Holiday Gift Guide for Tween Boys

Holiday Gift Guide For Tween Boys

My son is 10, well, he will be 11 in January and I have found that he is very hard to buy for this year! In fact, tweens in general can be tricky. They aren’t little kids anymore, but they aren’t big kids either. I have had several friends ask me for ideas for their own kids this age, so I thought I would share some of the top items on my son’s list this year to help you all out too 🙂

While we did receive some of the products listed below for review, all opinions and my son’s tween interests are 100% our own.

K’NEX Dual Cross Building Set

Most boys love to build and create. In fact, my husband went to the Great American Teach In at the kids’ school and he brought K’NEX with him to help him get the kids to relate to Real Estate Development…big kids like to build and create too! K’NEX has building sets to fit any of your child’s interests, but we particularly like the Dual Cross Building Set because it makes a Cross Blaster! In fact, you can build SIX different blasters in this one building set. So, he can build it and it shoots…up to 75 feet! Score!

Where to buy:  Amazon, KNEX.com and keep a look out at your favorite retailers

Rockboard Descender

This may very well be the coolest skateboard you will ever see. Don’t be fooled, it is not just any skateboard, it can do everything that a regular ole skateboard can’t do! You can ride it on grass, bumpy terrain, down hills, it’s AWESOME! Check it out in action on YouTube. And don’t forget about the Rockboard Scooter!

Where to buy:  Rockboard.com and Amazon

Guitar

Next year he will be in Middle School and he will able to take “band class.” He has heard several friends talk about music and my husband has recently started taking guitar lessons, so a guitar is actually really high on his list this year. The trick is to find one that fits. He has tried to play my husband’s and his fingers just can’t reach all the way around to the strings right. This one from OneStepAhead includes the guitar strap, guitar bag, pick, and instructions. Musical instruments are more than fun: kids who play musical instruments see benefits in coordination and concentration, and even get higher grades.

INVICTA Challenge

INVICTA is an acronym for seven key leadership traits: Integrity, Nobility, Valor, Initiative, Curiosity, Tenacity and Accountability.  I am thinking that you may have not heard of the INVICTA Challenge yet. Well, let me tell you a little bit about it. It is a “game” that is designed to give your child an action-filled learning adventure. There are stories that are will encourage the Hero to come out in your child. I love this one because it’s different from anything else I have seen on the market, and my husband loves “playing” it too! They are both learning quite a bit 😉

You can try it digitally yourself here, and in a few weeks the FREE app should be available. The app does have an in-app purchase for $4.99, and in honor of the first hero portrayed by Invicta Challenge in Flash & Thunder, the company helped create a Turner Turnbull Scholarship with the Chahta Foundation, a nonprofit that works alongside the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. The company will donate a portion of its in-app sales to this scholarship supporting a Choctaw Nation student in his or her 2nd year of college. The company will kick off the scholarship drive with a donation of $1,000 at a Dec. 3 event in Durant, OK with the Choctaw Nation.

INVICTA Challenge combines an action-packed video game, graphic novel, maps and operation packet that inspire kids to read and then lead. Children ages 8 to 14 immerse themselves in historical situations where they make decisions that determine success or failure.

Where to buy: at Barnes & Noble in store or online.  It is also available on Amazon.

Remote Control Car

My son is obsessed with remote control cars. And I am not exaggerating. But not just any remote control car, the ones that go 45-60 MPH and are in need of fancy-shamsy parts that we get at hobby stores. If you have a boy at home with the need for speed as well, I recommend check out the options on Amazon or your favorite retailer first, then check out the Hobby Stores. The RC cars from Hobby Stores cost more and require more work, but they are indeed cooler 😉

Kindle

Ok, I’m gonna be honest with you guys. My son did not ask for a Kindle. This is more of a parental hope that if he gets one he will be more interested in reading 🙂 Reading is just not his favorite past time, so since the Kindle Fire was on sale for $35, I scooped it up and am hoping for a reading miracle.

Where to buy:  Amazon

Video Games

FORZA 6 and FIFA 2016 are #1 on my son’s video game wish list this year. Watch for them on sale, I managed to grab them both on deep discounts. So, keep a look out! FORZA is a racing game and FIFA is soccer.

Where to buy:  FORZA 6 on Amazon, FIFA 16 on Amazon, and keep a look out at your favorite retailers

Misfit Activity Tracker

He has been asking for a fitbit, but since he is 10 and I am not quite certain of his dedication to a fitness tracker, the Misfit Flash seemed perfect. It’s on sale right now for under $20, but if you watch it, it may go back down to $14.99, that’s what it was on Black Friday at Best Buy and Amazon.

I liked this one because it has a fun Sporty design; comes in a variety of colors; ultra comfortable and water resistant to 30 meters.  It does measure daily activity and sleep, and syncs with your smartphone to show steps, distance traveled, and calories burned.  It tracks walking, running, cycling, soccer, tennis, basketball and more.
Powered by a replaceable battery, lasting up to 6 months. No charging, ever. Misfit recommends Panasonic CR3032 batteries.

  2. I have an 11 year old who was asking for a Fitbit also. I think the Misfit tracker is the answer. Thank you for the ideas!

  4. Thank you for the post, I have been sitting at my desk trying to figure out what to get my kids for Christmas and you gave me some great ideas.

  5. I don’t have any let alone tween boys, but I think I can agree with the guitar above. My husband took guitar lessons this year and he loved it. So no matter what age you are, a good guitar is a great idea.

  6. The Rockboard Descender looks really cool and looks like it might be a little easier to ride. I also like it because it keeps the kids active. For indoor play I like K’nex. It teaches them to follow directions and also sparks their imaginations.
