Cheesy, creamy, and game-day ready! This Coney Dog Dip brings all the flavors of a classic coney dog into one irresistible skillet appetizer. While this post is sponsored by Florida Dairy Farmers, all opinions, my love of easy and delicious tailgate recipes are my own.
I recently made this Coney Dog Dip for UCF Parents Weekend (both of my kids are Knights!), and it was a HUGE hit! We even reheated it on the small grill we had with us, and it was just as delicious the second time around. This dip is everything you love about a classic coney dog but in a warm, cheesy, dippable skillet. With crescent roll–wrapped hot dogs circling that creamy chili cheese dip center, it’s the kind of game-day appetizer that disappears fast! Well, at least it did for us!
Tailgating Tips for Coney Dog Dip
One of the best parts about this dip is how well it travels and reheats, making it perfect for tailgates, watch parties, or parents’ weekends (like ours at UCF!). Here’s a few tips:
- Make at home, warm back up on the grill: I made the dip at home, transferred it into a disposable aluminum pan (grill-friendly and no cleanup!), and then just warmed it up right on the grill. You could also make it directly in the pan from the start if you want an even easier option.
- Reheat on the grill: If you’ve got a small grill handy, this dip warms up beautifully in a cast iron skillet or a disposable pan. Just cover it with foil to help the cheese melt evenly.
- Serve it up: Pair with extra tortilla chips, veggies, or even more hot dogs on the side for scooping.

Why This Recipe Works for Game Day
This dip has everything you want for a football or tailgating spread: it’s portable, shareable, and guaranteed to be the first dish to disappear. The combo of cheesy dip and mini pigs in a blanket makes it a one-stop snack that everyone can dig into—no utensils required!
Now, of course, you don’t have to bring it to your tailgate, it’ll be just as yummy at a homegate!
Why We Love This Coney Dog Dip
This Coney Dog Dip takes everything you love about a classic coney dog and transforms it into a cheesy, shareable appetizer. It’s warm, hearty, and perfect for feeding a crowd. For me, it also brings back a little nostalgia when I was a kid back in Michigan, and my parents would take us to the local diner and ordering a coney dog was the best! They were oh-so-delicious, extra messy, and always worth it! This dip captures that same flavor and fun, but in a way that’s easy to make and even easier to serve at tailgates, parties, or game day.
I added whole milk to my chili cheese dog dip. Whole milk adds the creaminess that ties everything together, helping the cheeses melt into a silky, scoopable dip. It also provides a little protein and calcium boost, making this indulgent dish just a bit more wholesome. It’s proof that milk is more than just a beverage, it’s a key ingredient in creating rich, satisfying dishes.
What Exactly Is a Coney Dog?
If you’ve never had a coney dog, think of it as the chili cheese dog’s famous cousin. The coney dog originated in the early 1900s, believed to have been inspired by immigrants who passed through Ellis Island and then spread across the Midwest. It was a staple for me growing up in Michigan! A traditional coney dog is a hot dog topped with beanless chili, diced onions, and mustard…simple, savory, and loaded with flavor. This dip takes all those classic toppings and transforms them into a crowd-pleasing appetizer that’s perfect for tailgates, football watch parties, or anytime you need to feed a hungry crowd. I would totally make it on a random Tuesday for dinner!!
Got leftovers?
Not sure how that’s possible! This dip is delish! But if you do…This chili cheese dip is just as good spooned over nachos or baked potatoes the next day.
Whether you’re heading out to a tailgate, hosting a game-day get-together, or just looking for a fun family dinner, this Coney Dog Dip is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. It’s cheesy, hearty, and just the right amount of over-the-topeverything a football snack should be. Plus, with the crescent roll–wrapped hot dogs baked right into the skillet, you’ve got built-in dippers that make it even more fun to eat. Trust me, once you try it, this dip will make a regular appearance on your fall and football season menu!

Coney Dog Dip aka Chili Cheese Dog Dip
Ingredients
- 6 hot dogs I used the all beef variety
- 8 oz 1 package of crescent rolls – I used the reduced fat variety
- 15 oz can of no-bean chili
- 1/2 cup whole milk I used Florida Milk
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 4 oz cream cheese
- 3/4 cup sweet onions diced
- 1 tbsp mustard
- Sliced jalapenos and green onions if desired for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Cut crescent roll dough into strips – I found this easiest to do leaving the dough in a roll and cutting it that way.
- Wrap the hot dog pieces in the crescent roll dough strips.
- Place the wrapped hot dogs around the edge of the skillet, and bake for 18 minutes.
- In a medium bowl, mix chili, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, milk, onions, and mustard in a bowl until combined.
- Remove the skillet from the oven and add the coney cheese dip into the center.
- Place back into the oven and bake 8-10 more minutes until the crescent rolls are a golden brown and the chili cheese dip is bubbly.
- Garnish with sliced green onions and sliced jalapenos if desired.
- Enjoy!
