What Happens To Your Florida Prepaid Plan If Your Child Doesn’t Go To College?
Both of my children have the amazing opportunity to go to college thanks to Florida Prepaid College Plans. We have successfully paid off both of their plans. What a proud moment as a parent. Knowing that my kids can go to any college that they would like is a huge relief. A financial burden has been lifted.
My kids are doing great in school, in fact, they are both honor roll right now. My husband and I talk about the importance of schooling, sports, scholarships, and college all the time. We also let them know that they can follow their dreams, that they can do anything that set their minds to. The sky is the limit!
But what if their dream doesn’t include college? What if one of them doesn’t go to college? What if one of them decides that a vocational school is what is right for them? What happens to our Florida Prepaid College Plans if they decide not to go to college?
My son is the brilliant creative type. I may be a bit biased, as he is my son, but what he can build with his hands from just an idea out of his head is absolutely amazing to me. He has built a remote control airboat from foam that we bought at the craft store, wires, copper, and a computer fan. He loves cars, their engines, seeing how they work and thinking about he can make them better.
So, what if he doesn’t want to become the engineer or automotive designer that me and his dad tell him he can be? What if he wants to be a mechanic? What if he starts as a mechanic then wants to open his own shop one day? What if he decides that college isn’t for him? What happens to his Florida Prepaid College Plan if he decides not to attend college?
Well, it would be okay. We want our son to be happy and successful at whatever he decides to do.
But, what happens if your child decides not to attend college and you already have that Florida Prepaid College Plan? Do you lose that investment?
While Florida Prepaid Plans are designed to used at a Florida College or State University, the amount covered by the plan can also be applied at other schools nationwide. And if Steven (or Sadie) decide to not go to college, we can change the beneficiary of the Prepaid Plan or get our money back. That means if our child decides not to attend college, our Florida Prepaid College Plan investment is not wasted!
We love that we have part of our children’s future planned for, but every parent out their knows that sometimes parents and kids don’t always have the same plans. So, we are thankful that Florida Prepaid College Plans has our investment and our child’s future in mind. Even if that means one of them decides not to go to college.

This is great information for Florida Residents. This plan sounds awesome!
We lived in Florida for over 10 years and our daughter was born there. I don’t recall hearing about this plan but she was still very young when we moved so of course hadn’t thought/heard about it. What a great thing Florida has!
