine Faults and How To Detect Them.

How do you know if a bottle of wine is bad

The Most Common Wine Faults and How To Detect Them

Does something smell funny in your glass of wine? It might be tainted by a common wine fault, which is easy to determine with this handy guide.

Wine is a natural substance, and therefore it can become subject to a variety of faults. Though there are quality standards in place to prevent major flaws in the winemaking process, sometimes a faulty bottle can slip through the cracks. Wine can also develop flaws after being bottled. A flawed wine is usually quite noticeable because it will smell and taste very “off”, so if something doesn’t seem right with your glass of wine, it might be one of several common wine faults.

TCA Contamination (Cork Taint)

A wine that is tainted by Trichloroanisole (TCA) is also called “corked” wine. This is one of the most common and most infamous wine faults, as it is caused by tainted corks – which has prompted many producers around the world to begin using other bottle closures, like screwcaps and synthetic corks.

A corked wine will completely lack any fruity aromas of flavors and instead smell musty and unpleasant, similar to a damp basement, soggy cardboard, and even smelly socks.

Oxygen Contamination (Oxidized Wine)

The wine begins to deteriorate as soon as it comes into contact with air – the oxygen reacts with the chemicals in the wine, which destroys the wine’s aromas and flavors. If you’ve an open bottle or glass of wine out for a couple of days, you’ll know that oxidized wine smells and tastes very sour, like vinegar or bad sherry. Both red and white wines also turn brown after being exposed to air.

Wine can become oxidized while still in the bottle, usually due to a damaged cork or cap. If you open a fresh bottle and smell sour and looks brownish, it is probably oxidized.

most common wine faults

Brettanomyces (Brett) Contamination

Brettanomyces (commonly called “Brett” for short) is a type of yeast that can make a wine smell very earthy and stinky, almost animal-like, similar to the smell of barnyards, stables, and sweaty saddles; it can also make a wine smell metallic or cheese-like.

There is some debate over the level of Brett that a wine may have before it is considered faulty – many people argue that certain French wines, especially those from the Rhône Valley, are supposed to have Brett-like characteristics. As well, many New World winemakers often encourage Brett contamination as they think it makes their wines taste more “European.”

Sulfur Contamination

There are two types of sulfur faults in a wine: hydrogen sulfide makes a wine smell like rotten eggs or burnt tires, while sulfur dioxide causes a wine to smell like burnt matches.

Hydrogen sulfide occurs in red wines made in hot climates, where the wines haven’t had enough access to oxygen. Sulfur dioxide is added to many wines as a common preservative in order to help stabilize the wine and preserve its aromas (incorrect amounts).

Heat Damaged Wine (“Cooked” Wine)

Wines can become damaged by high temperatures throughout all stages of the winemaking process, from letting the grapes sit too long in the sun after being picked to fermenting and aging the wine at too-high temperatures to shipping and storing the wine in too-hot conditions.

Heat damaged wine is also referred to as “cooked” wine. These wines will taste dull, with pungent aromas of stewed fruit and prunes; they can also taste vinegary, similar to an oxidized wine. The cork on a bottle of cooked wine will often be pushed up and leaking.  This is actually the reason many wineries don’t ship to Florida in the hot months unless it’s overnighted, 2-day air with cold packs, or with the cold freight shipping option.

how to detect wine faults

Re-fermented Wine

Sometimes wine can undergo a secondary fermentation in the bottle – this is how Champagne and several other sparkling wines are made. However, re-fermentation can also occur by accident in a wine that is supposed to be still when it is exposed to active yeast prior to bottling. The yeast will cause the wine to continue fermenting in the bottle (yeast converts the wine’s sugar into alcohol, and carbon dioxide is created in the process).

Ladybug Contamination

Though it is definitely a very rare and unusual wine fault, ladybug contamination can occasionally occur. Ladybugs are usually a very beneficial vineyard insect, as they eat aphids and other pests. However, sometimes they can infest a vineyard, and if the grapes are harvested by machine, then many of these insects will get crushed up with the grapes. The resulting wine smells uncannily like peanut butter.

Have you experienced any of these common wine faults?  If so, which one(s)?

Whether you are planning a day trip, family vacation or a solo adventure there are lots of affordable events and things to do in Daytona Beach.

Top Things To Do In Daytona Beach

Top Things to Do in Daytona Beach for Under $10

Daytona Beach is a major city in Florida’s Halifax area, which is sometimes referred to as the “Fun Coast.” The NASCAR host city is home to over 600,000 people, beautiful beachfronts, and several college campuses. Since Daytona Beach is only about 50 miles north of Orlando, a family trip to Disney World could start (or end) in this underrated city.  Daytona Beach is about 2.5 hours from Tampa, making it a great place for us to visit for a weekend or a long vacation.  We do go once a year for the Daytona 500, and my parents have been for Daytona Bike Week, but there is so much more to do in Daytona.

Although most people associate Florida with expensive amusement parks and tourist attractions, a trip or a stayaction here in the Sunshine State doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. In addition to all of the free things to do in Daytona Beach, there’s plenty more to do if you have $10 to spare. Whether you want to spend hours outside enjoying the sand and sea or if you want to get away from the Florida heat, you can enjoy yourself here on a budget!

Senior citizens and children under age 10 receive discounted rates – a mini-golf ticket costs $6 for adults and $5 for seniors and children. Your family could spend hours at Go-Kart City trying all of the different activities!

Sometimes, Go-Kart City will offer discounts on multiple activities. Ask about their $20 wristband for 5 activities.

Halifax Historical Museum

Even if you’ve never heard of Halifax until now, you’ll still find this museum interesting. The Halifax Historical Museum examines the history of the Daytona Beach area, with artifacts dating back to 5,000 B.C. The permanent exhibits cover both World Wars, the local Native American tribe, auto racing, and more. You can also catch a movie that will take you show you 13,000 years of Daytona Beach history!

Admission to the Halifax Historical Museum is $7 for adults and $1 for children under 12, but free for kids on Saturdays. On Thursdays, admission is donation based – simply pay what you’d like to.

Marine Science Center

Get to know the local aquatic wildlife at the Marine Science Center. Aquariums and displays feature different underwater habitats, both natural and manmade. Visitors can get up close and personal to a stingray, a creature that’s feared by many due to its painful sting. The stingray at this science center doesn’t have barbs, making it safe to interact with. Before you leave, make sure to stop by the Turtle Terrace to watch animal rehabilitation in action!

Tickets to the Marine Science Center are $5 for anyone 13 or over, $4 for seniors, and $2 for children ages 3-12. Children under 3 years old enter for free.

Lilian Place Museum

This grand beachside house was built by one of Daytona Beach’s first settlers in 1884. Now, the mansion houses period-era furniture and artifacts to bring visitors back to the city’s early years. Visitors can pay $5 per person for a guided tour of the property, but they can also explore for free. There are only two houses like Lilian Place in Volusia County!

Children aged 12 or under can join you on your guided tour of Lilian Place for free.

Joyland Amusement Center

On Daytona Beach’s boardwalk, you’ll find Joyland Amusement Center. It’s a family-owned arcade that operates on quarters. Games cost anywhere from 25 cents to $1, so $10 can stretch quite far here. They have popular games that the whole family can enjoy, like Lane Masters Bowling, WWE Superstars Redemption, and NASCAR racing games. Teach your kids how to play skeeball, but don’t let them beat you!

The same family that operates Joyland Amusement Center also owns other businesses on the boardwalk, like the Mardi Gras Fun Center.

Downtown Daytona Beach Farmer’s Market

Grab some farm-fresh food from the local farmer’s market! On Saturday mornings, head downtown for some tasty organic produce, seafood, and baked goods. After you’ve picked up some food, support other local businesses that are nearby. Homemade, local food beats chain restaurants any day!

Visitors can also search for wild animals, like the white-tailed deer and gopher tortoise. After the $5 parking fee, much of the park is free to access.

Be careful of bobcats and rattlesnakes that call this park their home. You’ll also want to wear long pants and bug spray during the warmer months.

The Role Of Oak In Winemaking

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

Oak has been used in winemaking since people have been making wine! Discover the role of oak in winemaking. Cheers!
The Role Of Oak In Winemaking

The Role Of Oak In Winemaking

Oak has been used in the winemaking for centuries. Aging wine in oak for a short time can give it subtle characteristics where aging it for an extended time will give the wine a strong oak flavor.  It is a personal preference on if you enjoy a strong oak flavor in wine, either way it is interesting to learn why and how oak is used in winemaking. If you get the chance to actually see winemaking or barrel-aging in the process, be sure to!  Many wineries will offer tours of their cellars, typically for a fee, but it is worth it in my opinion.  My husband and I had the opportunity to taste wine directly from a wine barrel at Hall Wines in Napa and it was an incredible experience. We also walked through wine cellars that were centuries old in France, the actual process of winemaking is an art.

Oak trees suitable for barrel making grow about 75 feet tall and are harvested around 30 years of age. One tree will yield approximately two 55-gallon barrels. America and France contain the largest supply of barrel-quality oak forests. France contains around 40% of all the oak forests in the European Union, and around one-third of these forests consist of oak species suitable for cooperage.

Using Oak In Winemaking

How Oak Transforms Wine

At its simplest, wine is fermented fruit juice. It displays the natural flavors of the grapes from which it was made plus an alcoholic component. Many sweet, inexpensive Kosher wines exhibit this quality, some highly reminiscent of alcoholic grape juice. But when fermented or stored in oak barrels, a broad spectrum of new flavors and aromas are imparted to the wine.

These flavors can be fine-tuned by the winemaker and cooper to favor certain characteristics over others, and a modern winery will typically have barrels of different provenances and ages as well as different degrees of “toast.” Over time an oak barrel loses its influence and will become “neutral” within five years. So wineries must buy new barrels each year to obtain the effects that a new oak barrel will impart. A French barrel costs about $1,000. American barrels are much less expensive.

A Choice of Oak

All oak trees are not created equal. French oak is prized for its broad range of subtle flavor-enhancing characteristics. American oak is favored for its bolder effects, providing a stronger vanillin aspect and robust tannins. American oak is often used for bold, robust red wines such as Zinfandel and most Spanish red wines. Complex wines are often fermented and stored in French oak, adding to their cost.

Two factors determine the overall character of a barrel: drying and toasting. Kiln-dried oak barrels display a different flavor profile from air-dried wood. Barrels are set over a fire to toast the inside walls during their construction. The heating of the wood facilitates bending the staves into the desired shape and adds a new layer of flavors and aromas. In addition, the heavier the toast, the softer the tannins will be in the wine. A heavier toast also contributes flavors like spice, smoke, roasted coffee, ginger, nutmeg, leather, and smoked meats.

Light toast helps preserve the natural varietal flavors of the wine but at the expense of increased tannins. Most winemakers prefer a medium toast that offers the best compromise. Wines matured in medium toast barrels may display notes of clove or carnation, coconut, and tea.

To Oak or Not to Oak?

Modern tastes are shifting away from wines with strong oak influence. While un-oaked Chardonnays were rarely seen just a decade ago, they are now commonplace and, in many cases, preferred. Most New World wineries are opting for a lighter hand with oak, particularly in their white wines. Most white varieties are fermented and stored in stainless steel tanks.

The main exceptions are Chardonnay, which is often barrel-fermented and stored in neutral oak, and Alsatian whites, which are typically stored in large neutral casks. There was a movement afoot in the 1990s to barrel-ferment Sauvignon Blanc, particularly in California. While some Sauvignons are still barrel-fermented, particularly those labeled Fumé Blanc, the overwhelming number of Sauvignons worldwide are tank-fermented.

Role of Oak Barrels in Winemaking

Do you wines that have been aged in oak or do you prefer steel barrels? Do you like the oak flavor found in some wines?

At the 17-acre Lee County Manatee Park, you don’t have to pay for zoo admission to see manatees up close! Visit between November and March to see the manatees swim in the shallow water, perfect for viewing the creatures in all their glory. Since manatees prefer colder water, you won’t see them during the warmer months. Make your winter vacation memorable with this exciting attraction!

Don’t cross this activity off of your itinerary if you’re visiting in the summertime! The park also offers a playground, a butterfly pavilion, and fun programming. Who can say “no” to Manatee Bingo?!  Also, be sure to find nearby street parking to avoid paying the $2/hour parking fee.

Matanzas Pass Preserve

This natural habitat has 1.25 miles of trails and 60 acres of plant life. Here, you can hike through the meticulously preserved land, take a paddle boat through the water trail, and rest under a pavilion with a great view. Be on the lookout for cool animals, like turtles and hawks!

Although parking at the preserve is free, it’s quite limited. Therefore, you’ll want to have a back-up parking plan in place. Don’t forget to bring your bug spray, too!  The bugs here in Florida can carry you away!

ArtFest

If you’re visiting Florida in February, check out this three-day art festival in Fort Myers! And if you live in the Sunshine State, you may want to consider making the drive!  With over 200 booths and some 70,000 visitors each year, this event promotes art education at local schools. There are plenty of activities for kids, as well as booths promoting young artists. Adults can shop for artwork, or simply admire what’s on display. This is a cultural event you won’t want to miss!

Lakes Regional Park can keep a family entertained for hours, even without a wallet. One of the best features of this park is how accessible it is to those with physical disabilities. Here, you can find adaptable swings and family-style restrooms!

Parking on site will run you $1/hour, so you’re better off finding parking somewhere nearby and walking to the park. You’ll get some extra exercise in – after all, isn’t that why you came to the park in the first place? 😉

Sunset Celebration Cape Coral

On the first Wednesday of every month, witness the incredible Florida sunset with live music and vendors! Although you’ll want to bring some cash for the food trucks and vendors, it’s free to join the party and window shop. Sunset Celebration takes a break from July-September, so unless you’re visiting Fort Myers at the end of summer, head to Cape Coral for a wholesome beach party!  Cape Coral is less than a 10 minute drive from Fort Myers and worth every minute.

Parking is available at the Veteran’s Museum, and a free shuttle can take you from the museum to the beach from January-April. Take advantage of this service if you’re visiting during those months!

Southwest Florida Military Museum & Library

Speaking of the Veteran’s Museum. The Southwest Florida Military Museum & Library is located at 4820 Leonard St, Cape Coral, FL 33904 and is also open to the public and is free. The free museum in Fort Myers is a piece of the United States military history from the 18th through the 21st century. Come to learn about our cultural heritage. While the museum is free, please consider making a donation to support our United States Veterans.

Sanibel Lighthouse & Fishing Pier

This historic landmark teaches visitors about the Sanibel Lighthouse, even though you can’t actually go inside. The surrounding beach is great for collecting shells, so bring a bucket when you visit. The Sanibel Lighthouse and fishing pier offer beautiful scenery and an educational opportunity. Whether you’re more amazed by the views or the fact that a giant lighthouse built in 1884 is still fully functional, this is a great place to explore nautical life!

The fishing pier is open to the public as well as the beach. If you get tired of fishing, take a stroll on the boardwalk through the wetlands!  This is free activity in Ft. Myers the whole family will enjoy.

Edison Festival of Light

Thomas Edison was a winter resident of Fort Myers, so a three-week-long celebration in his honor takes place every February. At the Edison Festival of Light, you’ll find car shows, parades, and block parties galore. The Grand Parade is so popular that Fort Myers residents “reserve” spectator spots on the street weeks in advance!

Since the festival is dedicated to Thomas Edison, there are plenty of STEM-related events to attend. However, there’s so much more than that. Dog parades, relay races, and craft beer vendors will draw people with different interests to the event, too!

Green Market Yoga

Spend your Saturday morning channeling your inner yogi at the Green Market! This healthy food market hosts yoga on the lawn every weekend at 9:30am. Bring water, sunscreen, and your own equipment. If you’re looking for a spot in the shade, be sure to show up early!

Once the yoga session is done, you can explore the market while you’re already there. Watch free cooking demos and enjoy the live music.

Great Calusa Blueway

Tired of hiking?  Try kayaking! The Great Calusa Blueway has almost 200 miles of kayaking trails that wrap around nearby islands. If you have your own kayak or canoe, this is a free attraction – otherwise, you can rent one. Kayaking in this natural wonder is an opportunity you won’t want to miss out on!

Shell Factory

Don’t let the name deceive you – this isn’t a factory! The Shell Factory is an entertainment district with museums, restaurants, and more. It’s free to window shop and explore, though you’ll have to pay to get into the nature park, mini golf course, and other activities. Take some Instagram-worthy photos at this beach-inspired fun zone!

Finding free things to do in Fort Myers is not only smart but it’s easy. Make the most out of your vacation by visiting during the winter months, when the festivals listed here are running and the weather is cooler.  It can be HOT here in Florida.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Movie Review

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

Will you love Maleficient: Mistress of Evil as much as the first? Check out this No Spoilers Review of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. While my family and I were able to attend the press release of this Walt Disney Pictures production, all opinions are my own.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Movie Review

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Movie Review

Calling all Maleficent fans! This sequel is in theaters now and if you are an Angelina Jolie fan, like me, you have probably already seen the movie. Disney does an incredible job getting us excited for movie releases. I mean, what isn’t to love about a tale beyond Sleeping Beauty with an all-star cast? Elle Fanning is back as Auroua and Sam Riley is back as the level-headed raven, Diaval. Michelle Pfeiffer enters the story as Queen Ingrith.

I love the tale of Sleeping Beauty, I grew up on it and read it to my daughter when she was young countless times. I also enjoy the twist on the fairy tales that Disney took, sharing the other side of everything. The evil point of view. I have found a sense of empathy for the villain. I want to know more. Learn more. Yes, there is two sides to every story. And thank you Disney for showing them both to me. But, did we learn all of Maleficent’s tale in the first movie release 5 years ago? In a way, yes.

In Maleficent: Mistress of Evil we are reminded of the bond between Maleficient and Auroua, we are shown again a test to their love. And this time we are witness to a huge battle. I mean a huge battle! It was actually way more than I anticipated, there is a lot of destruction, fighting and evil plans for death. I was left thinking YIKES and, once again rooting for our favorite Mistress of Evil.

You did get a few new pieces of Maleficent’s life, a look to who she is and a possible “new family.” You did get the sense of Good vs. Evil like Disney can do, but I don’t feel as though it was a sequel per se. It does pick up where the first one did 5 years ago, but it doesn’t totally tie things together. In the first Maleficent, I really rooted for the villain, I realized that things aren’t what they seem, I felt that you really can’t judge a book by it’s cover. I felt everything that Disney wanted me to. In Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, I walked in already believing in Maleficent, and that she wasn’t a Mistress of Evil, and I never really felt like she was Evil.

Did I enjoy the movie? Yes, absolutely. Did the kids? Yes, absolutely. Did my husband? Yes, it had enough fight scenes in it to keep him entertained, he was slightly concerned in the beginning when there was a lot from the Moor world, he was thinking it was going to be a bit too “cartoon-like”, but it wasn’t. Disney always does an impeccable job on bringing the movie to life, the visuals were really outstanding. Did I like it as much as the first Maleficent? No, not really, but let’s face it, that one was hard to top.

Have you seen Maleficent: Mistress of Evil? Do you plan on it? What are your thoughts?

What Are The Different Types of Cardio Exercise?

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

Cardio can be an important part of any fitness routine, it is great for elevating your heart rate and helping you to lose calories. Discover the different types of cardio.

Different Types of Cardio

What Are The Different Types of Cardio Exercise?

Cardio exercise places focus on an increased heart rate through moderate to intense activity.  Cardio exercise is quite often the most popular exercise option for men and women seeking to build muscle while losing fat. Cardio is usually done about 3-5 times per week for 30-60 minutes per session. Cardio helps get your heart rate elevated so that your body starts to burn calories and fat while you’re continuously moving.

Cardio should be included in your workout routine when you’re looking to build lean muscle and want to lose more fat. These cardio exercises are also perfect for the beginner and advanced fitness nut. This is why I always recommend cardio to newbies, it’s the perfect way to get yourself used to a daily workout without pushing yourself too hard too soon.

What Are The Different Types of Cardio Exercise?

There are many cardio exercises available for you to add to your daily workout routine. One suggestion I have is to figure out what your goals are for including cardio in your life. Are you looking to lose weight, build muscle tone or just lead a healthier lifestyle? Once you’ve determined your end goal for this new exercise routine, it’s time to learn more about cardio exercises.

There are three different levels of impact on cardio workouts. This includes high-impact, low-impact, and non-impact. A high-impact cardio workout will have both feet off of the ground at some point for a weight-bearing workout. The low-impact cardio workout will have one foot on the ground at all times providing you with a less intense cardio workout such as walking. Lastly, the non-impact cardio workout tends to be some of my favorites such as swimming or spinning.  Don’t let the words, low impact or low impact foul you, they are still a heavy cardio workout!

Low-Impact Cardio Exercises

Can you lose weight doing low impact cardio? Yes, you can lose weight doing low impact cardio. Think of it this way, low impact just means no jumping…it does not mean low intensity.

Planks, Low Impact Jazzercise Classes, and elliptical workouts are the more popular low-impact cardio exercises to enjoy.

Types of Cardio

High-impact Cardio Exercises

The key to making sure high-impact exercise is more helpful than harmful is to have a good base of strength and joint control before attempting a high-impact cardio workout.

Some high-impact cardio exercises include running, jumping rope, High Impact Jazzercise and Aerobic Classes, burpees, side to side jumping lunges, and squat jumps.

Non-Impact Cardio Exercises

Non-impact cardio exercises are very similar to low-impact cardio workouts such as swimming, rowing, and spinning but they are mostly exercises that have both feet on the ground. Non-impact cardio workouts can provide you with some major calorie burn!

Now that you’ve learned more about the different types of cardio exercises, you should be ready to add a little cardio into your life. Remember that you should always work within your target heart range. Your target heart range refers to how many beats per minute you should push your heart to during a workout. Knowing where your heart rate is during a cardio workout is best monitored using a wrist-strap or a chest-strap monitor. Each of these products is available online and have a pricing structure to match a low-end to high-end budget.

If you’re wondering how to tell what your target heart range is, you can use this formula:

Subtract your age from 220. The answer will be your target heart range for your cardio workouts.

As with any diet and exercise plan, it’s best to consult your doctor to confirm that your heart is healthy enough to handle the different types of cardio exercise options shared today.

What is your favorite form of cardio?

Different Types of Cardio Exercise

I enjoy running, walking and going to Jazzercise. But I am also looking into the different types of yoga, I need a little more stretching and attention to my mind and body.

How To Choose The Perfect White Wine

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our disclosure policy.

It may seem overwhelming when it comes to picking the perfect white wine, there are so many options! Here’s how to choose a white wine. Cheers!

Choosing the best White Wine

How To Choose The Perfect White Wine

Choosing the perfect white wine is fairly simple if you are merely choosing a wine that suits your taste. How to go about choosing the one that is perfect for you depends on your level of wine knowledge and what your needs are in a glass of white wine. Of course, if the bottle you seek is to be the one that is perfect for a specific activity or special event, your search will require considerably more effort supported by a little research.

If, for instance, you are a social drinker, you will more than likely want to choose a palate friendly white wine that is pleasant on its own without the need for cheese, fruit, or other food accompaniment for its enjoyment. On the other hand, if you are a person who mostly drinks wine with dinner, you will want a versatile white wine that can accompany many different types of foods.

There is an unbelievable amount of white wine grape varietals in existence. Most people, even if they don’t drink, are aware of the basic white wines that are generally found on restaurant menus such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris/Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Vinho Verde, while avid wine enthusiasts are familiar with the less widely known whites such as Viognier and Verdelho.

Tasting Notes Of Popular White Wines

Chardonnay is the most popular white variety and is commonly aged in oak. Chardonnay wines can be crisp or buttery and dry or somewhat sweet. When selecting the perfect Chardonnay, look at the description of the wine and select the one that has the desired characteristics. As an example, a dry and creamy Chardonnay will be smooth but not sweet.

Chenin Blanc wines are typically highly acidic and, depending on where the grapes are grown, they can be anywhere from bland to full-bodied and fruity.

Gweurztraminer wines tend to be on the sweet side and have aromas of florals and spice.

Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio wines can come in a variety of styles ranging anywhere from dry to sweet and spicy, sometimes with a hint of honey.

Riesling wines tend to be low in alcohol content with noticeable acidity. Most are sweet, but they can also be dry.

Sauvignon Blanc wines are almost always crisp and tangy and are usually consumed young.

Viognier wines are commonly known for their floral aromas and are predominantly dry white wines.

How To Choose the best White Wine

Common White Wine Terminology

Here are a few that are commonly used with reference to white wine.

Crisp – This means the wine has a pronounced but pleasing tartness or acidity. It refers to a fresh, young wine with good acidity.

Creamy or Buttery – This is the opposite of crisp and refers to the wine having a rich, smooth texture.

Dry – This is the term used to refer to wine with little or no sweetness.

Fruity – This refers to the body and richness of a wine made from good, ripe grapes. It means the wine has fruit flavors, which are usually included in the description.

Oaky – This refers to wine aged in oak that has taken on a bit of the barrel’s taste and smell. Oaky wines often have a hint of vanilla.

Peppery – This term is used to refer to spicy wines such as Gewurztraminer.

Round – This term describes wines that have smooth flavors and textures and are well balanced.

White wines can be offered in sweet or dry styles, oaked or unoaked, and either sparkling or still. The first step in choosing the perfect white wine is to learn just what wines there are in existence for you to choose from. The internet offers a vast number of resources for reading about white wine varietals. Once you have spent some time learning about the different kinds of white wines and their flavor profiles, it is time to start tasting.

Wine tasting is the best way to develop one’s palate and learn about individual wines. There are many venues from wine specialty stores and supermarkets to restaurants and wine bars where you can taste wine on a regular basis either for free or at a very small cost. Anyone fortunate enough to live near the wine country, such as Napa Valley, Sonoma or even Northern Michigan, can also visit the tasting rooms at their local wineries.

Some wine venues offer flights of (usually) three wines that are in some way similar to each other that you can sample side by side. Sampling wines in a lateral tasting such as the same grape varietal produced in three (or more) different regions is a good way to compare wines as the same grape grown in different locales at different altitudes in different soils produces different wines.

How To Choose a White Wine

Choosing the perfect white wine will come down to your own personal taste preferences. The information from the label on a particular bottle of wine can sometimes be misleading, particularly when describing the wine as sweet or dry as these are relative terms that mean something different to different people. That information can also be of little help if one of the flavor notes is a fruit you have never tasted or even heard of.

No matter how highly recommended a wine is or how many points a bottle has been awarded, the best way to choose the perfect white wine for you is simply to let your taste buds decide. Just because Robert Parker or the staff at Wine Enthusiast found something to be liquid ecstasy in a glass, it doesn’t mean you will automatically agree.

Read about varietals, make a list of the ones that look interesting to you, and then set out to try as many different versions of each as you can. Trying wine with and without food will yield different results, so it is a good idea to try with a least a bit of cheese whenever you can.
