The Black Velvet cocktail blends Guinness and champagne for a bold yet bubbly drink. A simple, elegant recipe perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or brunch or any day!

Black Velvet Cocktail

The Black Velvet cocktail is one of those drinks that might make you raise an eyebrow at first, but trust me, it works! This surprisingly yummy cocktail is made with just two ingredients: rich, dark stout beer (like Guinness) and crisp, bubbly sparkling wine or champagne. While the combination may sound a little weird, it creates a perfectly balanced drink that’s both bold and elegant. The roasted malt flavors of the stout mingle with the bubbles of the champagne, delivering a sip that’s smooth, sophisticated, and unexpected.

The History of the Black Velvet Cocktail

So, where did this Guinness and champagne cocktail come from? The story goes back to 1861 in England. After the death of Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, a steward created the drink as a tribute. He thought champagne on its own felt too celebratory for such a somber occasion, so he paired it with stout to tone it down. The result was the Black Velvet cocktail, a drink that quickly grew in popularity and has stood the test of time. Ask for one the next time you belly up to the bar!

What Does a Black Velvet Taste Like?

The best way to describe a Black Velvet is balanced. Guinness provides a rich, velvety backbone with notes of roasted malt and a hint of bitterness. Sparkling wine lightens it up with crisp bubbles and a touch of sweetness. Together, the contrast creates a refreshing yet indulgent drink that feels both approachable and refined. If you like cocktails that surprise your palate and look impressive in the glass, this one checks all the boxes.

When to Enjoy a Black Velvet Cocktail

The Black Velvet is as versatile as it is unique. It’s a natural fit for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, but it’s also a fun choice for brunches, holiday gatherings, or anytime you want to wow your guests with something a little different. It’s simple to make but feels elevated, making it one of those drinks you’ll keep in your back pocket for special occasions (and casual ones, too!).

How to Make a Black Velvet Cocktail

To make a Black Velvet cocktail, you’ll need a champagne flute, cold Guinness, and chilled champagne.

Start by pouring the Guinness into the glass first, filling it about halfway.

Then, gently top it with champagne. To try for a layered effect, try pouring the champagne over the back of a spoon to help it float on top of the stout. This technique creates a beautiful visual contrast while maintaining the cocktail’s signature smooth taste. As you can see, that is not a technique I have mastered….but let me know if you manage it!
