How to make a French 75 Cocktail

You all know my love of a new cocktail, especially a wine cocktail. Well, this cocktail recipe isn’t my creation, but once I made it, I knew I had to share it with you! Have you hear of a French 75?

The French 75 is a bold and flavorful cocktail that’s surprisingly simple to make at home. Made with gin, lemon juice, champagne, and simple syrup it is similar to a Tom Collins but with champagne instead of club soda and smaller proportions of gin and lemon juice.

If you have never made simple syrup before, don’t worry it really is quite simple to make and keep at home. All you need is water and sugar! You can store it in the refrigerator for several weeks.  You can even infuse your simple syrup with flavors for an even tastier drink if you would like.

This bubbly cocktail was originally created in 1915 and is named after the French 75 mm field gun commonly used in World War I. It was named after the weapon because of the strong kick the drink has just like the rifle. Be sure to keep that in mind when you are enjoying these 😉 This cocktail was first found at the New York Bar (later called Harry’s New York Bar) in Paris at the hands of barman Harry MacElhone.

The French 75 cocktail is served in a chilled champagne flute and made right in the glass.

To make yours, pour in the gin, squeeze in lemon juice, and one ounce of simple syrup into your glass. Top the flute off with bubbly champagne, and a twist of lemon rind for garnish and enjoy.

This cocktail is perfect for sipping at home after a long day or serving guests at your next party, and it definitely won’t be out of place at brunch. Lightly sweet with a citrusy flavor and plenty of bubbles from the champagne, there is no bad time to enjoy a French 75.

Ways to Customize your French 75 Cocktail

If you’re looking to put a twist on your French 75, there are plenty of ways to customize this classic cocktail while keeping its elegant and refreshing charm. Try swapping gin for cognac to create a richer, slightly sweeter version that adds depth and warmth—this variation, sometimes called the “French 125,” offers a smoother sip with a touch of sophistication. You can also experiment with flavored simple syrups, such as lavender or honey, to bring in unique floral or natural sweetness that complements the citrusy brightness of the lemon.

French 75 Pairing Suggestions

Pairing your French 75 with food can also up your cocktail night. The light and bubbly nature of this drink makes it an excellent companion for seafood appetizers like oysters or smoked salmon crostini. It also pairs beautifully with soft cheeses, fresh fruit, and even delicate pastries, making it a great addition to a brunch spread or an elegant evening gathering.
