What Apples Work Best in Sangria?
The best apples for apple sangria are ones that are firm, crisp, and keep their shape, even after soaking in wine or juice and that have a flavor profile (sweet, tart, or balanced) that enhances the drink. You can use any variety you love, but choosing apples that stay crisp makes a huge difference. I used JAZZ apples, they’re naturally sweet, perfectly crunchy, and don’t get mushy in the pitcher. Plus, that gorgeous red color makes every glass look stunning.
Here are some other top apple varieties I recommend for sangria and why they work so well:
Honeycrisp
- Honeycrisp has a crunchy texture and is known for it’s juiciness, and sweet-tart flavor.
- It stays crisp and holds up well when soaking in liquid.
- Its sweetness pairs nicely with white wine or rosé sangrias, balancing the acidity and adding a light, fresh apple flavor.
Pink Lady
- Crisp texture plus a sweet-tart flavor makes these an excellent option for sangria,
- They hold their shape well, so you don’t have to worry about them becoming mushy in the pitcher.
- Its rosy skin adds a lovely visual, which is half the magic of a good sangria in a glass.
Granny Smith
- For a sangria with a more tart, crisp edge, the Granny Smith apple adds acidity and balance.
- The Granny Smith will also hold it’s shape and not get mushy in your apple sangria. It also adds a different color if you want that pop of green.
You can even mix a couple kinds for extra flavor and color!
