Since Halloween is just around the corner, I figured we would all we taking in the last few days of October and visiting all the fall fun places.  One of my favorite places to visit when I am up north is the Apple Orchard! There are also some GREAT finger-foods and snack deals at Publix this week, I am going to give you some ideas for an afternoon out snack-bag shopping list, a few recipes, and a craft!

A trip to a local apple orchard is another FREE fun outdoor activity and offers families a chance to participate in the fall harvest. Some farms also offer horse-drawn wagon rides, making the excursion a real adventure for kids. Pack some goodies and you can make a day of it.

An abundance of apples at the orchard means there will be plenty to spare for craft projects! Cut the apples in half to create an apple-stamp bag, dry a few for funny-faced apple dolls and sour puss puppets or carve a set of candleholders. Just be sure to save enough to make an easy and delicious apple pie and some homemade applesauce. Wrap any unused fruit in newspaper and store in a cool, dry place.
I am having a ball finding these crafts – I really liked the Apple Bag – because again – it would make an absolutely adorable gift for family members and even teacher gifts!

Even the youngest picker can make this apple-y sack to use on the next excursion to the local orchard.

Materials: (You can find all of these at Michael’s!)

Fabric bag (cloth grocery sacks work well)
Newspaper
Fabric paint (green, red and brown)
Paintbrush

Apple

Instructions:

Fold over some newspaper and insert it into the fabric bag, laying it flat so that the paint will not seep through. With a brush, use brown paint to fashion a tree trunk and let dry.

Then use a horizontally cut apple to make leaves by brushing a thin layer of green fabric paint onto the apple and pressing it around the top of the trunk. Repeat several times (make sure to look for the star in the print).

After the green paint dries, cut an apple in half vertically. Pick the side that still has the stem and brush with red fabric paint. Then “hang” juicy apples on the tree.

Even with your grocery trip for snacks, your crafts tools and a FREE trip to the apple orchard – you should come in well under budget – making this a wonderful FALL FRUGAL FAMILY FUN DAY!

Have Fun!
